You couldn't make it up.

Never was a clichè more appropriate........

I am completely open to views on either side of the political divide, but I expect peopel to argue their opinions on known and supportable data.

I do have little time, I admit, for conspiracy theories and flights of fancy unsupported by evidence.

I agree Monica. I wish more people did use data to support their arguments, it would certainly raise the quality of the debate.

TopGunner What a load of nonsense you write

I agree MOnica!

I thought these forums were here to give your point of view and that is my point of view so if you do not agree with it there is no reason to get nasty about it. It seems free speech has really gone down the drain. I didn't expect this on Gransnet.

Oh it's quite normal for some on Gn, I'm sad to say.
For goodness sake dont show your centre right proclivities by talking about free speech. 🤣🤣🤣

There are plenty of views and opinions presented as facts

ronib Mon 25-Nov-24 10:46:56

MaizieD what a surprising comment!!

MaizieD Mon 25-Nov-24 10:26:19

just because an opinion is popular does not make it fact or true

Do you really believe that there are facts that aren't true?

David49 Mon 25-Nov-24 09:34:23

The problem is that if a lie or distortion is repeated often enough it becomes accepted.

For instance the anti Trump campaign was so intense that most including myself and most of the media, predicted a close win for Harris, yet Trump controls both houses in the US. Even Obama didn’t manage that, just because an opinion is popular does not make it fact or true

Well, I have always shown myself very willing to keep playing the game in a conversation with someone I disagree with.

Oh, MOnica. You won't play with me any more 😭

Not that I am aware of.

MaizieD Sun 24-Nov-24 23:35:02

Well, there is that to consider..

Or you just like having a laugh..

ronib Sun 24-Nov-24 22:57:51

MaizieD how do you know that? I could be temporarily insane….

Oh bless MaizieD now what has upset you?

The thought that you have a vote, ronib

Casdon facts are not always truth. That’s the problem.

😱😱😱

Casdon Sun 24-Nov-24 22:18:07

I’m talking about facts though ronib, not opinions. There are often fact check articles, responsible news reports, statistics, reports of what exactly people said, etc. etc.

M0nica Sun 24-Nov-24 22:14:04

Anyone can stand up and give their opinion, but if it is not then available to be questioned and agreed or disagreed with, you might as well talk to the wind, because eventually no one will listen.

ronib Sun 24-Nov-24 22:09:46

Casdon your definition of a lie could be somewhat biased?

Well, I have always shown myself very willing to keep playing the game in a conversation with someone I disagree with.

That is where you I differ, if someone posts about something or other that I disagree with, I would never, ever tell them they are talking rubbish because that is their opinion and not mine.

Everyone has a right to post their views without being told they are talking a load of tosh.

I think it depends whether you disagree because of your own views/values, or whether you disagree because the other poster has said something which you know to be factually incorrect. We’re all entitled to express our own views on issues, but we shouldn’t lie, knowingly or unknowingly and expect to go unchallenged.

ronib Sun 24-Nov-24 21:50:00

I like getting feedback - as it usually moves my thoughts on - or just reinforces how ahead of the game I am 🙃

No they don't. They have a right to post their views but they have no right to exemption from criticism.

There are ways of disagreeing without being so disrespectful of others.

Over 1 million signatures and rising

ronib Sun 24-Nov-24 14:05:48

Given that MPs are not replying to letters, what are the options of letting Labour know exactly how their badly thought out and poorly applied policies are doing? The petition for a new GE is a clumsy way of asking this government to listen. Fond hope! The petition runs until May 2025 - don’t forget to sign.
