Trump wanting us to ditch Europe.

Saw in the Times that is what he wants. If our government gets taken in by (America First) Trump then we will never vote Labour again and we have been life long Labour supporters. Trump has selected a ridiculous cabinet and we need to be REALLY careful about trusting them. As the Bank of England said we had to make headway with Europe and trade to reduce the untold harm that Brexit has done to us. So thank you Farage and Boris Johnson. Thank you so much for dishing out the lies.

I just can't imagine Starmer coping at all with a war if it happened. He has back tracked on almost all of his manifesto so I don't think anyone would know which way to turn.
IMO he's in the running for the worst PM we have ever had.

In which specific ways has he back tracked on his manifesto sazz1? Big claim to make with no information.

I rather hoped someone - well you - could say what is the point about pension funds and the Bank of England? MaizieD

I'm delighted to hear that Caroline Lucas and Dominic Grieve KC are taking over from Michael Heseltine as Co-presidents of the European Movement UK.. to push pro European ideas.. all those who are pro rejoining the EU can join this movement..

Yes, great choice.

But can anyone explain what the real issues are?

What 'real issues'?

You can all say what you like - But Liz Truss talks sense!

Allira Tue 19-Nov-24 12:20:35

If we can just put Liz Truss to one side

Oh, please!
😀

ronib Tue 19-Nov-24 12:18:22

If we can just put Liz Truss to one side, exactly what is the argument about the Bank of England and not regulating pension funds properly? In what way is it improper? If anyone can explain please.

I think that Liz Truss is best ignored.

She keeps popping up like a bad penny

No shame.

Liz Truss has declared that Britain needs its own version of Donald Trump and is calling for a right-wing 'revolution'.

She has told an audience at a New Delhi summit that she has no regrets about her 49 days in office. Apparently, the market backlash against her £45 billion of unfunded tax cuts was all down to the BoE's failure to "regulate pension funds properly".

Claiming that the Tories lost the July election in because they “didn’t pursue policies that were Conservative enough”, Ms Truss suggested that her party will need to join forces with Mr Farage. (Source: MSN news)

The Guardian today quoted Starmer doubling down on helping Ukraine - just like to point out that double down is a gambling term which means effectively doubling up. So Starmer wants to increase support for Ukraine not decrease.
The English language…. and communication.

ronib Tue 19-Nov-24 07:34:50

sazzl Starmer is bound to be out of the country when war kicks off…. Will he return is the question?

ronib Tue 19-Nov-24 06:55:26

Talking about information and misinformation in politics explains why I got into something of a discussion about the half billion pounds worth of a deal with Germany. That might not be a deal but so on. I need to wise up ….

Democratic vote by the British people to leave the EU. Nothing to discuss.

Democratic vote certainly… but by feeding the voters mis- and dis-information.
How can the voters have made an informed vote when the info supplied was suspect at the very least…?

I say "thank you David Cameron for asking a question that is so complicated that Joe Public didn't stand a chance in hell of being able to answer and then running away when it didn't go your way". Stupid is as stupid does and he really did a blinder.

Just in case you don’t open MaizieD’s link, you can’t miss the heading. Please note the word agreement

MaizieD Mon 18-Nov-24 18:05:44

It's a joint venture. The two nations are collaborating on building ad developing tanks and arms. They aren't selling to each other...

I expect the half a billion comes from our government. Forge Masters belongs to the UK govt....

MaizieD with half a billion on the table, I would hope so….. but I think components are being manufactured in Sheffield and sold to Germany. But what do I know?

MaizieD Mon 18-Nov-24 17:38:10

All the links provided suggest that there will be a half billion boost to the British economy as the defence industries of these two nations come closer together.
This agreement is the first of its kind and the UK and Germany will share equitably all costs and benefits unless otherwise provided for by the agreement.
To my way of thinking this is in fact a trade agreement since the Uk stands to gain a half billion boost to the British economy.

It would only be a trade deal if the UK were selling components to Germany.

Are they?

I remember living near an American air base in the 70s, wouldn't be surprised if the UK is being sized up as an American nuclear base 😟

Probably, and isolated politically, geographically and economically, from Europe- be the prime targets in on the European Continent.

The vote for Brexit was built on false impressions of life without the lunacy from Europe. My view is that it would have been better to have stayed and change from the inside than the outside. I totally agreed that there was massive wastage in the EU but my main concern was the erosion of employment laws. There was no plan made for what would happen after the vote or if there was - I did not see it.
Trump will only be in power for 4 years so any trade deals can only last that long- the EU should outlive that period
So i know where my alliance would be and it would not be with the USA
