I agree with you Oreo.
Farmers produce our food. If many farms have to sell land in order to pay IHT then I’m afraid the big conglomerates will move in and they will farm to the lowest possible common denominator. And we’ll have to import more food from abroad and that will cause more global warming.

If you can’t see the distinction then no point in discussing it.

You can say that about any business “human cost”.

She is not a good interviewer! GB news is a business which is just in it to make as much money as possible. Ordinary small farms/farmers will not be affected. There are other family businesses who have to pay! As a family when our elderly spinster aunt died leaving under one million in assets her estate had to pay inheritance tax. What is good enough for one person should be the same for all.

No it shouldn’t.
Farmers are food producers your spinster aunt wasn’t.
Just as hospices, care homes and GP surgeries should be exempt from the hike in NI for their employees but have been lumped under the heading ‘businesses’ in RR’s quest for more money.Yes they’re businesses but it’s the health of the nation.
If any have to close, and some will do, what’s the human cost?

I do however empathise with farmers in terms of how much they receive for their produce, particularly compared to how much we end up paying for it.

I too would prefer to buy locally sourced produce.

I still cannot fathom why some of them voted to leave Brexit.

Also one reason for the change is (allegedly) to stop famous rich people buying farms and playing at farming, to avoid inheritance tax.

The Farming community is different and it is difficult to equate it with other businesses. I don't know how it compares with businesses such as family-run hotels, for example.

Personally, is it any different to any other family business?? Hotels are asset rich and cash poor, and I’m sure that there are other family run businesses.

A friend of mine has a husband, separated but still married, whose mother owned a large arable farm, some of which hadn’t been farmed for years, a very large farmhouse and at least two other residences in her land. She sadly died late last year. No child is going to take over the farm, no animals to sell or slaughter and three siblings inheritating the lot, much of which will be sold on after probate. Some of the land has in principle planning permission, tripling the value. Is this fair? No inheritance tax? Possibly capital gains, possibly not!

Camilla was interviewing a farmer this morning and he was put ting the farmers point across and she offered to host a debate between farmers and Starmer and Rachel Reeves
Doubt They’ll take it up but the offer is there..

I think inviting the Labour Party to participate in a discussion with farmers and others concerned with the land and food would be relevant on any news outlet.

The thread on the Farmers has shown just how complex are the issues of land costs/ownership/farms/food costs/supermarkets driving costs down/ the public changing food tastes and buying hug amounts of imported out of season food and so on.

It's up to the Labour Party to send the person they deem most involved and knowledgeable with this gamut of issues for a really productive discussion.

I didn’t see the Camilla Tominey programme this morning, so not influenced by that. I was watching SkyNews.

I stand with the farmers. I’m not a farmer. I want as much as possible of our food to be produced in this country, by our farmers, not by big conglomerates.
Might be a feeble hope.

Will she host more, one for those who desperately need the lost WFA, one for the small businesses that won’t cope with the NI contribution increase? I’m sure there are others who have a point of view on government changes.

Re G B News------do you know what populism is? That news agency makes money from big business. Farming is mostly big business.

I’m torn about the whole farmer v govt on Inheritance Tax.

I don’t really understand how they were totally exempt even though residential property was involved.

I can see both sides of the argument.

The residential property is probably of least value on a farm.
