I know that money does not grow on trees but I sometimes wonder about others ideas, and out of all the royals you may not feel it’s a lot to spend on a memorial, but imagine that you were allowed to decide what to spend £46 million of the UK’s money, what would you do?

My heads whizzing so I’m off for a lie down!

Become a philanthropist (I will need educating on how!)

NanKate Fri 20-Dec-24 14:26:50

I would give a big chunk of it to V Z in Ukraine and tell him to defeat that murdering tyrant Putin.

Where the hell do they get this figure from. Is it going to be in solid gold. She does deserve a monument but not at this price. Someone’s having a laugh.

We have a bronze statue of HM on the waterfront in our town. It was put up to commemorate her becoming the longest reigning monarch, paid for by local businesses etc it cost around £225,000. That is good enough for us here. We could do with the other £45 million.

I have relatives who would benefit greatly from owning their own homes so I'd see to them first. Put enough aside to see the two of us through our lifetime. Then I'd look at what charities to support.

Lollin Thu 19-Dec-24 07:57:20

I just can’t get my head round such figures. I’ve been looking at the websites of various well know charities and even with limited insight, I know it would be a drop in an ever increasing ocean. The gap between those who seem to have it all and those who manage and those who live in poverty is still wide but up to 46million is just well I don’t know why it would need that much and why don’t they ever break down the figures I don’t know that either, ok imagine it was ‘just’ the lower figure of 23 million that’s still eye-watering, to me at least.

I'm surprised there isn't more outrage about this, to be honest. I'm not a royalist - far from it - but I do agree that there should be some kind of memorial, but £46million is utterly ridiculous. Think how many hungry children that could feed - and that's just one example. Let the RF pay for it - let's face it, they can afford it.

I agree.

NiftyGirl Wed 18-Dec-24 21:11:33

I totally agree. An artwork from a new artist or sculpture could cost around £1000 and be a fine memorial. The remainder to be spent on families and singletons who live on or under the poverty line. We desperately need to train nurses and doctors so some could be invested in making that possible for those who want to work in the NHS, but who don't have enough funding! So many good causes could be helped.

£46 million is the kind of money that could transform the hospice sector. That would be my choice for the money and it might lessen the demands for assisted dying.
I'm not a fan of the Royal Family but I would have thought that they could fund a memorial to the late Queen themselves. It should be freely available for all to view (as for example in the case of Nelson's Column).

It would hardly touch the surface. Hospices cost £millions to run each year and there are about 200 in the UK.

Oh for god's sake behave, the journo said it 'could' cost that much maybe maybe maybe. Nothing like a bit of shit stirring to get upset about.

I think it's obscene to spend so much on a memorial, especially when the King's coronation cost £70+ million.
She would not need an extortionate amount to spent in order to be remembered.

She would not need an extortionate amount to spent in order to be remembered.
Especially as most people will never see it.
If it's as awful as the ones of HM and D of E in Northern Ireland, then it would be money wasted and really quite an insult.

A living memorial or scheme to help young people would be far better. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, The Prince's Trust both help so many young people and are so worthwhile.

If the money were mine, I’d spend it like MOnica upthread.
Otherwise I’m totally opposed to spending that sort of money on a memorial such as some construction in stone or whatever.. when the WASPI women and pensioners are being deprived.
I wouldn’t disagree with a forest though, we need more trees!
Perhaps the land could be provided by King Charles surrendering his wretched grouse moors. If he were a true environmentalist, he should be replacing them with re-wilding schemes and plantings, and dedicating the area to his mother would be just the thing.

Trees may well not be suited to growing on some areas of moorland

Moors, including grouse moors, are vital for the environment and ecology as many birds are ground nesting, not tree nesting.
Peat lands on moors store carbon. The 1992 Rio Convention on Biodiversity recognised the global importance of UK heather moorland; 75% of heather moorland are in the UK.
We need a variety of different environments for the future of different native species.

I’d create as many allotments as possibly throughout the uk protected in perpetuity, attached to schools, colleges, sheltered housing and similar.

£46 million is an absolutely ridiculous amount for a memorial to the Queen. Don't the decision makers know just how many people are feeling the pinch at the moment?? I'd like to see a break down showing how that figure has been calculated, but I'd put it on the back boiler if the tax payer is expected to fund it, or at least until her ordinary subjects feel more prosperous . A crowd funding project could be launched to raise the money from hose people and organisations who want one......

Tizliz Wed 18-Dec-24 15:26:33

I think the age of memorial statues is past. The best memorial would be a scheme like the 'Duke of Edinburgh's Award

Was just discussing this with OH, great minds …..

Oh dear I thought it said what would you do with money you won. Whoops brain fog

sazz1 Wed 18-Dec-24 14:00:29

Book a 1st class flight to Paris and travel to the airport via taxi. Ring OH and tell him to join me there. Tell him I've won some money but not how much. Arrange a pet hotel for the dogs and enjoy Paris for 2 weeks. Pay someone in Paris to trace my long lost relatives and contact them via letters.
Pay my adult children's mortgages off and gift them all 500k each including each DGC.
Send a large donation to the local dogs home and gifts for all the staff. Search for my dream home which is a small 2 bed stone built cottage near a town with a large garden. Employ a daily cleaner and gardener. Go on several cruises around the world.
Never tell anyone how much I actually won and no publicity.

Not happy with giving royals all the money we do, but the Queen did serve our country well despite my lefty views I'd think that lovely memorial gardens that all can visit - free - would serve the purpose very well.

Grannymel12 Wed 18-Dec-24 13:24:55

I agree, benefit more people that way.

knspol Wed 18-Dec-24 13:06:38

I'm not a royalist by any means but I do think it's fitting for some sort of memorial for the late Queen but no way should that amount of our money be spent on it. Why can't the Royals pay for it themselves especially considering the state of the country nowadays. I'm surprised the Queen didn't plan for some sort of memorial as part of her funeral arrangements, wonder what she would think of the anticipated cost.

Babamaman Wed 18-Dec-24 13:06:33

Should not be spent! Awful waste of money - we don’t need yet another monument!

Vykk Wed 18-Dec-24 12:48:43

£46 million ? I'd pay-off my John Lewis bill and then just squander the remaining fiver smile
