The world’s most successful business man wants to support Reform. The Tories and Labour will be bricking it.

It's expensive for UK firms to pay the tariffs through the Panama Canal as well. Trump is sabre/rattling.

imaround Fri 27-Dec-24 21:16:16

Maremia: I wondered about the Greenland threat. But it makes sense since he has already threatened Canada, Mexico, the UK and now Panama.

I know the government in Panama is seizing Trump hotels for tax evasion, so I thought that was it. Along with the resources in Greenland and Canada. But now I wonder if this is bigger then that.

Musk may be pushing for the valuable minerals, but I think Trump has his eyes on the effects on NATO if he controls from Greenland to the Panama canal. Especially since he holds Putin in such high regards.

Or maybe it is a different reason all together. It is not normal to destabilize the relationships of our closest allies though.

imaround Fri 27-Dec-24 21:01:49

So much for the champion of free speech and doing the right thing for America.

After several people, both MAGA and Democrats, pushed back on X after Musk and Ramaswamy said they need to import tech workers over hiring Americans, he has removed their check marks, removed their subscribers, and in some cases given them suspensions on X. Because they pushed back and said that America First means hiring American workers over immigrants.

There were over 141,000 tech workers laid off in the US in 2024. They are struggling to find jobs in the tech sector.

Musk wants to import H1B workers because they work longer hours and less pay than American workers do. He says it is because of their culture that they need to be prioritized over US workers, who he called mediocre at first, then later used the slur for differently abled people.

I hope that MAGA turns on him and Trump divests him from power before Jan 20th.

Maremia Fri 27-Dec-24 15:39:02

Yes DroppedOut, I remember that incident. After calling the hero a pedophile, Musk quickly backtracked, saying it didn't mean that in his native country, and that everyone calling him out, mis-understood him. I have seen nothing since then to admire.
Apparently the possible spat with Greenland is because Musk needs the rare minerals to found there.

You can report anything which breaks guidelines, but it is MN/GN who decide the guidelines.

Elegran Fri 27-Dec-24 14:21:14

There are "Guidelines" but how they are applied varies according to whether a post has been reported or ignored by other posters, and who is monitoring those reports. As a general rule, it takes at least one report about a post to bring it to the attention of GNHQ, and they may or may not take action after they have inspected it.

Are there rules or an etiquette for chatting, or do we tolerate those who are unconventional about what chatting is

I think you missed my (instant) follow-up post at 12:47:48 yesterday to the one you quote, where I clarified it by saying "To Dropped-Out, not to PoliticsNerd"

Ok, well I just don't think anyone should be dying because they couldn't afford insulin (something that costs cents to make), just for an obscenely rich person to just become richer.

That's a very American problem.

Then you need to campaign for Americans to stop demonising the national health schemes normal in European countries as "socialist death lists" and to start instead looking at the aims and policies of those schemes. No-one dies because they can't afford insulin in Europe, or because a hospiatal rejects them because they have no health insurance or their skin is the wrong colour. These national initiatives are not just a last-ditch attempt to treat the very poor, either, they are for the whole community, who are the biggest resource the country has.

I'm not at all sure why you think I need to take instruction from you, or why you expect America, a so far democratic country, to take instruction from me.

Perhaps I should be flattered that you think I have that power but as an average British citizen I simply don't. Neither, I would guess, do you.

I have come to the conclusion that some people have little or no self awareness.

Lol, you're the only one who read (or at least acknowledged) my ramble on elon.

~Thank you

^Apart from finding it a laughable bit of 'advice' - don't you also feel a tad annoyed that anyone would presume to tell you to 'educate yourself'? Whichever side of the debate they are on?^

I agree. 'Educate yourself' is just shorthand for go away and come back when you agree with me.

Like that "wake up sheeple" which was a popular 'argument' on social media sites during the COVID epidemic / lockdown period from those who appeared to believe that virtually overnight, the whole world had colluded to subjugate and control its citizens via vaccinations and lockdowns.

... although the more polite were - well, more polite when urging others to 'wise-up' to the plotting and scheming of the "deep state" and to educate themselves.

MayBee70 Mon 23-Dec-24 17:18:27

I have no intention of starting an argument on the decluttering thread. Or anywhere else on gransnet for that matter,

Does sounding superior amount to bullying?

It can. It's a generalisation anyway.

If the threads are all about what we had for lunch, decluttering, do we like Yorkshire puddings with turkey etc GN could become anodyne and boring.

It's interesting to read the views of others even if we disagree and there are some posts which do come across as condescending and superior.

I should look to your reading matter if I were you
Is that acceptable?
It does come across as intolerant of others' views imo.

So are you implicating that the decluttering thread is anodyne and boring? Isn’t that a bit superior?

😂😂😂

You know I'm on the decluttering thread!

I mean it's not likely to cause offence or disagreement which is one of the meanings of anodyne. Another meaning is something to relieve pain which the decluttering thread does, I hope.
But I'm sure an argument could be started on there if you'd like that!!

Yes.

Likewise the command Discuss which I have seen on GN, one fairly recently at the end of a lengthy OP.

I thought that I'm not in the Sixth Form Debating Society, I'm thought this was a chat forum.
So my immediate reaction was to say No thanks and scroll on by.

The reason educate yourself makes me laugh is twofold.
Firstly it was most recently used as a strategy by those responding to womens concerns about single sex spaces and concerns around the transition of children. The 'educators' were wrong and have caused considerable damage.
Secondly I see no evidence that the 'educators' have anything useful to say , they seem to be of the view that telling people they are stupid is an effective political strategy. I disagree and think they have ensured a Trump victory and are more than likely going to ensure Reforms success. I dont want to be educated by people I dont necessarily trust and whose values I dont share. It is pushing even those like myself (centre left) away.

The reason educate yourself makes me laugh is twofold.

Years ago, during the run-up to the Referendum, there was a woman on Facebook who - if you disagreed with her - would tell you to "get educated", and list a selection of dubious You-Tube channels promoting what turned out to be probable conspiracy theories. The alternative 'command' was to "do your research" based on the assumption I assume that no-one had prior to commenting.

I don't think its a coincedence that Fox News is the most watched "news" source in america (by a large margin at that) and that trump won 2 out of 3 elections in america.

And that elon isn't seen by a lot as a creepy, immoral, dumb, manchild that would never be even close to where he is now if he wasnt born to an emerald mine owner.

Those who watch his words and actions (and possibly even are intimate with the history his decade+ public presence) beg to differ.

I still remember those kids stuck in a tight, underwater cave. During the brainstorming phase of their complex rescue operation; Elon butted in (on twitter) with his suggestion of a high-tech submarine, and was dismissed so quickly (because it was so simply dumb as the sub is way too big to get amywhere near them. It was dismissed by a lot (on twitter), but most prominently was the man who actually made and did the rescue plan that later saved those kids.

Elon, in retort, called the man a pedophile.

That was my first clue that he isn't the brilliant, cool Tony Stark (Iron Man) that he would like us to believe (there's a reason he camoed as himself in Iron Man 2)

He isnt the tech genius who invented rockets, teslas, twitter. He just used daddies money to win in the capitilist playground/hellscape.

DroppeddOut Sun 22-Dec-24 23:38:20

Fox News admitted in federal court (as a defense against a lawsuit), that a reasonable person wouldn't consider them as a an actual news source.

Legally speaking, despite their purposefully deceiptive name (that surprisingly doesnt break any laws) they're not a news source (which has more stringent regulation); they're a media source,
