Denmark boosts Greenland's defence after Trump repeats desire for US control

Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Denmark increased its military defences to level never seen before to protect against the threatened invasion by Trump and the USA.

We should perhaps remember Denmark's history. It was invaded in 1940 by Hitler when he declared Jutland a part of Germany. At the end of the 1940s, in direct response to the invasion and to seeing the British Navy wrest control of the North Sea from Germany, Denmark joined NATO. So a threat to Greenland is a threat to all NATO countries including the UK.

Trump is playing with fire and yet there are those who still underrate his mania and actually seem to want us to become part if his, so far, thankfully, imaginary empire.

I agree, which is why I have reported it.

I really don’t see how Israel comes into this thread. In fact I think it is deliberate nasty troublemaking.

I agree. Trump has issued a whole number of threats, many domestic: as regards undocumented workers/borders, as regards huge budget cuts, as regards tariffs. He's threatened legal action against his "enemies".

OTOH, he is already back-pedalling on some campaign promises like

" he often told supporters he would bring down costs by increasing the energy supply, which would have a ripple effect on overall prices.

“Prices will come down. You just watch. They’ll come down, and they’ll come down fast. Not only with insurance, with everything,” Trump told supporters in North Carolina in August.

Now he's saying,
"But in comments to Time on Nov. 25, Trump was more circumspect about his ability to bring down the cost of groceries.

Asked if his presidency would be a failure if prices did not decline, Trump said he didn’t think so. “Look, they got them up. I’d like to bring them down. It’s hard to bring things down once they’re up. You know, it’s very hard,” Trump said. "

"But Trump had also been more nuanced in recent days in speaking about the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, a war he said on the debate stage in September he would end “before even becoming president.”

The president-elect told reporters at a news conference this week he thought it would be more difficult to resolve the situation in Ukraine than it would be to lower tensions in the Middle East, a region that is rife with conflicts involving Israel, Iran, Syria and various proxy groups."

TBH what I think Trump is doing, is to use the power of the threat, which he thinks will soften the target in order to make a deal.

It is tactics he’s used before.

However, this type of negotiation only has limited use imo before people begin to say “do your worst” or “bugger off” in more colloquial language.

My post meant that I do not believe my making or not making a comment about other situations is relevant M0nica.

Trump is an American Real Estate developer and investor. He is just using his business tactics on larger areas of "real estate". He really knows very little about politics or diplomacy.

My last sentence was probably just written because I was in a hurry to do smething else. There are moments when we all feel powerless against those manipulate our lives.

Just one addition Petra. What I did or didn't say about China is irrelevant. It's not going to affect this situation as I have no power - nor do you.

Every situation has a context, both for the subject and the commentator. Your last sentenc above, is strange . It seems to suggest that your original post is irrelevant. Is that what you are saying.

I find Trump's desire to think he can simply buy sovereignity, unnerving. What makes him think that other countries are for sale? What makes him think that its occupants would want to change their nationality and give up their independence to be part of the USA?

Is he attempting to do with money what Putin is trying to do with force in Ukraine? And what will Trump do when all the countries he would like to 'own' say 'Thanks, but no thanks'?

Quite scary. They also have the port of Darwin. Even more scary.

I don’t think he would actually invade but he might try to ‘buy’ Greenland in the way China ‘buys’ half the Pacific region countries. A bit more subtle than Putin with his straight out invasion of Ukraine but the same sort of idea.

It was quite a revelation to see how much China has increased its presence in the South Pacific (including leasing parts of Australia) when we toured there.

I hope your fears are not realised CandaianGran. I love Canada for its uniqueness.

Whitwavemark2, I have been so angry about Trump's insults to Canada. Calling our Prime Minister the governor of Canada, and indeed calling Canada the 51st state. It horrifies me, and, once said in jest; he has picked it up a few more times, enough for it to be all over the media. If you keep saying something, it begins be ingrained in people's mind.

He also states that his country is tired of subsidizing ours, thinking a trade deficit equals funding our economy. He is turning the minds of Americans to think they are pouring money into Canada, when they could just take what the want with a bit of force. It's very frightening.

However, a lot of right-conservative Canadians, especially younger ones, love Trump, and have vocalized joining the States isn't a bad idea. Our political scene is in turmoil at the moment, with Trudeau expected to resign in the new year, with no clear replacement, and Conservatives ranking high in the polls. I'm frightened for our political future in the near future.

Trump pushing for Panama Canal and Greenland is another of his expansion threats. Scary.

Oh and of course The Virgin Islands, they got renamed I think - can’t remember what their name was before the sale from Denmark I think?

The Danish Antilles.

But who did they belong to before the Danes arrived?
St Croix belonged to the French West India Company.
