Afghan women are being removed from Afghan society!

This is the latest ruling by the Taliban.

Women and girls are now living in total isolation, basically they are slaves to their fathers, brothers and husbands.

The English National Cricket team are due to play Afghanistan on 26th February in the ICC Champions Trophy.

I and many others are calling for England to refuse to play this match, what do others GN members think?

Silverling48 Fri 03-Jan-25 16:17:10

This thread is not about immigration but a petition objecting to a cricket match next month on Lahore in order to highlight the way women in Afghanistan are repressed by the taliban.

Disheartening to say the least.

Just tried to sign.
The reason there are not many signatures is, I think, because the site is asking for money (!) it is wanting to know where we live, and (in my case) has an incorrect post code ........ we're always being told to watch out for scammers, and something feels not-quite-right.
So sorry - no signature - I'll find some other way of showing support.

If you're concerned about your privacy just put in a different postcode and remain anonymous.

I think many of these Change.org appeals ask for a donation but you don't have to give if you don't want to.

I thought Mumsnetters would be more incensed, frankly.

MissAdventure Fri 03-Jan-25 16:07:38

There is the option to skip the donation, the sharing, and just sign.
You just click that option.

Fair enough, though, if people don't feel safe.

Still only 995 signatures.
Really disappointing show.

Cossy Fri 03-Jan-25 16:01:15

Signed.

Silverling48 Fri 03-Jan-25 15:58:05

They might be afraid of the Taliban.

ExDancer Fri 03-Jan-25 15:55:53

What are Afgan men afraid of?

Sign the petition please, everyone.

This is a heartless, cruel, fanatic, slave driven and disasterous regime.

I have signed Change Org quite sometime ago and shall repeat in a couple of minutes.

I have tears when I think of these poor females of all ages who suffer in silence.

Jeanathome Fri 03-Jan-25 15:22:03

What would you call it to assume that all male inhabitants of a country of 43 million think and act the same?

And there lies the problem maize with your last two words. I will not comment again.

Doesnt it get tiresome to have that word flung at us because of perfectly justified concerns around worries about those entering our country illegally.

MissAdventure Fri 03-Jan-25 13:24:24

Mumsnet has a forum dedicated to feminism, so perhaps it's on there?

Some posters here also use mumsnet, so perhaps they can share it on there.

Silverling48 Fri 03-Jan-25 11:31:05

I don’t know how one finds out if it’s on MN.
Anyone know?

Septimia Fri 03-Jan-25 10:49:30

The Taliban are being very short-sighted - "cutting off their noses to spite their faces". As others have asked, "What are they afraid of?"

What we don't know is the extent to which ordinary men agree with them. What happens in the home will, no doubt, vary and many households will quietly behave differently with the women having more freedom indoors. Of course, the whole household might have to be careful that the Taliban don't find out.

I do know that in some Islamic countries there is more equality between husbands and wives at home than the overall picture of that society suggests.

I would love to see Afghan women get together and walk across the border to freedom...

I shall now go and sign the petition!

Silverling48 Fri 03-Jan-25 10:48:34

947 signatures so far.

Allira Fri 03-Jan-25 10:47:42

Is it on Mumsnet? They attract more visitors to their site

Silverling48 Fri 03-Jan-25 10:45:40

It was not far off 1000 when I looked earlier, not too bad for a new petition, but great if more grans and their shares signed.

Fairislecable Fri 03-Jan-25 10:42:24

I have signed and I am also shocked there are not more signatures.

MissAdventure Fri 03-Jan-25 10:37:45

Roughly double the signatures on the petition than there was when I first saw it.

I was hoping for many more, really.

Yes, I did sign yesterday.

sorry Allira I should have been clearer.. I was encouraging other people to sign.. and agreeing with your post

Signed. Hasn't it occurred to the Taliban that by withholding proper medical care from women during pregnancy and birth that they are putting the lives of unborn boys in danger? I don't suppose they care about girls but even they are needed to continue the supply of future males. But logic doesn't enter into it.

I was going to post a similar comment vintage1950 but you put it so well that there is no need.

I would add that, although some people think sport and politics should be kept separate, this is such an extreme case of violation of human rights that an exception should be made.

I can't wondering what the Taliban are afraid of happening if their iron grip on male supremacy is not maintained.

And how many men are we allowing in this country who believe in this?

Absolutely loads!

Really? How do you know? Have you spoken to them?

My Afghan friends absolutely despise the Taliban.

R, an acquaintance who was an interpreter for the British forces has half his family here, the other half including his daughters left behind.

He must be worried sick about them.

I did mention earlier about seeing the Afghan teenage girls coming out of school the other week, incidentally it's a mixed school, and I hope they will make the very best of their education here and one day be able to make a difference.

Medieval is the wrong word because even in medieval times, women were not treated like this.

Absolutely. Why do we think people leave? Men can and do despise the Taliban and instead of supporting them we get a series of dark hints about letting "them" (unspecified hints they will attack women) in.

I wish there were more we could do in the meantime I hope this will get more publicity as the football is a good focus to bring it to peoples attention.
