My sis in law and niece had to pack up car yesterday with the hurricane winds throwing up more fires ready to evacuate but hurricane winds changed..They live in Anaheim Orange County
they are soo scared and exhausted and the air quality is really bad although 7 miles away from an ongoing fire
.watching the images it truly looks apocalyptic and terrifying
they are considering relocating back to the UK
IVE asked them to come
apparently firefighters are/ running out of water
.climate changes are really dire IMO
🙏🙏

How many of us does not have a packet of almonds or pistachios in the cupboard?

No farmers no food.
No water, no farmers.

petra Sat 11-Jan-25 21:01:42

This is a very good piece on who’s taking all the water.
Mother Jones is an environmental group.

One of the properties that has survived is built of concrete and stone with a fireproof roof, also was built with supports many metres into the bedrock to give it safety in an earthquake. All the other properties around it (and they are pretty close) have been decimated.

Except the one next door but one and the one next door to that and the large property up the hill.

Yes, it's rather misleading as are other photos of that property.
Perhaps they were all of similar construction?
Strange how swathes of houses were burnt down completely, others untouched.

Reminds me of that Eagles song, The Last Resort - Call some place paradise, kiss it goodbye.

Christchurch, cities near Mount Etna, towns in Iceland, so many towns and cities around the world.

Living on the edge.

I know, there’s even a modern Pompeii built above some of the ruins of the old one. I wouldn’t want to live there (or in Los Angeles). I really wonder if some of it will ever be rebuilt, such enormous acreage has burned to the ground.

It reminds me a bit of Pompeii. I think there will be more bodies.
I read today of a family that had been forced to travel over 200 miles to find a motel with vacancies, because so many people had been displaced. Imagine that.

Yet millions of people live in Naples and surrounds, despite the fact that Vesuvius is still active.

This is an issue that Trump has been calling out for years. 2018 and 2020 he was calling for better maintenance of the land. So I guess he's just reminding folk. Should have held off for a while though.

The fires are just horrendous. I do hope they're all contained and rebuilding can start as soon as possible.

*The Governor of California, @GavinNewsom, has done a terrible job of forest management. I told him from the first day we met that he must ‘clean’ his forest floors regardless of what his bosses, the environmentalists, DEMAND of him. Must also do burns and cut fire stoppers," the former and upcoming president posted to X in 2019. *

Let’s not re-write history. Trump was criticsing political opponents. This issue of a dry California long pre-dates his recent presidential campaigns and he wasn’t close to being a driver of any solution. It’s this kind of revisionist history that is dangerous. I would know, I lived there for years. Reading recent headlines to make Trump look better won’t cut it in the face of the truth.

He wasn’t advocating for the environment. He and greedy Republicans have been against any type of water conservation for years. They are very historically anti-climate change, anti-environment and he the Bushes have consistently filled their administrations with anti-enviornment, anti-regulation business people. Why post typical political jargon when his track record, the real proof says otherwise? Trump being an advocate of solving the drought is fake news, folks.

Exactly, he shamefully junps on the bandwagon.

I've previously posted a link of Trump mocking anc criticising everyone who has been advocating for a reduction of water use. Just disgusting

Tragically, the poor in California have not had clean water to drink for a long time, and can't afford bottled water. And tragically, and the plain truth- those in Malibu and Palisades areas, the very rich- are the ones who have overused water with little respect for the shortages, for swimming pools, lush gardens, golf courses, etc.

Hello BlessedArt. Thank you for your contributions.

Unimaginable.

And I think of the people of Gaza and other wars.

I think they'll find a lot more bodies FGT and I wonder about the owners of all those burnt out cars. .How did they escape?

2nd car probably

A lot of rough sleepers in the woods.
And arsonists.
Tinder dry.
Then add in the wind factor.
Cutting back fire defences.
Lack of water.

A perfect storm, sadly.

100%. Going to be even more homeless sadly 😔

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 11-Jan-25 16:12:45

Add in electrical faults from cable lines.

Wyllow3 Sat 11-Jan-25 15:48:51

Major drought/climate change too.

From the Telegraph:

“Los Angeles neighbours described how they chased down a suspected arsonist and restrained him with cable ties in a dramatic citizens’ arrest while the city burned and homes were devoured by the worst fires in living memory.

Peter Kay, 40, said he “would have done anything necessary” to prevent more fires spreading across Woodland Hills in Los Angeles and destroying their homes.

He added that he was the first to spot the stranger in the leafy neighbourhood holding a blowtorch rummaging near his bins on Thursday afternoon.

Mr Kay described how he sped after the suspect in his white Mercedes until he found him attempting to start a fire near another property and shouted to neighbours to help. They poured out of their homes and the group all pitched in to push the man to the floor and restrain him with plastic zip ties while they called 911 and waited for police.

With the cause of the original fires still unknown, Los Angeles neighbourhoods have become gripped with anxiety amid fears the infernos are being started by arsonists.

Five minutes later, eight police cars pulled up, including arson detectives, who took the suspect away to interview him.

Dominic Choi, LAPD divisional chief, said the suspect would not face arson charges because there was “not enough probable cause”. The man was arrested on a felony probation violation.”

Sounds more likely than a back yard fire!

Also the water basin has been very low for many years because of their love of swimming pools, golf courses and watering their gardens.. If there is a big rebuild, and who would want to do that in such a risky area, there will have to be a big move towards water conservation.. and presumably de-salination plants..

They were questioning the other day whether in fact it would be a good idea to rebuild in such a risky area, prone to fires and earthquakes.

Humankind has always lived in danger zones, such as on the fertile slopes of volcanoes, in areas prone to earthquakes, fires, so perhaps they will rebuild but there is going to have to be a national effort to do so.
It will be difficult to find insurers willing to take the risk in future too.

Plenty on here slating Trump! But not the incompetence of Newsom, or Bass!

Indeed!

Looks like the residents have turned though. I think there will be a few resignations.
