My sis in law and niece had to pack up car yesterday with the hurricane winds throwing up more fires ready to evacuate but hurricane winds changed..They live in Anaheim Orange County… they are soo scared and exhausted and the air quality is really bad although 7 miles away from an ongoing fire….watching the images it truly looks apocalyptic and terrifying…they are considering relocating back to the UK …IVE asked them to come… apparently firefighters are/ running out of water….climate changes are really dire IMO

We have friends who kept several horses and also stabled others in the Malibu Area. After the last fire in the region, they realised that they probably would not have been able to save the horses had the fire not been contained. They sold up and moved to a much safer area.

This is an issue that Trump has been calling out for years. 2018 and 2020 he was calling for better maintenance of the land. So I guess he's just reminding folk. Should have held off for a while though.

The fires are just horrendous. I do hope they're all contained and rebuilding can start as soon as possible.

*The Governor of California, @GavinNewsom, has done a terrible job of forest management. I told him from the first day we met that he must ā€˜clean’ his forest floors regardless of what his bosses, the environmentalists, DEMAND of him. Must also do burns and cut fire stoppers," the former and upcoming president posted to X in 2019. *

Do some FactChecking of your own instead of just believing what that LIAR Trump writes… if his mouth is open it’s usually a LIE that comes out!

No-one is denying that a range of factors are the cause- but denying climate change, extreme heat, lack of rain which has depleted reservoirs and water tables- is nonsensical.

I didn't.

Claremont Sun 12-Jan-25 16:09:45

Nom undines did. And Trump. He mocked all 'lefty' measures to attempt to save water. And in this video, after the last fires, and at the enquiry, he denied climate change and science, and said no need to worry, it will get cooler. Video here

The links you put up are hardly unbiased.
The first one is the governor’s own website.
The second one from CBS. A left leaning news outlet that is very much against trump.
And as per I have to give a disclaimer that I don’t support Trump. You won’t get the truth from either of these links.

I don't have a television, so have to rely on what is posted on line. I read that the inferno was started by an arsonist. Is this true or false? My daughter & her family lived in the Pacific Palisades but, fortunately, they moved to New York last month. Their LA house is no more. Toast. She was sent a photograph by a former neighbour. Terrifying.

Wyllow3 well the Democrats were firmly in control of California so not sure how Trump will respond. He might be more of a pragmatist than the Democrats? I imagine Trump will want measures put in place to prevent further fires.

Democrats have ruined LA & Sanfrancisco. My friend went in July, she said SFC is full of homeless & shops have gone to the wall.

Musicgirl Sun 12-Jan-25 18:51:37

How terrible. I think many of us will know people from southern California even if, like me, it is through a Facebook group. Thankfully, the lady I know in this way is safe, but she can see the fires in the distance. So many well-known people have lost their homes, too. Whoever they are, whether known or unknown, rich or poor, it is a terrible situation and our hearts go out to them. I know there are several ladies from Australia here who know only too well what they are going through. šŸ’

this article might help, but the many fires didnt originate in one place

www.nbcnews.com/weather/wildfires/are-arsonists-responsible-los-angeles-wildfires-rcna186949

This was written by expert fire investigator as of course "cause" is under investigation.

Bea65 Sun 12-Jan-25 19:44:08

there are many questions why the fires started in so many different areas and spread quickly with the wind changes.
my sister-in-law says that although Cali is used to wildfires between the months of June and November this is unprecedented. This disaster started December and ongoing
She believes because much of the land is so scorched rainfall is low that fires just break out
Mother Nature is unstoppable when the wind changes despite all the best efforts of fire people and other services. You cannot underestimate the Santa Ana winds and other wind changes in California..
There will be many losses human and animal not yet known ATM due to this inferno and trauma for many …the air quality has never been great in OC - can’t imagine how the vulnerable, elderly and young children and disabled people are coping..šŸ™

I also feel for the fire fighters and their loved ones who must fear for their safety. What a terrifying job to have to do, knowing that all the time your life and the lives of your fellow firefighters are on the line. Trying to contain a fire that is uncontainable due to strong winds. And they are the ones who will have to search for human remains for the fires have gone.
Certainly will cause PTSD for some of them.
In my book they are the heroes whether they manage to contain the fires or not.

Babs03 Sun 12-Jan-25 22:33:27

Correction….they are the ones who will have to search for human remains after the fires have gone

Louella12 Sun 12-Jan-25 22:39:50

The pilots of the helicopters and planes that have been dropping water are just incredible.

Lots of clips on social media. Utmost skill and bravery.

madeleine45 Sun 12-Jan-25 22:51:22

this is so terrible for those having to escape the fire. The things that you dont think of now, but furniture can be replaced but your photos of your family and special little reminders of your family are the things that can never be replaced.
As for Trump, in these days of being able to join and compare film, there should always be one of the pictures of him denying that there is climate change etc , next to whatever lies and rubbish he is spouting now. His usual selfishness and denial of realities of life , showed him wanting to water golf courses etc. It does seem so strange that americans want to vote in as president a liar, cheat, and selfserving sexist moron who is a convicted criminal . I dont give much for their chances of getting help or leadership in this time when it is so needed. Well we pray that the wind drops and that it will rain to help things.

ronib Mon 13-Jan-25 04:02:29

Trump is the President Elect and is in the transition of power period. I imagine that Kamala Harris has authority to organise help and support for the rest of the week. The Inauguration is Monday is on Monday 20 January at 5 pm. Trump is not in a position to order help until then.

ronib Mon 13-Jan-25 04:03:50

Typo … is on Monday …

nanna8 Mon 13-Jan-25 05:21:04

The blame game is just unpleasant and unhelpful. Trump isn’t yet in power so leave it out. I actually think someone like him will be a better leader in a crisis than the Democrats.

vivaldi Australia must have a few tips on having firebreaks and clearing away wood and combustible materials… it really isn’t rocket science. And how about improving water storage? The Democrats have failed in California that’s for sure.

I may be wrong but thought that areas of Australia had been suffering drought or 3 years?

nanna8 Mon 13-Jan-25 07:26:19

Always droughts in parts of Australia. I laughed at the eucalyptus tree comments. Mostly when you build a new house there will be some pre existing eucalypts around. The councils don’t let you cut them down, they are protected. We have several but you have to get a permit to get rid of them and if they are healthy, as ours are, no permit is given. I suppose you could break the law and pay a fine but most of us would not.
They are indigenous to most areas of Australia, you certainly can’t cut them all down. Most fires ( over 90%) are started by humans not ā€˜nature’ .

Allsorts Mon 13-Jan-25 07:44:32

Its humbling, seeing those firefighters and helicopter pilots risking their lives. Shame in Trump for his usual spiteful comments. Also on Harry and Megan, who with their own camera crew visited some affected by the fires can they sink much lower. They must be in high alert for any photo opportunity. Immaculate as usual.

NotSpaghetti Mon 13-Jan-25 08:47:11

Was it really their own camera crew?
I read not. I read they had been helping (in masks) previously. That they had collected and brought in children's clothes etc.

I don't feel particularly warm to them but I think we should know what is truth and what is made-up.

I don't know where I read it.

NotSPAGHETTI Yes M&H were there 2days - the first day wasn’t publicly known they were distributing clothing etc and now some viscous people slating them on another thread ..awful comments …
Anyone who shows a little humanity or are
a humanitarian, others love to knock you down…sad society 😢

They always remind me of Wallis Simpson and the Duke.. him in her shadow.. I think they have completely lost their role in a similar way.. but maybe they are truly trying to help..
