Rosie 51 what do you think they make electricity with? Not all of it is wind power. Who knows what the imported electricity is made from?
Good Morning Wednesday 6th May 2026
Supporters of a 78yr old Bristol woman, recalled to prison because a Government contractor said they couldn’t find an electronic tag small enough for her wrist, are going to hold a silent, candlelit vigil [on Friday 10 Jan] outside the prison where she is being held.

Little sympathy. I think she was foolhardy joining in this protest, knowing the consequences, if she wasn’t happy to serve the penalty. It wasn’t as though ther was a chance of not getting caught.
🤣🤣🤣

Caleo I use gas to heat my smallish living quarters because I'd die without heating.
There are many forms of electric heating, both fixed appliances and portable ones, you don't have to use gas or oil. My parents lived in an all electric house in the West country, amazingly they didn't die. (Well they both did but not from lack of heating)
Can I suggest Caleo that you get together with neighbours and all spend a day in each other’s houses, thus using only one heater for all of you.
You know, a bit like a car share.
😳😬
Here are some suggestions, Caleo

If you live in Wales, I believe help is available for older people, such as financial help for installing heat source pumps etc

Each of us may feel that some aspects of the law are wrong. You may feel that the law regarding possession of cocaine, or tax evasion, or the taking of rare bird's eggs is wrong. Your stance on such matters does not give you a get- out- of - jail - free card( in this case literally), however deeply held your convictions, and however many others share them.
I understand this woman's perspective but she broke the law, and is subject to the consequences, as I would be, in the same situation,as another 70+ retired teacher.
Because she's really shown those oil companies!
They realise she means what she says, has the courage of her convictions, and... ooooh... wait a minute... has small wrists.

So, what has the small wristed woman encouraged her supporters to change?
What have we done as a direct result of her actions?
She has not influenced me in the slightest.
I have, however, made adjustments over the last few years.
I think she's trying to influence the oil companies. Like howling at the moon.
Erm … the polite answer is ‘nowt’.

Allira, there actually are people of all ages who attempt difficult physical feats that take extraordinary courage. I hope and pray I can do a comparable service when duty to the general good calls me to do so.
I use gas to heat my smallish living quarters because I'd die without heating. There are more sustainable ways to heat homes like mine but Big Oil is invested in sales and profits.
Big Oil is invested in profit before the general good. Also a great many people will not give up private cars because the damn things make life easier. Motor roads take up an inordinate space in urban areas largely because of private cars used for unnecessary journeys.
The political repercussions of the popular demand for the luxury of car ownership are such that Big Oil can count on political support.

Good heavens, who knew?!!
Every day's a school day on Gransnet!

We can all self-justify, you too it seems.
It’s not a lack of co-operative behaviour amongst villagers Caleo. If someone needs a doctor’s or hospital appointment they are told when the appointment will be. They can’t ask for an appointment slot to be held open whilst they check with neighbours if any of them need to visit the town at that time. You obviously don’t live in a small village without access to public transport and with no facilities other than the church and village hall and a postbox within walking distance. I shall continue to enjoy the use of my ‘luxury’, without guilt, and won’t be moving whilst I can drive. The same applies to my neighbours. We enjoy a quiet country life and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t. There are limits to the sacrifices and behaviours we are supposed to endure in order to save the planet.

Barleyfields, I am aware that there are a few extraordinarily expensive rural areas, However as a general rule , and like for like , rural housing ,where it's available at all, is cheaper than urban.
Many people would enjoy rural surroundings, views and so forth but must for practical reasons pay the higher property prices in the town.
Another myth.
Of course that would be dependent on area but generally, rural property prices are higher than those in urban areas.
I knew of a mature lady who was imprisoned as she did not pay her council tax. She lived in premises which used to be a shop. The council wanted to charge her more despite the shop had closed several years ago. Her argument was that a large hotel which had not traded for years and was empty was not obliged to pay any council tax so why should she ?
another person paid the fee and she was released but she was not at all happy . she wanted to stay inside the prison as a protest about the unfairness

Most of you are too young to have experienced wartime austerity when advertising slogans such as "Is Your Journey Really Necessary?" were part of daily life. Persons who did not comply with wartime austerity were called Spivs and worse. Such people were hated and feared.
It's not wartime for us at present The present enemy is not Nazism but human behaviour the environmental result of which can never be eradicated.
False equivalence again.
Yes, I remember spivs. They were not hated and feared but were despised by many who were abiding by the rules. Our neighbour was a spiv, obtaining goods on the black market and selling them for a profit, not feared but looked down on by law-abiding neighbours although I'm sure others must have occasionally obtained goods from him.
He did very nicely out of wartime.

👏👏👏👏 Caleo.Falling on deaf ears I am afraid. Will be too late when the consequences really hit, as if floods in this country weren’t enough warning, in addition to what is occurring in the rest of the world.
No.
You are being simplistic and using false equivalence.
Mmm, I’ve invariably found that those who are vociferous about what we should be doing, always having something in their own life that they are not prepared to give up.
Often they justify their own “thing” by saying that they do plenty else like recycling, or don’t own a car (but do rely on others for lifts) or that the thing they do is ok because it raises awareness.
I can’t think of one single person, even amongst protesters, that actually lives without oil in some form. Or who totally gives up their own wants for “the good of the planet.”
I don’t really accept their awareness raising arguments. Environmentally these protest increased the harm done without persuading anyone to change anything.
Barleyfields the lack of ability to organise cooperative behaviour among the villagers does not justify owning and using a private car.

PS contrary to what you think, prices of houses in this and other nearby villages are higher than in the nearest market town.
We don’t car share in our little village and I very much doubt there would be much interest in doing so. The chances of a few people here having a medical/optician’s/ whatever appointment at even a vaguely similar time is pretty remote.

Those women were just awful , tinaf1 Just insufferable.
They're not doing themselves any favours at all.
I just don’t get it either ,*Louella 12* they must know that there actions just annoy people, at the risk of sounding ageist I understand younger JSO supporters getting carried away and not understanding the consequences of their actions but what did they expect to achieve.
Barleyfields, in such cases it is usual for the local people to arrange a public transport system for themselves---car sharing for instance.
Your situation is similar in important ways to the closing of public libraries and local shops and pubs. The local people cooperate to do what they need without expecting the local authority to do it for them, which clearly LAs can't do.
I may remark that unavailability of public transport is one main reason that housing costs more in towns than it does in rural areas.
