Supporters of a 78yr old Bristol woman, recalled to prison because a Government contractor said they couldn’t find an electronic tag small enough for her wrist, are going to hold a silent, candlelit vigil [on Friday 10 Jan] outside the prison where she is being held.

So, if this person is allowed to waive her sentence, what actual difference will it make to any of the above points?

Farzanah Tue 14-Jan-25 13:25:02

👏👏👏👏 Caleo.Falling on deaf ears I am afraid. Will be too late when the consequences really hit, as if floods in this country weren’t enough warning, in addition to what is occurring in the rest of the world.

Car ownership isn’t a luxury where I live Caleo. There is no public transport, the nearest shop and the doctor are five miles away and the hospital over 25 miles.

Caleo Tue 14-Jan-25 13:20:50

Pascal and others of similar mind.

The problem will be solved if and when simplistic and unduly optimistic thinking is addressed and the problem is solved .

Protesters try to solve that problem of popular consciousness and conscience. I am not a professional opinion shaper but I am confidant that many such people who are unattached to commerce actually do exist. The church used to house the national conscience but this is no longer the case. It falls to individuals of good will to affect public behaviour.

Most of you are too young to have experienced wartime austerity when advertising slogans such as "Is Your Journey Really Necessary?" were part of daily life. Persons who did not comply with wartime austerity were called Spivs and worse. Such people were hated and feared.

It's not wartime for us at present The present enemy is not Nazism but human behaviour the environmental result of which can never be eradicated.

Allira, there actually are people of all ages who attempt difficult physical feats that take extraordinary courage. I hope and pray I can do a comparable service when duty to the general good calls me to do so.

I use gas to heat my smallish living quarters because I'd die without heating. There are more sustainable ways to heat homes like mine but Big Oil is invested in sales and profits.

Big Oil is invested in profit before the general good. Also a great many people will not give up private cars because the damn things make life easier. Motor roads take up an inordinate space in urban areas largely because of private cars used for unnecessary journeys.

The political repercussions of the popular demand for the luxury of car ownership are such that Big Oil can count on political support.

good post Caleo.. I completely agree with you..

Two JSO supporters have been arrested for spraying Charles Darwin’s grave with orange chalk paint in Westminster Abbey today. Both women in their seventies , although like every other sensible person I worry about climate change ( yes it is scary ) I cannot for the life of me see how these actions help JSO cause , it just alienates and disengages people .

A question for those who insist that a few missed appointments and inconveniences are just trivia compared with the bravery of JSO protestors........do you have any comment on those relatives of the ones jailed for conspiracy who anguished that one would miss her daughter's wedding and another would miss her brother's wedding? Apparently those missed events were going to be heartbreaking. You'd have thought they'd be saying how the sacrifice was worth it to save the planet and raise awareness, or at least I would. Or is it a case of OK for thee but not for me?

I remember those two whingers.

That's the price they have to pay because they chose to do that.
Others who might have died because of their actions did not have that choice.

I suggest they take environmentally friendly journeys to the USA, India, Russia and China to protest in those countries.

Babs, thank God for "silly old buggers" who risk all to demonstrate against far greater evils than people missing appointments, and so forth!

This woman is in jail because the oil lobby is strong enough to enforce her imprisonment.

People dying on their own, cancer appointments missed, and goodness knows what other disasters they caused. Glad she's in jail, and she can serve her time. Won't wear a tag, she's is to blame for that also.

Allira Tue 14-Jan-25 00:25:22

There are so many wonderful, intelligent people who are conservationists, environmentalists and concerned for the future of our planet who are working tirelessly and without fanfare.

This woman and her group are just disruptive attention seekers and do nothing constructive; their actions are counter-productive

Allira Tue 14-Jan-25 00:16:30

Does no one understand that?

Why would you say that?
Do you think disrupting and antagonising the public is the right way to win them over to their cause?
Childishly throwing orange paint around even on a sustainable garden?

Working in a grownup way might work, not stopping people visiting dying relatives, stopping people getting to vital appointments, key workers getting to work and generally acting like three year olds having tantrums and breaking the law.

Beeches Tue 14-Jan-25 00:13:04

I’ll spell it out, it means (in our country, our lifetime): food and gas prices through the roof, floods, boiling heat waves, melting roads, failing infrastructure, endless migration, uninhabitable housing, contaminated water, no water, power cuts… that’s the future but also starting to happen now (see LA fires)

Beeches Tue 14-Jan-25 00:10:30

Frankly extraordinary disconnect between the final hour of life on this planet as we know it, and extreme lack of interest in the crisis which is the end of civilised life on Earth. Does no one understand that? Maybe people prefer to pretend it’s not happening, I don’t know

Allira Tue 14-Jan-25 00:00:29

I'm presuming she has another leg.
As she managed to climb a motorway gantry.
Not something I'd attempt.

Nobody else with a medical condition has ever broken the law then, presumably?
No under 16s?
Nobody with an eating disorder?

I would be most interested to know what this medical condition is.

Apparently she has a DVT in her leg for which she will get treatment in prison anyway.
(Discussed a bit earlier in the thread 🙂)

I'm presuming she has another leg.
And two very tiny wrists.

Beeches Mon 13-Jan-25 23:31:54

She has a medical condition meant the tag wouldn’t fit, she’s highly intelligent and she also knows non invasive peaceful protest has completely failed. It’s disgraceful she’s in prison, the world’s on fire and people are clueless as to how bad it’s going to get. We’ve already passed the minimum global warming limit so let’s see how she’s judged 10, 20 years from now when our children’s planet is in melt down

This woman broke the law, alot of people were inconvenienced, and upset by what her and the other protesters did.
I care about climate change and try to do my bit like recycling and not buying more than I need too, but I do not break the law.
I do not endorse, support, or condone what this woman has done, she is, in my opinion, exactly where she should be.

I agree.

This woman is in jail because the oil lobby is strong enough to enforce her imprisonment.

And how exactly did they do that?
The CJS is responsible for justice in this country.

She is in prison because she was found guilty of a criminal offence, the maximum sentence for which is 10 years imprisonment.

Allira Mon 13-Jan-25 23:11:14

I'd suggest that if someone wholeheartedly believes in their cause, they'd be prepared to go to prison for it.
Not try and pull the "I'm just a frail little old lady" card to try and get around it.

👏👏👏
In a nutshell!

Yes indeed Caleo. The power doesn’t lie with “silly old buggers” at all but with those who are making huge profits helping to poison the planet.

I assume you don’t rely on oil or gas to heat your home because no alternative is available and that you’re not dependent on a petrol or diesel fuelled car because you don’t have access to public transport?
