78yr old woman is in prison through no fault of hers
(211 Posts)Supporters of a 78yr old Bristol woman, recalled to prison because a Government contractor said they couldn’t find an electronic tag small enough for her wrist, are going to hold a silent, candlelit vigil [on Friday 10 Jan] outside the prison where she is being held.

I am not saying this woman is without blame, I am saying that the way this is being handled is unfair. We can argue over the reasons why, and if I had missed a flight etc., I’d be fuming, but this is a 78 year old woman who’s wrists are too thin to wear a tag - though I find it hard to believe the tag can’t be adjusted - so has gone to prison. If I were a member if her family I would probably read her the riot act gif being a silly old bugger but I would also be demanding that the authorities find a suitable tag and release her from prison.

At the Labour Party Conference last year a plan was announced to reduce the women’s prison population, even closing some women’s prisons through the establishment of a Woman’s Justice Board. It was acknowledged that prison isn’t working for women.
Only around a third of females sentenced to custody have committed a violent offence, and alternatives to women’s custodial sentences are being sought such as community sentences and residential women’s centres.
Surely the reason to keep someone in prison is if they are a risk to the public, not for punishment, because it just doesn’t work. A properly funded support and rehabilitation system would be much better and society would benefit. There is no benefit from sending this person back to prison. It just creates headlines and a martyr for her cause, although a very worthwhile one imo.Agree totally.
I mean people might feel irritated by this woman and her actions but nobody was harmed though some were greatly inconvenienced.
Not a reason to imprison her.
A police officer was badly injured.
People were unable to make flights, hospital appointments, work engagements etc.
Freight drivers who come from Europe can drive for only a limited number of hours so their journeys could take many hours longer.
Importantly hundreds of Police were deployed at huge expense to the tax payer.
This woman and her cronies deserved their sentences.
You don't think it's fair, but I do.

She broke the law.
Reason enough, if, as she claims, she is unable to be released with a tag.
Many people break the law but are not sentenced to prison for it. There are many who pay fines, do community service, serve a suspended sentence with certain conditions like wearing a tag etc., some are simply issued with a warning for a minor misdemeanour and no previous form.
I imagine the idea is to make an example of this woman but I don’t think it is fair.

You think the retired school teacher needs rehabilitation?

^My husband used to have to qualify in first aid as a police officer. He always used to say, "is this the year we apply a tourniquet or do we let them bleed to death." He swore it changed every time he did a course.^
Same here with our childminding first aid courses!
The most confusing one was when a certain rule was being changed a month after the course.
"I've got to teach you this way, but next month it'll be a different way so you might want to bear that in mind..." 😵💫
If it wasn't so crazy I'd have to laugh.
Most men and society do not benefit from going to prison, but we still imprison them.
This woman is an older, well educated, and stable woman who quite consciously decided to break the law to push a cause that she supported. She consciously and knowingly broke the law knowing what the consequences would be.
I an think of no one more suitable for the punishment she was justly sent down for.
What is the point of putting this woman in prison? They are over crowded, it will be expensive. and I don’t believe most women or society benefits from them being incarcerated anyway.
It is called Punishment: commonly the imposition of an undesirable or unpleasant outcome upon an individual or group, meted out by an authority, as a deterrent to a particular action or behavior that is deemed undesirable.

Anybody that blocked motorways and roads which stopped people going to work, hospital, funerals holidays, school and other appointments should all face jail. It was ridiculous that they were allowed to do this.

I'm not sure that women's prisons are overcrowded.

She was in prison, then allowed out on early release, she hasn't just been put in prison.
She has been returned because she did not comply with the conditions of early release.
She has at least another 15 months of her sentence to complete one way or another.

Treatment for a DVT isn’t usually pressure stockings, they’re preventative on long flights etc. Blood thinners are prescribed, so I don’t really understand the issue.
My mother was prescribed pressure stockings for thrombosis. She always wore one.
Perhaps the medical advice has changed recently.
Maybe it is one of those changeable things. My husband used to have to qualify in first aid as a police officer. He always used to say, "is this the year we apply a tourniquet or do we let them bleed to death." He swore it changed every time he did a course. I don't think they actually suggested you let people bleed to death, that was more his take on the advice.

I can't quite believe the strength of feeling and anger on this, so far 4 page, thread, against this one person who happens to be a 77 yr old woman.
What's the matter with you all?
Why so much unkindness?
You'd probably be braying for the worst punishment for the Suffragettes, if you had happened to be around 100 years ago.
She set out to be a martyr for her cause, maybe she doesn't like it now she knows what it is like. Actions have consequences.
Actually I think the suffragettes are overrated. I think the peaceful suffragists were more to be admired. In the end I think the first world war did more to secure votes for women than either group. I would expect Ms Delap to disapprove of the violent actions of the suffragettes as she is a Quaker according to what I've read. After the work women did during the war it was impossible to ignore them.
I wouldn't be braying for anything though, I'm not a donkey and it seems an unpleasant accusation to make against people who simply don't agree with you.

That is a very misleading heading.

Do none of you think about your grandchildren and climate change.. this woman is being supported by the Quakers because they think what she did was morally correct..
Yes, we do, which is why I and others support every practical move to reduce the use of fossil fuels and encourage the development of alternatives.
But what has what this lady did got to do with dealing with climate change. Everybody knows about it so what she did was pointless and irrelevant and probably led to an increased consumption of the fuels she claims she wants to cut. More virute signalling than practical action.
Hear hear, M0nica
Because we think someone who caused such disruption to the lives of others should complete the sentence handed down to her, whether that be in prison or out on licence with a tag does not make us climate change deniers.
Nor does it mean we are not concerned about the future of the planet and all humankind, not just our own families.
However, perhaps the Stop Oil protestors and Quakers should travel to China, India, USA (by the least polluting means possible) and protest in those countries.
At 77 old enough to know what she was doing,
Nothing the matter with me.
I'm not being remotely unkind.
I just find the actions of these protesters hugely annoying. And I'm always pleased if they get prison sentences.
