Hamas is the governing body in Gaza

In the absence of the ability to run free and fair elections though. Hamas and PLO refused to allow them. So I don’t see them as a legitimate governing body.

The thread got deleted because the pro israel govt lobby was being criticised

Are you sure that was the case, only that seems like censorship and does not seem to fit with the spirit of GN?

CBS

“The agreement is not set to take effect until Sunday, and with Israel's military increasing attacks in Gaza rather than easing them in the wake of the deal — and none of the roughly 100 hostages expected to come home for several days — nobody who spoke with CBS News on either side of the border seemed ready to take for granted the peace looming tantalizingly just over the horizon.”

(There was a delay in Israel’s final approval)

“Israeli media reports suggested the delay was likely down to Netanyahu trying to buy time to deal with nationalist hardliners in his cabinet who've always fiercely opposed any agreement with Hamas.”

Just as Hamas is a faction in Palestine so are the far right a faction in Israel.

Aid trucks are queueing at the border awaiting the vote.

Whitewavemark The period between the announcement and the commencement of the ceasefire on the Israeli/Lebanese border was marked by the heaviest rocket fire from both side. Then the hour of the ceasefire arrived and everything stopped, and it has been fairly quiet since. Of course it would be best if all hostilities stopped straight away but I very much hope for a similar occurrence on Sunday. Keeping hopeful and positive here.

Very difficult listening to the continuing violence today.

What a mess.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 16-Jan-25 13:12:53

Has the Israeli government lost control over its army or did it never intend to keep to the temporary peace agreement.

Doesn’t it care about the hostages?

If I was an Israeli I would be in despair.

Hamas governs health ministry

Wyllow3 Thu 16-Jan-25 12:23:58

My heart sank last night when I read about more attacks.

I so hope there will be a cease fire, and that current celebrations in both Gaza and Israel are not wiped out.

Live reporting on the BBC feed www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c3rwqpj70ert

summary

"The health ministry in Gaza says dozens of Palestinians have been killed by Israeli strikes ahead of a ceasefire deal between Hamas and Israel coming into force
Meanwhile, Israel has accused Hamas of backtracking on the agreement, with a planned cabinet vote on the deal pushed back
Hamas says it is committed to a deal, but the BBC's Rushdi Abualouf hears the group is attempting a last-minute push for the release of one or two symbolic prisoners from its movement"

read 11.43am"a hitch to the deal?

There is a thread titled Biden's last hoorah?

Yes I know, but the thread I’m talking about had an O/P that talked about the agreement. I can’t remember the poster.

The agreement is a phased withdrawl in the east and north, women and the injured or sick hostages first, in return for several thousand Palestinian prisoners. The security zone on the Egyptian border stays

Recovering hostages is a big issue in Israel so I would expect them to show restraint.

Like killing dozens more in Gaza last night?

Oreo

Am not surprised at all and the reason it’s not around is far from unfathomable.

What was the reason?

Oreo Thu 16-Jan-25 11:52:39

The agreement will last if both sides abide by the rules set for them.

I was bewildered by the removal of the thread also..

Although I would love to see Gaza become a separate, self governing, free state I don't think Israel will allow that to happen.. much less assist in the enormous rebuilding...

So I don't think this agreement will last..

The agreement may or may not last but that’s another matter about Gaza being a free state! Given what hamas did it will never be a free state or hamas allowed to run anything more than a bread stall.

merlotgran Thu 16-Jan-25 11:16:08

It will last as long as it lasts,

Precisely!

David49 Thu 16-Jan-25 11:11:03

It will last as long as it lasts, one side will break it the other will respond and each will blame the other.

Hamas is beleaguered now it has lost much of its active support but it’s not likely to be able to control its own extremists, Israel will respond.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 16-Jan-25 11:06:05

I’ve started this thread because for some unfathomable reason the one discussing the latest agreement has disappeared.

An important subject for all concerned, and too important to ignore.

So as you were folks.
