“Speaking in the Oval Office, the US President told Fox News Ukraine's President Volodomyr Zelensky was "no angel" and added he "shouldn't have allowed this war to happen.“

This is scary stuff! What on earth did Trump think Zelenskyy should have done? Just handed Ukraine across to Putin? What planet is this man on?

I agree David, it is heartbreaking but I dont see what other way there will be.

I think the British should get out of Ireland, too.

Maybe not?
Putin invaded a sovereign country. That truth stands clear alone.
Ukraine will be forced to compromise when it did nothing wrong.

As a weaker country, even with help, Ukraine will be forced to compromise when, as you say, it’s done nothing wrong, but that’s life sometimes.
It’s better surely than this war rumbling on.It still means that Putin won’t actually win even if he accepts a face saving deal.

According to google over 800 Russian soldiers and over 100 Ukrainian soldiers are being killed EVERY day..
It's an unbelievable waste of young lives..

ronib Sat 25-Jan-25 09:16:57

Cossy I wouldn’t be happy for my sons to die on the battlefields of Ukraine. It is a completely senseless war.
Of course we need young people to defend our country. That’s not in doubt.

At the moment, our government is not offering soldiers but £3 billion a year for the next 100 years so that other nations can have their military engaged/killed.

David49 Sat 25-Jan-25 09:13:21

The real story is that Trump does not intend to continue funding Ukraine, I don’t see Europe uniting and replacing that money.
There is no chance whatever that the lost territory is going to be retaken by Ukraine, the sensible choice for the fighting to stop and accept the lost land, however unpalatable that is.

keepingquiet have you waved off your sons to fight in war?

What does that have to do with the issue??

We don’t have conscription in the UK. I have two friends with sons in the army, they are following in both their Dad’s footsteps and know full well what they are signing up for.

By Russia you mean Putin? He is Russia.

ronib Sat 25-Jan-25 08:19:15

My husband has just explained to me the way the oil futures market works will have an immediate impact on oil prices following Trump’s drilling statements. So that might be a good enough lever to engage Russia?

If Trump can stop this war who are we to criticise him? Many lives will be saved. Just because you find the man abhorrent doesn’t mean he can’t do some good in the world. I agree with ronib

You are in favour of capitulation then? You believe anyone can just invade another country and get away with it?
Stop. You don't need to answer that question... Canada? Greenland? Why not...?

If a sovereign country decides to increase its energy production, it must be a commercial, stand alone decision. Becoming rich through oil revenue won’t be a lever for USA against Russia over Ukraine any time soon. It will take time to organise.
What bothers me most is the wilful destruction of the lives of so many young soldiers whether from Ukraine, Russia or North Korea.

Aveline Sat 25-Jan-25 06:48:39

I think it is.

If Americans do 'drill baby drill' the international price of oil will plummet. That will be a major setback for Russia. Good.

Maybe thats the threat.

Maybe, maybe not, but regardless I think both sides now want out without too much loss of face.

keepingquiet Fri 24-Jan-25 19:52:46

The thumb screws are only for Zelensky to give in to Putin...

Oreo Fri 24-Jan-25 17:52:14

I think from what I read that DT is tightening the thumbscrews on both leaders to end the war there. Both leaders may be secretly glad of it as it’s one of those wars that could drag on for ages with neither side winning.

The last thing I saw (yesterday) was that Trump was tgreatening Putin with tariffs if he didn’t stop the war.

Not that that is much of a threat. Trump doesn’t seem to understand that it’s the importer who pays the tariff, not the country exporting to them. It might reduce imports slightly, but the main effect would be to make imports more expensive for Americans.

However, it’s a Trump threat, implying that he doesn’t support Putin in continuing the conflict.

keepingquiet Fri 24-Jan-25 17:06:15

I thought that Trump was going to end the war on his first day in office?

He's a few days late but I'm not holding my breath...

Rosie51 Fri 24-Jan-25 16:59:11

I'll assume that USA won't be sending any help to Ukraine in future. Putin will be pleased.

AGAA4 Fri 24-Jan-25 16:52:41

That sounds very pro Putin.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-Jan-25 16:40:06

Trump is re-writing history.
