I.C.E attempts raid on elementary school in Chicago

I have never started a thread before but I find this attempted raid on an elementary school in Chicago today beyond appalling . I have family that are teachers in the USA . Now teachers not only need to defend their students against gunmen but their own government as well . I don’t do it as often as I should but I will write my Congressman and Senator . This is disgusting and unacceptable !

At the moment hysterical accounts are everywhere unfortunately and nowhere more than on SM where posters fire off complete fabrications which spread like Chinese Whispers

Oreo thank you so much for acknowledging my attempt to explain that last night’s comments on GN, regarding the school incident, were specifically not based on “Chinese whispers”!

So magnanimous of you!

I suspect Oreo was referring to me be being hysterical and passing along information I got off social media like Chinese Whispers. Someone on another thread mentioned I am shrill.

Except none of what I posted is false. This is all really happening in the US. Even this original story was reported in reputable news sources, not social media.

I am going to keep posting. Because it is very serious when people start losing rights. People in the US are scared. It needs to be shared. If someone disagrees with what I post, I hope they use thier free will to stop reading my posts and find something more pleasing to them.

I’m grateful to you for keeping us up to speed with what is happening in your country. I can’t imagine what it must feel like to live in a country controlled by such an awful person.

Syracute, it's always worth contacting your Political representatives. Remind them that you will be voting again in 2 years.

Yes, I will ! They are Democrats but I will just to emphasise my disgust on what is going on .

David49 Sun 26-Jan-25 16:13:27

They are there illegally, ie a person who has done something illegal. Human beings cant be "illegal' per se.
Semantics, they entered another country illegally, of course they have committed a crime, in the case of the US the worst that is going to happen is free transport back to their homeland, usually Mexico, which is a safe country.

This is exactly what the UK does with Albanians that come to the UK illegally.

Should we still be using the phrase 'Chinese whispers'?
MOnica, that was a bit harsh? Not at all in the spirit of Gransnet. Sounded a bit like Girnsnet.

Wyllow3 Sun 26-Jan-25 11:59:21

I think you know very well what I have in mind when I talk about dehumanising and sometimes pejorative terms.

They are there illegally, ie a person who has done something illegal. Human beings cant be "illegal' per se.

David49 Sun 26-Jan-25 11:43:40

They are illegal, if I overstay my US visa I get arrested and put on a flight straight back home, I have broken the law so I am an illegal alien.

End of .

Wyllow3 Sun 26-Jan-25 11:23:30

People are not "illegals". It's a dehumanising and inaccurate label adopted from the states, and even over there "undocumented" more accurately describes the situation. Over here we have a mixture of situations and its best to be specific not make sweeping generalisations - refugees, asylum seekers, people who have overstayed visas, and so on.

David49 Sun 26-Jan-25 09:54:30

Bounty Hunters, the police pay informers here, but there really isn’t any point informing on illegals in the UK, they just get bailed and disappear. Enforcement is very poor

Oreo Sun 26-Jan-25 08:50:48

The OP could now get the moderators to amend the title on here.

Oreo Sun 26-Jan-25 08:49:22

I don’t believe everything on CNN or Fox but be that as it may many forums are awash with false info posing as real news.

Your attempt at sarcasm was indeed lost on me as I hadn’t read your previous posts on GN.

LizzieDrip Sun 26-Jan-25 00:03:38

My comment was a general one about information on SM being believed and passed on quickly before it’s verified

Oreo but this is the point I, Wyllow and imaround are making - the information about the school event was verified before posting. When further detail emerged, that was also posted to clarify the situation.

My attempt at sarcasm (11.22 post) was obviously lost on Oreo.

Worth also posting on the summary of Trump events thread too?

quote from your reference

"Mississippi DA bill would pay bounty hunters a reward to help facilitate deportation of illegal immigrants
If passed, the legislation would create the Illegal Alien Certified Bounty Hunter Program"

Horrifying prospect, jobs for the racist supremicist groups who hate already.

imaround Sat 25-Jan-25 23:12:55

2 states are working at creating a bounty hunting program for migrants.

But that didn't happen here. The original info as said came from the post reliable sources we could rely on like CNN nd other MSM.

And as soon as breaking news came out with correct info I immediately posted it.

This is different from O/P's with no sources given at all and often "I read somewhere" or " heard that", when no checking has been done and no effort to correct misinformation or checking it out.

Oreo Sat 25-Jan-25 22:31:32

I haven’t the faintest notion what you’re talking about.

We do, it is very clear.

Poor teachers who have many children from an immigrant background, some legal, some without documentation, all of them from families facing so many difficulties and now this.

They will be required to release so students to the immigration police. Same as in the late 30s. Sickening.

Syracute Sat 25-Jan-25 15:32:03

It was 100 percent reported by all news sources since I always check . The misunderstanding was caused by the secret service themselves as their ID said Homeland Services which in the context the school authorities construed as ICE . They turned these gentleman away . The school authorities then made the announcement presuming these men were ICE . That is how this came to be a reputable report on many news stations . It is still extremely tragic that a school in the USA had to be prepared not only to protect their students against gun violence but also against their own government . This is the state of schools now in the USA . That is a fact .
I corrected myself when reports corrected themselves . To what use do you send Secret Service to an elementary school ?? They frightened the whole school with this ridiculous approach concerning an 11 year old child.
Meanwhile , 3 US citizens were detained in an ICE raid . One a military vet who was doubted when he said he was a veteran . This is where we are in the USA now . I recommend you listen to the mayor in New Jersey who spoke on this subject .

Oreo

That’s the trouble with SM, posters get indignant from the off when they’re writing stuff that’s not even true, like the OP here.

I think many are “guilty” of that, especially if they read right-wing press.

Why ‘especially’ those, it can be anyone, forums are full of it and the OP rarely apologises when caught out.

Oreo Sat 25-Jan-25 11:17:47

Thats why I very quickly checked it out Oreo", critiques *have to be accurate.

However it did raise valid points and some insight as to the realities of what ICE officials can actually do when they sweep into farms, construction sites, institutions. and possible resistance.

Why shouldn’t they when looking for illegal immigrants ?In the US who knows what violence they may face from the places they raid, it’s potentially a dangerous job.

We had the UK equivalent raid multiple establishments round here, car washes, Indian & Turkish restaurants, Chinese takeaways and Turkish Barbers.

They detained multiple people who didn’t have the correct paperwork and were working illegally. The employers were all fined.

Why should anyone be allowed to work under the radar not paying tax and NI.

There’s nothing wrong with ICE officials doing their jobs.
