Thats why I very quickly checked it out Oreo", critiques *have to be accurate.

However it did raise valid points and some insight as to the realities of what ICE officials can actually do when they sweep into farms, construction sites, institutions. and possible resistance.

We had the UK equivalent raid multiple establishments round here, car washes, Indian & Turkish restaurants, Chinese takeaways and Turkish Barbers.

They detained multiple people who didn’t have the correct paperwork and were working illegally. The employers were all fined.

Why should anyone be allowed to work under the radar not paying tax and NI.

I agree about the danger of firing stuff off ‘in a frenzy’ on SM without verification.

However, the story about ICE agents was reported by many reputable media outlets last night - CNN, Fox News, ABC news etc.

I checked online because, on first hearing, I found it hard to believe. There was a report by the Independent about it last night, which I linked on another thread.

So, I don’t think the OP started this thread in ‘indignation’ - it was started based on available reputable news information at the time.

Of course, more detail has emerged this morning which clarifies the situation, which those of us commenting last night having acknowledged.

I do think that the way the event became misunderstood so quickly is symptomatic of the fear and panic currently being felt by the American Hispanic community.

Oreo

That’s the trouble with SM, posters get indignant from the off when they’re writing stuff that’s not even true, like the OP here.

I think many are “guilty” of that, especially if they read right-wing press.

I don't think it matters where a GN poster is when she/he posts?

I'm glad to hear about the school district policies.

Ok that makes more sense.

There was a fire started at an office recently in regards to the Tik Tik ban. Thanks for clarifying this. I am at am event and can't pull up the videos posted.

If you are at an event, why are you on Gransnet? Nothing on here is so interesting that it should take prcedence over any engagement you are attending.

I am reading on the teacher subreddit and am seeing reports that a lot of school districts are putting out policies that they won't comply without a federal warrant.

This is wonderful news! These children deserve to learn in an environment that is as stress free as possible.

Yes, it was not I.C.E. , it was the Secret Service . Maybe, they should have called first .
Still it is extremely sad that teachers do have to be prepared for such an event . That it is even a possibility .

What was good (its obvious in the video) was the determination of the school staff to back their students, their feelings were pretty clear!

Wasn't a bomb threat. Something weird

"A spokesperson for the Secret Service said the agency "was investigating a threat to one of our protectees in reference to the recent TikTok ban"

Wyllow3 Sat 25-Jan-25 00:11:31

Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

ICE = immigration

I am so relieved to hear this was the Secret service. However, I have no idea why the SS would be investigating a bomb threat. That seems strange. But nothing makes sense right now.

welbeck Sat 25-Jan-25 00:05:56

What is ICE ?

There's a news development on this just 40 mins old:
Secret service agents give a different story: they had turned up

" U.S. Secret Service agents were investigating a threat linked to the TikTok ban". (At a school?)

Good for those teachers. Either taking them or using them as pawns to get the parents or family.

Syracute Fri 24-Jan-25 23:36:13

I have never started a thread before but I find this attempted raid on an elementary school in Chicago today beyond appalling . I have family that are teachers in the USA . Now teachers not only need to defend their students against gunmen but their own government as well . I don’t do it as often as I should but I will write my Congressman and Senator . This is disgusting and unacceptable !
