What is it with men? Some men, perhaps, but TOO MANY

Wynne Evans has stepped away from his BBC radio programme after making an “inappropriate and unacceptable” remark towards a Strictly Come Dancing presenter
Evans, the opera singer and star of the Go Compare adverts, was caught on camera appearing to use the term “spit roast” in reference to Janette Manrara, who is hosting the Strictly live tour.
The incident happened during a photocall for the tour in Birmingham, as Ms Manrara stood between Evans and Jamie Borthwick, another Strictly contestant. Borthwick did not take part in the exchange
I am proud to say it would not have occurred to DH or indeed any men in my family to use that sort of language.
D1 and GD (10) went to the Strictly Live show 10 days ago, with friends, also with a 10 year old daughter.
GD loved it but if she had caught any of the interview what on earth could we have said to her?

Never heard of it. I hate all this”woke” nonsense.

I don't think what the Go Compare bloke supposedly said was remotely
'Woke' MountainAsh! 😶

It begins to look like, no, they will never learn.
We learned from the exploitation of Hollywood women like Marilyn Monroe, Betty Davies etc etc. then from Me2. Then we see this gross behaviour and speech. Then we look at PDiddy

Indeed.

I didn't look it up, I've no desire to read the definition.

People should always challenge "locker room banter" as unacceptable.

yellowfox Thu 30-Jan-25 10:30:42

Just looked it up. It's absolutely vile.
Never want to hear of the man again.

Had tolook the phrase up. Absolutely disgusting. He obviously thought it that he said it. Don't know how old his children are but hope they don't have to deal with the fallout.

Thank goodness times are changing, WOKE or not, new generations are being taught that there is now a consequence to inappropriate behaviour and it will not be tolerated. You only have to look back at 1970's TV shows where women were sex objects scantily dressed paraded around even on family shows , no wonder so many men now behave like they do. BUT looking forward, by changing attitudes and punishing and publicly recognising this bad behaviour we are now teaching the next generation to treat everyone with respect.

Absolutely. I rewatched a very old episode of 'The Two Ronnies' recently and I was surprised at the level of casual sexism in what was a family show. This is just one example.

It seems to be taking some older men a while for it to sink in that what was seen as acceptable when they were younger is no longer OK. How many more celebs are going to overstep the mark before the penny drops?

I had to look it up cos my DH was no help either. As well as disgusting, in my opinion the use of it seems rather juvenile - the sort of phrase a teenager might use and giggle about with his mates before he learns that it isn't appropriate. 50-plus years ago I worked with a young chap who used to make all sorts of lewd comments to his women colleagues and thought it was hilarious. It took me, a shy 19-year-old, to tell him he was insulting them and he was horrified - it had not crossed his mind that they would be offended.

We are still mates.

No idea what he said but do they never learn?

Can I respectfully suggest you look this up?
It’s been front page news today and a major news story even before that.

Ugh!!!! Disgusting! Had to google it. I am obviously naive. Thank goodness.

Flakesdayout Wed 29-Jan-25 18:10:43

I had never heard of it until. many years ago whilst working in a well known restaurant chain, two male customers ordered spit roast chicken in fits of giggles and laughter. I hadn't got a clue what they were talking about and put the order through. A colleague enlightened me.
Yes it a disgusting term and I really do not understand why some men think it is acceptable and funny.

Angiewub Wed 29-Jan-25 17:50:25

Agreed - what on earth has woke got to do with it?! Decent and basic human standards surely mean more. Shame on you

nightowl Wed 29-Jan-25 17:44:22

I think more men hate women than we realise. And I suspect many men use horrible derogatory terms about women when not in our company.

mabon1 Wed 29-Jan-25 17:39:53

Never heard the term. What's the matter with him, clearly thinks he is invincible. he's already had a yellow card.

Crazygrandma60 Wed 29-Jan-25 16:35:14

OMG, wish I hadn't looked it up now!!

Nightsky2 Wed 29-Jan-25 15:40:54

Another who had to look it up and I thought I’d heard most things.

How humiliating for J Manrara. What a horrible repulsive and crude man Evans is.

AuntieE Wed 29-Jan-25 15:39:42

I too am happy to say I do not know any men who would have used such a disgusting term.

Unfortunately, standards have slipped in our lifetime and today many people do use extremely crude language in public.

At least now others are pointing out how disgusting this kind of thing is, which I regard as a step in the right direction. For years, practically since 1970, anyone who complained about coarse or obscene language in print or on radio, television or the stage was just told not to be so old-fashioned and prudish.

grannybuy Wed 29-Jan-25 15:12:16

I've not heard of it either. I can't understand why some of these men think that females would give them a second look. Inflated egos obviously. I hope he takes a long hard look at himself - and doesn't like what he sees.

wibblywobblywobblebottom Wed 29-Jan-25 14:39:17

I've actually indulged in spit roasting. Chicken. Woke comes from a song by Leadbelly where he is telling black people to awaken and see the racism all around them. Woke is a term that has been appropriated by crazy people.

TiggyW Wed 29-Jan-25 14:18:15

He should take a look at himself in the mirror. 🤮

Smileless2012

Unless his mental health problems result in him not knowing or caring what is and is not appropriate, I don't understand the relevance.

agree

I had to look the term up. I’ve not heard that sort of things for the many decades, since I parted from a Welsh fellow who played rugby. These sort of phrases would not have been repeated in the company of ladies, but I did learn a few things that would make your hair curl.
I’m sure they things are different now (?) but who knows with mr Evans coming out with this.

NannieChicken Wed 29-Jan-25 14:01:57

I've never heard of this expression and had to ask my husband to explain.
I wonder if this rude man ever stopped to consider the upset this kind of comment caused Jeanette.
He should be ashamed of himself.
