Wynne Evans has stepped away from his BBC radio programme after making an “inappropriate and unacceptable” remark towards a Strictly Come Dancing presenter
Evans, the opera singer and star of the Go Compare adverts, was caught on camera appearing to use the term “spit roast” in reference to Janette Manrara, who is hosting the Strictly live tour.
The incident happened during a photocall for the tour in Birmingham, as Ms Manrara stood between Evans and Jamie Borthwick, another Strictly contestant. Borthwick did not take part in the exchange
I am proud to say it would not have occurred to DH or indeed any men in my family to use that sort of language.
D1 and GD (10) went to the Strictly Live show 10 days ago, with friends, also with a 10 year old daughter.
GD loved it but if she had caught any of the interview what on earth could we have said to her?

Never heard of it before, but what a very stupid man he is. Hes overweight, over bloated ego, and thinks he’s hilariously funny. . .

merlotgran Tue 28-Jan-25 08:17:56

What a crude and nasty term to use, gutter brain, I bet he won’t use it again

I wouldn’t bet on it. The man clearly has no filter.

I just think some men feel entitled to say what they want, it all comes back to the old freedom of speech argument, or the WOKE accusation, with some men believing they are being penalised for not being able to say or do as they wish, even though they are quite openly being misogynistic.the same goes for those who make racist remarks when discussing immigration. They also tend to take the high ground saying there is no freedom of speech.
I think some just want the freedom to insult, offend, and denigrate others without blame.
And if I am WOKE for saying this, though goodness knows what that actually means, then so be it.

I had only heard the term in reference to cooking. I looked it up and that what came up, how to cook meat. Looking at your posts I’ve drawn my own conclusions.
I worry about what our impressionable youngsters are watching, see to much porn and I guess you become desensitised. I have never watched any and don't want to, prefer a gardening programme or interesting.
These stupid men giving up a profitable tv career and losing any reputation they had, for what. Do they think they sound man of the world or just a grubb aging man with insecurities. Thank goodness there's more decent people,

BlueBelle Tue 28-Jan-25 07:43:15

Strangely enough on social media he has a huge amount of support everyone saying things like ‘can't say anything these days’ ‘leave him alone’ ‘stop putting him down nothing wrong with him’ ‘blooming woke’ and a number of these when read in context are obviously from older people as well as young

M0nica Tue 28-Jan-25 07:26:08

I recognised the term and know what it means.

However, wherever I picked that knowledge up, and I cannot remember where or when, it absolutely did not come from any man in my family.

I must say, like others, I cannot understand, given the current attitude to gross sexual banter and touching, why these men, like Davies and Wallace consciously throw their whole lucrative away, to make these unpleasant remarks.

Ashcombe Tue 28-Jan-25 07:23:58

BlueBelle: A few years ago, I had a similar reaction from my DS and DSiL when I happened to say in conversation: “Doesn’t every home have a gloryhole?”

Such a shame that a very apt word, in its original usage, now has other connotations. Equally, I was unaware of the unsavoury interpretation of spit roast until I read this thread.

Thepanaramawoman Tue 28-Jan-25 07:22:51

I’ve heard it once many years ago, a male colleague having “banter” with me in the work place.

Galaxy Tue 28-Jan-25 07:22:04

Yes it is 'porn' language.

Sarnia Tue 28-Jan-25 07:21:03

He seemed an unpleasant character on Strictly. His partner didn't seem very comfortable with the way he held on to her and remarks made. Allowing him to be a part of the Strictly tour gives out the wrong message. He can say sorry all he likes but he is one of those men who think it acceptable to demean women.
The thought of being in a spit roast with him!!! I'll leave my breakfast till later. Urgh!

David49 Tue 28-Jan-25 07:18:53

There are many terms that originate from porn that have crept into common use, it’s pretty disgusting to our generation, teens have to cope on an everyday basis. Girls have to cope with boys that watch porn and use that language and have fantasies that are disgusting.

It’s a consequence of society allowing porn and violence to become widespread, WE have allowed it to happen by not upholding standards of decency 20 yrs ago we could have set restrictions on content.

HIS mental health… - really?

Don’t get me started on “that” excuse, it is a slap in the face to all with genuine MH problems.
Another particular bugbear of mine

“Nessa” sends it up rather well

Calendargirl Tue 28-Jan-25 07:12:37

Never heard of it either.

‘Where ignorance is bliss, …’

They just don’t learn, do they, the Gregg Wallaces’ the Wynne Evans’…..

GrannyGravy13 Tue 28-Jan-25 07:07:45

Kate1949

Friends are rallying round him due to 'concerns for his mental health'. Yawn.....

No excuse!

Galaxy Tue 28-Jan-25 06:56:47

It was the first episode of his new series this week, what an idiot.

eazybee Tue 28-Jan-25 06:55:34

Another career hits the dust.
Do these men have a death wish?

Galaxy Tue 28-Jan-25 06:48:46

No. Russel Brand being a good example.

mum2three Tue 28-Jan-25 06:19:30

Is it only men who have a problem attracting women who make this sort of remark?

BlueBelle Tue 28-Jan-25 06:03:04

Well here’s another who had never heard the expression but then a few years back I was telling my grown up grandkids about the ‘glory hole’ in Nans house where we kept all the coats and boots and had to ask why they were rolling with laughter ( I know now)
I don’t watch the show and couldn’t place the man until upthread it said about the advert so I know now …… he must have made a bomb from that awful advert

What a crude and nasty term to use, gutter brain, I bet he won’t use it again ….

Whiff Tue 28-Jan-25 05:57:55

Oh dear I just looked up what it meant . Sort of thing you would read in erotic fiction. Not to be said to anyone or about anyone in real life . Well his lost he's commercial contract and other sources of income I hope .

Truffle43 Tue 28-Jan-25 05:08:47

I have just googled the term and what a horrible thing to say . I had never heard of this expression and after looking it up hope it is not repeated ever,He seems like a thoroughly arrogant and entitled individual who does not deserve to work in entertainment.

JamesandJon33 Tue 28-Jan-25 03:48:01

We went to a concert Not a nice man .,a few years ago where he was the compère. He made a very unkind joke about a member of the orchestra, and was heckled by the audience whenever he returned to the stage.

buffyfly9 Tue 28-Jan-25 02:10:43

I like to think I'm worldly wise but I'd never heard of this expression either. What a disgusting excuse for a man, is he married?? If so I pity his wife. His advert for Go Compare used to drive me mad, I havn't seen it lately and a good job too as I cannot stand the man.

crazyH Tue 28-Jan-25 01:37:47

Never liked the man - has a leery look about him

nanna8 Tue 28-Jan-25 00:50:57

I’d never heard of it,either, so I looked it up. Pretty foul, shows the bloke up for what he is. Is it American? Never heard it in Australia ( we have our own vile language variations!)
