Our water South Midlands comes directly out of the Severn where there is ample flow year round what is needed is proper water grid to use that water to supply the South East, along with stopping leaks of course.

If you were right David, your water supply would already be serving Birmingham instead of Wales doing so. I know, we could just get rid of Wales and make it one big reservoir.

Birmingham is served by the Elan Valley dams that flows entirely by gravity, those dams have a limited catchment area the flow in the Severn is hundreds of times that.
Locally water was formerly pumped from local rivers but that didn’t meet EU standards so an alternative was found - the Severn, the downside is that it has to be pumped, that’s expensive.

Mamie the proverbial elephant in the room is of course that the UK is sadly lacking skilled workers.

If all these projects go ahead I assume the companies involved will have to advertise jobs abroad to fill the vacancies.

Yes I am sure that is true and workers will have to be recruited from overseas. The failure of successive governments to sort vocational education is appalling.

I appreciate that money isn’t everything, but it should be taken into consideration when making career decisions.

I might be completely wrong, but I’d guess that the massive further expansion at East Midlands parkway, which is at the airport/M1/M42 junction announced yesterday has something to do with the reopening of Doncaster. They aren’t far apart, and it would be quite feasible to use Doncaster for more freight, as both airports have only one runway.

It’s about time more emphasis was placed on that type of work.

My GS is an apprentice electrician, he attended the local grammar school and attained A levels, but wasn’t keen on going to university.

Hardly any of his peers went down the job/ apprentice route.

I do wonder what some of them will end up doing after their three years at uni.

Perhaps some of the teachers at GS’s old school will wonder who made the best choice when in a few years time, they need an electrician, and GS turns up at the door.

Robin Hood Airport needed more airlines to use it.

Flybe was one, but think they went bust.

But if more destinations were offered, and more airlines used it, people in that area wouldn’t have to travel to Heathrow or Manchester.

Heathrow would then be less busy.

Some are, some a mixture, some private finance.

I'm fine with a long term strategy, I think we've suffered from short termism in the past, but, I repeat, ignoring what is needed to be done right now is unsound on both the economic and political fronts,

DHL and the like are not just an add on. Freight is much bigger than that.
In any case if it takes as long to build as people on here think, it will be electric planes on the tarmac.

And in the meantime it's doing nothing for the 14 million plus people currently living in poverty...

Well no, but as I said upthread I know from people currently involved in major construction projects that some are ready to go as soon as funding is released. Surely good governance involves long term projects to create jobs and boost the economy as well as thise in the medium and short term.

Totally agree Maizie. It’s all ‘jam tomorrow’. Reeves claimed in her speech yesterday that she had ‘fixed the foundations’ in her Budget. She is completely deluded and, as you said upthread, doing things completely the wrong way round.

Heathrow is the one project that is contentious there are many others that are planned, Wind Power, Nuclear, Battery and Tech incentives the jobs that come from them aren’t trickledown.

David, you are absolutely correct, of course they're not 'trickle down'. Forgive me for getting a bit carried away.

My main contention is, of course, that promising jam tomorrow is both economically and politically illiterate.

They are encouraging (expecting) the general population to buy electric vehicles, swop our boilers for heat pumps (air or ground source).

They are putting extra taxes on flights to deter us from flying, and hey ho they are going to expand and/or reopen airports.

This government is sending mixed messages…

Labour may claim that not enough housing has been built for years and are promising more on greenfield or even sites of Special Scientific Interest, but wherever I have been in recent years, there has been a massive amount of house building going on around towns and villages but without the infrastructure needed to cope with it all.

That’s part of it Allora, there’s also a massive long term lack of maintenance and pipework replacement issue, and changes to the climate which affect the east of the UK particularly.

I can remember DH saying over 30 years ago that there was no planned maintenance happening in this country any more.

Don’t know how much Robin Hood Airport contributed to the economy, but it was very useful for anyone who lived in that area and wanted to travel.

Its closure was a shame.

Great if it opens again for that part of the country.

This airport serves a large area not otherwise covered. Useful for business people, freight and tourists it's good for the region. But it will have to work harder to make it pay.
