I think he was an important part of Blairs 'movement' and I think he understood the working class.

I had a real soft spot for him. He lived and breathed his belief system on the importance of social justice.

I met him several times, he was a lovely man.

He was a good man and his heart was in the right place. He stood by his girlfriend Pauline (who he later married) who had a baby by someone else when she was very young.

She had put the baby up for adoption after 3 years caring for him. When JP learned of this he urged her to get him back and he would raise him as his own son. They tried but it was too late and he had been placed for adoption.

They found him many years later in a very high military or police position and JP loved him as his other sons.

As far as I'm concerned, JP was "one of us", simply because he was a keen and knowledgeable jazz fan. Anyone who can hear the music is OK by me. There was no side to him either. That has to count for something in the world of politics.

With Big John you got what it said on the tin, a man who stuck to his principles. A rarity in politics today.

I loved the way his family went to his funeral in two Jaguars 😀

What you saw was what you got. An honest, big hearted, hard working politician. We won't see his like again for a long time.

He was bullied by certain Tory MPs who would click their fingers at him, and call "waiter". He rose above it. I'd rather have him as my MP than have them.

I agree- one of many politicians the like of which we won't see again.

He knew his own history and his job of representing his consistuents.

Yes, I recall one backwoods Tory MP used to shout 'Mine's a gin and tonic' at Prescott.
