Protection of our data, given Musk's actions

I read an interesting post on FB this morning, raising the question of how safe our data, as non USA citizens is. The major social media companies have our data, as do banks etc. I wonder what steps, if any, they are taking to protect this data, is it separate from US branches of the companies?

Its certainly a concern, but I don't fully understand how it all works across national borders.

Everytime you use your phone you are giving away data. I don't think it is of any use worrying about it anymore.

It is already out there, and some of it may be useful to someone, even me in the long run...?
