for Ukraine and the whole of Europe.

And will FORCE the UK to choose.

(Capitals do not always represent shouting, but emphasis).

A Trump aide has now told Zelensky to tone down his criticism of Trump and sign the agreement to allow Trump Ukraine's rare minerals. The arrogance is breathtaking.

pascal30 Thu 20-Feb-25 16:32:42

It would get very messy as Russia is so opposed to Ukraine's sovereignty.. I'm sure Putin wouldn't want to share any land that he considers Russian with Trump..

According to the ex head of MI6 Sir Alex Younger on Newsnight last night, we are heading for a falling out between Trump and Putin when they realise that their objectives are completely different.. very good watch

Trump is so unpredictable that he could reverse his position, ditch Russia and go all in to regain the occupied region in Ukraine
That would call Russia’s nuclear bluff but could get very messy.

Wyllow3 Thu 20-Feb-25 14:40:20

Incredible arrogance from the USA basically "shut up and sign the minerals deal"

BBC newsfeed

"White House National Security Adviser Michael Waltz says Ukraine needs to rein in its criticism of the US, as Washington tries to secure a peace deal to end the war."

"It's unacceptable, they [Ukraine] need to tone it down and take a hard look and sign that deal," he tells Fox News.

The deal he is referring to is a push by Donald Trump for access to rare minerals in Ukraine in return for aid,

or even as compensation for the support the US has already provided. (!!!!??)

We presented the Ukrainians really an incredible, and a historic opportunity," the adviser says, adding that it would be "sustainable" and "the best" security guarantee they could hope for

Zelensky has publicly rejected an American bid to gain access to – and profit from - Ukrainian minerals, saying: "I can't sell our state."

My question as I don't know - what is Ukraine supposed to get from the deal in terms of a piece deal? How much territory

Farage has spoken, I've put it on the Farage thread but will repeat here, tho dont want to trip up the board discussion

Well Farage has just spoken...and said virtually nothing, in fact has backed Trump

. It's from the Sky news timeline just out.

"Zelenskyy 'not a dictator' - but should set 'timeline' for elections in Ukraine

Nigel Farage has said Volodymyr Zelenskyy is "not a dictator" after being criticised for not speaking out against Donald Trump's attacks on Ukraine's president, but does think there should be a "timeline" for elections in the war-torn country

A fine example of saying virtually nothing at all, as it completely avoids major issues ,

and actually repeats the Trump myth that Zelensky's remaining in power under extreme war is internationally legally wrong in some way

which in fact, infers Zelensky is a dictator by demanding an election n the middle of a war torn situation where Zelensky clearly has the backing of his people.

Doublespeak?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 20-Feb-25 14:24:41

SKY news commenting on Farage about Trump? 😂
Tosh.
Picked up sound bites (conveniently).
I watched it. ✔️ on GBNews live.

Interesting, what's the reasoning?

What we need to know, now, from Reform.

Who will they be backing? Ukraine and Europe

or Trump and Putin. We all deserve to know.

We know the answer to that, and it's not Ukraine and Europe.

Ukraine could refuse the terms of any cease fire, what happens then, the US has said no more arms from us.

Do Europe go it alone backing Ukraine to keep fighting, that would mean using their/our own strategic reserves, Poland and Baltic states in particular would be very nervous, because if Russia attack them they would be left defenseless.

I think the war of words should end it’s not helping.

Have you considered telling Trump that the war of words should stop. As he's the one doing it.

Wyllow3 / we have an outbreak of unity on this forum where the majority share disgust and fear about Trump

Well, nearly all news outlets. I found the GB news report very ambiguous and certainly not fact checking claims such as Zelensky has been salting money away.

GB News is not a news outlet. It's a right wing echo chamber for wingnuts.

We need more news like this from the USA

"Trump's former vice-president, Mike Pence, also criticised the comments, posting on X: "Mr President, Ukraine did not 'start' this war. Russia launched an unprovoked and brutal invasion claiming hundreds of thousands of lives."

The BBC I player news has a round up of the front pages of the newspapers every day.

Every single one was angry with Trump's treatment of Zelensky, the accusations he started the war and is a dictator because he won't hold elections under martial law.

I dont think I've ever seen such unity.

Iam64 Thu 20-Feb-25 11:21:07

It surprises me that some see Trump as a businessman looking for the best deal

Iam64 Thu 20-Feb-25 11:19:33

Yes I know MaizieD. My sister laughed when I suggested this several years ago. Even the summer riots didn’t convince her Putin was behind the misinformation behind riots

Whitewavemark2 Thu 20-Feb-25 11:02:18

Just listening to the radio.

Let Trump stop supplying Ukraine which he fully intends to do.

Europe has something like 200bn€ of frozen Russian money. At the very least use the interest to fund Ukraine - sod Trump.

And increasingly it looks like Russia has indeed been busy undermining Britain for years

I just wonder - seeing as Russia excels at cyber crime and must be using AI - how sure can we be that Trump really won the election. Rumour has it that Putin interfered with our democratic process to make sure Brexit won the day, so is just possible in this day and age that he rigged it for Trump to win, and tbh Musk also has the wherewithal.

Europe as a United force is a threat both to Putin and Trump - obviously for different reasons, but it is clear that they see a good reason to work together I order to weaken Europe.

POTUS and Putin working together will I think unite Europe.

I hope I am right 🤞🏻
