From punchng.com/half-truths-many-lies-fact-checking-kemi-badenoch/?amp

Here’s an extract:

Claim 1
According to Ms Badenoch…
“I grew up in a poor country, and I watched my relatively wealthy family become poorer and poorer despite working harder and harder as their money disappeared with inflation. I came back to the UK at age 16 with my father’s last £100 in the hope of a better life …”

Findings
“Multiple sources revealed that Kemi spent her early years in Lagos, Nigeria, where she attended the International School Lagos, a private institution, and graduated in 1996 before returning permanently to the United Kingdom at 16.

In a tweet dated January 22, 2025, a Lagos-based tax consultant, Kayode Okunola, accused Badenoch of distorting her family’s history to fit a narrative of hardship.

“Dear @KemiBadenoch, stop lying about your background. You were never from a poor family! Your grandmother, ‘Iya Ondo,’ was a prominent lace and damask merchant on Kosoko Street in Balogun Market. Your mum was a professor at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. Your dad owned his clinic, your uncle was a dentist, and your aunt was among the Nigerian students recruited from the USA to the Central Bank of Nigeria,” Okunola wrote.
“If you were poor, what happened to the rest of us who prayed to come from families like yours? Your claims mock the memories of those who genuinely struggled without the opportunities your privileged upbringing afforded you. Please stop!” he added.

In an interview with Sunday PUNCH, Okunola further shed light on the privileged status of Kemi’s family.
He said, “I knew her family well. My family and the Adegokes attended the same church—St. John’s Anglican Church, Aroloya, Lagos Island. Her grandmother, ‘Iya Ondo,’ was a renowned figure in Balogun Market, selling premium fabrics, which weren’t for poor people. Her father owned Iwosan Hospital in Surulere, and her mother was a prominent figure in the Physiology Department at the University of Lagos.
“In those days, only a select few could afford private schools like the International School Lagos, where Kemi studied. It was a school for the children of professors and the elite. Most of us attended government schools. Kemi’s claims of poverty are simply untrue. Her narrative misrepresents her background and mocks the struggles of genuinely underprivileged Nigerians.”

Well, well!

Thanks for all this information. When she stood up the other day to have a go at Rachel Reeves in the H of C I thought “hang on surely you have a lot to answer for”as I recall various mistakes or errors of judgement before she became leader. There were certainly questions about her. Will have to ask dh as he remembers all these kind of details.

I agree, not sure RR has covered herself in glory.

Her “inaccurate” CV though, is not on the scale of KB blatant lies.

I’m hoping, tbh, both of them a replaced and soon.

We need a strong opposition, please god not another stream of Tory leaders and in-fighting, doesn’t help anyone.

Jaberwok Sun 16-Feb-25 10:22:34

Isn't it strange on here, that the vehement indignation and faux shock horror that is shown towards Conservative MPs is overwhelming, but towards Labour MPs who, apart from Rachels somewhat dubious CV, are by no means faultless, even charmingly referring to elderly voters as hags! the silence is deafening!

PoliticsNerd Sun 16-Feb-25 10:09:52

You are correct growstuff but there are some important nuances.

Prior to the British Nationality Act 1981, anyone born in the UK was automatically a British citizen. It seems Badenoch slipped in by a year. This could not happen now. We no longer have citizenship simply by birth in the UK.

The Conservatives seem to put a woman in charge when things are about to go badly wrong for them and they need a fall guy/girl. When the storm is over they drop her like a hot potato and slip an old Etonian in to romp to glory.

I thought exactly that when they appointed Liz Truss.

Puts Reeves and Badnoch on the same level. Both were economical with the truth when talking about their pre-parliamentary days.

I disagree. Badenoch has completely fabricated a back story. When she was selected to run as an MP, she impressed the selection panel by portraying herself as a first generation immigrant, who had spent her childhood in Africa in poverty - she actually claimed that she had to walk for miles to fetch fresh water (flashback to those charity appeals for Biafra), who had then gone on to achieve a degree in engineering. The day after she was selected, I spoke to a man who had been on that selection panel. He was a civil engineer and Badenoch gave the impression she had worked on construction sites - she actually studied computer engineering, but didn't correct the impression she made. The selection panel was bowled over by the rags to riches tale.

Badenoch has also completely changed her campaign. When she first stood as an MP in 2010, it was in a seat with many black Africans, so she tried to persuade them she would be their champion. Now she denies that the UK experiences institutional racism and downplays her Nigerian roots. Her parents made sure their daughter would be eligible for British citizenship, but now she wants to make it harder for new immigrants to be eligible.

She has also claimed to have business and financial experience - she has neither. She worked as a systems analyst at Royal Bank of Scotland and Coutts. Her comments on the teaching of history are baffling because history has only just been re-introduced into Nigerian schools and it's possible she didn't study it herself, so it's maybe not surprising she's just plain wrong in what she claims.

I don't have much time for Rachel Reeves, but as far as being economical with the truth is concerned, she and Badenoch are not on the same level.

Thank for taking the time to write that post growstuff.

Like you, I don't think the issues I would have with two women are anywhere near comparable.

Another liar, they are mounting up, time for them all to go.

Yes. Although I don’t like KB or RR and think their lies are unacceptable,
the defence and excusing of RR’s lies will continue to flow.

IMO they’re both unacceptable.

Evidently there is a scale of lies which are acceptable in politics and the implication on GN that lying about your background /CV is only acceptable for LP politicians.

If Badenoch is lying, then, fair enough, she too deserves a severe rollicking on here.
I can't be bothered to check out much about her, because she is pretty ineffectual as Leader of the Opposition, and as such, I don't think she will last very long anyway.

I agree, they’re going to choose a more electable candidate before the next GE.

So many do it don’t they? When will they realise that their back stories don’t matter as long as they seem competent.Coming from the back streets of Bolton and elbowing your way up to the HOC only proves you have sharp elbows.Yet they all vie with one another to prove who has the common touch. The voters don’t care if they went to Eton or Bog St Comp.

I doubt it Jane43!

Jane43 Sun 16-Feb-25 09:28:31

I wonder if Chris Mason will do a series of articles about this?

LizzieDrip Sun 16-Feb-25 09:20:05

I agree that she won’t be Tory leader for much longer, so didn’t know whether to bother starting this thread or not.

I decided it was ‘discussion worthy’ because her level of deceit is off the scale, and she is the leader of HM Opposition - even though her days are numbered.

Kandinsky Sun 16-Feb-25 08:17:53

Agree with escaped, she’ll be long gone before the next election so not bothered.

eazybee Sun 16-Feb-25 07:46:32

Running scared?

Badenoch’s days as leader are in count down I suspect.

Her performance in the H onC is pretty dismal, as each week she displays her complete lack of preparation and care over her questions and each week comes out a little bit more humiliated than the last.

I would be astounded if the Tories went into the next election with her as leader.

I think that they may be biding their time to identify a potential leader among their ranks. That is the main and serious issue. Who on earth is there?

They always intended for her to come here anyway, didn’t they, which is why her mother flew here to give birth to her so she could claim British citizenship?

We don't have citizenship by birth alone (unlike the USA where it is part of their constitution). She must have had other, additional claims.

It was reported in the Guardian, that Kemi Badenoch had forgotten to arrange the paperwork to transfer control of the Conservative party from Rishi Sunak when she won the leadership contest. I assume this technically means Rishi Sunak remained leader until this month. This level of incompetence from Badenoch should prove she's not capable of running the country if she can't even organise this basic, but important, paperwork.

She constantly reminds me of a fresher at university who believes she is smarter and more knowledgeable than those already there. She left me with this feeling when I watched her give evidence to the Post Office Enquiry. Her arrogance was stunning. It will be interesting to see if her actions were within or without the law.

Not true!

"Sections 4 and 5 of the British Nationality Act 1948
Sections 4 and 5 of the 1948 Act provided for the acquisition of citizenship of the UK and Colonies (CUKC) for those born between 1 January 1949 and 31 December 1982.

Section 4 – birth
Under section 4 a person became a citizen of the UK and Colonies (CUKC) by birth if they were born within the UK and Colonies."

Well, she’s a politician isn’t she? Surely you don’t expect the truth from many of them?….😬

Of course I do! She's a liar and being a politician is no excuse.

I'm not even sure I would call the claims she has made about her background "half truths" (as in the OP) - I'd just call them lies.
