Niece has just lost her job as a direct result of Musk’s edict.

She’s American, a PhD who has been working for years on climate change research. In her current job she still has to complete a year’s probation, hence the sacking, since Musk had ruled that all government probationers will be given the boot.

Luckily her former boss at a university will probably be able to re-employ her, but many thousands will not be so lucky.

An estimated 200,000 government employees lost their jobs this week. This doesn't include those in the trickle down lines of private compaines who have lost contracts.

They also lost health insurance.

It is going to be bad. And it will start affecting people around the world. No one, it seems, can escape these mad men.

Absolutely and terrifyingly appalling.

At least if that happened here in the UK people would still get “free” healthcare and some welfare benefits.

I feel for anyone employed in public service in the US.

Sorry about your niece’s job, Wizend flowers

Thank you, ayse, very worrying times

Thousands have and are losing their jobs over here due to Labour policies!!

Could you please clarify that?

Excuse my ignorance, I've no clue what happening. But are they doing fire and rehire?

Just firing, instant. No warning, no rehiring. Added to that the termination letter say the workers are being fired because of poor performance - even those who have had excellent performance reviews, or haven't worked there long enough to have had any reviews. They seem to think they won't be sued for unfair dismissal if they blame the work of the employees.

I feel so desperately sorry for every person out of work because of Musk, one of the richest men on earth causing others to lose their income. How many families now worry about paying the bills, the mortgage, medical bills, and saving for a college fund for the kids. Homes everywhere in the US will now be plunged into despair, jobs are not plentiful am sure in smaller towns and cities, houses will be repossessed, cars sold.
And yet Trump put himself up there as the 'everyman' the antiestablishment hero who would make things better for the ordinary American. Yeah. Looks like it is really working. Not.

Not comparable in terms of reasons or numbers.

Babs03 Mon 17-Feb-25 19:42:40

Meanwhile the anti-establishment hero is cosying up to Putin to get a 50% share of rich minerals in Ukraine.
Is obscene.

Yet still people laud Reform in this country, still see the traitorous Farage as a viable candidate for PM despite his appalling record so far as a constituency MP, despite his toadying to Trump, admiration of Musk, despite his acknowledged desire to stop the provision of NHS services free at point of use. I find it hard to articulate my despair at the foolishness of those who will likely suffer the most under an extreme right wing government.

What has happened to adding a picture to a post?

I am trying to add one, but at the "Add your message here" it doesn't have that facility any more?

I am relieved to hear that your niece may have a job after this, Witzend, but I share your dismay and agree that this is the tip of a very large iceberg. We all know the potential icebergs have to create disaster.

Elegran Mon 17-Feb-25 20:27:15

In the U.S. Forest Service approximately 3,400 federal employees have been fired. A cartoon (which I have not been able to post angry ) has been created in response, featuring Smokey Bear in forest ranger uniform and hat. In large letters it says "Only YOU can prevent forest fires." then in smaller letters below is added "Seriously. We've been defunded. It's just you now."

Someone has commented that they are probably going to sell off land, develop, drill etc. Elsewhere someone has commented that maybe they think that changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America will mean that Biden's legislation prohibiting more drilling in the Gulf will no longer have any effect, so they plan to drill there and make even more billions for those on the gravy train.

In the Bernie Sanders' interview posted on GN yesterday he pointed out that the combined wealth of Musk, Zuckerberg and Bezos is the same as that of the poorest 50% of the population of the USA.

How much richer do these people need to be?
Why do they want to make other people poorer and cause public services to fail in their own country?

There was an outbreak of pornographic pictures being posted on Mumsnet last week (there was a thread somewhere on Gnet about it) I suspect that the facility has been withdrawn to prevent it happening again on Mumsnet or on here.

I had a look earlier but there was nothing about it on 'Site Stuff'. I think the mods should have given us some warning or posted a notice about it.

Elegran Mon 17-Feb-25 21:38:46

So that they can buy the country cheap in the closing-down sale.

MaizieD Mon 17-Feb-25 21:40:28

Just looked on Site Stuff and there's a thread about the withdrawal of the picture posting facility.

Elegran Mon 17-Feb-25 21:43:55

That was to Churchview
To MaisieD - I reported the vanishing picture-adding to GGNHQ. Reply was "Image posting has been turned off on Gransnet for now. We're sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate it's a pain.
We'll be looking to get back to normal as soon as we can."

I'd heard about the pictures on Mumsnet, but I'd have thought they would have closed down the possibility here on Grannsnet earlier than today. Maybe someone was trying it on again here on the past few days.

Elegran Mon 17-Feb-25 21:47:28

I started that one, Maizie

Carriage costs could be pretty high across the Atlantic Irish Ocean.

HousePlantQueen Mon 17-Feb-25 22:04:58

Sorry can't quite understand your post, are you saying that a dozen large white eggs has gone from $5.97 to $49.80?

Elegran Mon 17-Feb-25 22:06:05

For eggs, that is, not pics.

Elegran Mon 17-Feb-25 22:07:28

I think the price equals 48 cents each

^I am so sorry to hear that Witzend. It's a personal disaster, which when multiplied by all the other dismissals, will turn into an economic one for the USA. People on benefit cannot afford to spend, except on essentials. Economic growth will flatline and fall.^

Depends if those people get jobs in the Private sector instead, I would say.
Or go into other Public service jobs where they can help say the USA some money. In one way or another.

How does the public sector make money?

imaround Mon 17-Feb-25 22:48:07

The average cost of a dozen eggs right now in the US is $8, when you can find them.
