VE day is always a Bank Holiday in France. We have a ceremony similar to November 11th. I take flowers from our garden for the British pilot who died in our Normandy village in 1944.

It’s the 80th anniversary of VE Day
in 80 days time, according to the lunch-time news.

In 1933 the Oxford Union, the university undergraduate debating society, passed a famous motion that “This House would not in any circumstances fight for King and Country”.

In 1939 they did.

those who fought and contributed to the war effort in WW2 would be horrified at the usurping of the military in order to promote nationalism and oppression and not the freedoms we should all share. I doubt it because they grew up in the 1920s and 1930s so grew up in a period when there was an usurping of the military in order to promote nationalism and oppression and not the freedoms we should all share.

I think they would fully understand that after 80 years much had been forgotten and needed to be relearned.

Spot on.

So many young people know that young men went to war to fight for freedom, but they seem to have been misled about what those freedoms were, and still are.

I feel so many who fought and contributed to the war effort in WW2 would be horrified at the usurping of the military in order to promote nationalism and oppression and not the freedoms we should all share.

I am glad my parents didn't live to see the free world they fought for become this terrible mess... I feel ashamed.

It’s the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

Almost our entire UK stuck together and acted as one.

We have Remembrance Day every year on 11/11, lest we forget.

Have we forgotten?

I truly believe our forefathers fought for freedom, freedom for all nations, freedom of speech, freedom to live life to the full and as oneself, all within the constraints of our laws.

Many other nations joined us to help this fight for freedom.

Isn’t it time we put our finer feelings behind us and came together to keep our fine country safe and well for ALL.
