To mum2three: You thought that being incredibly rude to a man who's first and second languages are not English was great? Words fail me.

Trump/Zelensky interview in the White House
(676 Posts)Iām shocked to the core by the absolute rudeness shown to Zelensky by Trump and Vance this afternoon.Iāve never seen anything like it.
However much they disagreed with things Zelensky said it was a terrible thing to see them try and humiliate him on public tv.
How Zelensky kept calm in the face of it I donāt know.
Even for Trump this was a new low. It should have been talks in private.š¤¬

Was it an oped piece Wyllow? if so, Bezos has changed the political focus and has a new Trump friend editor in place as the old one resigned.
He has changed the focus.
More than 75,000 digital subscribers to The Washington Post have cancelled since its owner, billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, announced on Wednesday that he would radically overhaul the paper's opinion pages to reflect libertarian priorities and to exclude opposing points of view.

Russian reporter must have snuck in. They were ejected.
Now they are sucking up and appeasing the Kremlin! Ignorance is bliss on your part!
Remember Trump made the decision that only 'approved' reporters should be allowed into the White House?
So, why was there a Russian reporter in attendance?
Well, Merz, most likely Germans next chancellor, has hit nail on head:
"Germany's likely next chancellor Friedrich Merz says Friday's exchange between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House was a "manufactured escalation".
It was not a spontaneous reaction to interventions by Zelensky, but obviously a manufactured escalation in this meeting in the Oval Office," Merz tells a news conference in Hamburg, Reuters and AFP news agencies report
Merz says Europe is now under pressure to act quickly: "We must now show that we are in a position to act independently in Europe."
I think both Putin and Trump want a fractured Europe, and it's up to us to stand together. Proof: Russia has responded officially for the first time
"Russia has reacted to the exchange for the first time, accusing Zelensky of "a total lack of diplomatic ability" - it also says "a fragmentation of the West has begun"
(all info from BBC feed)
If things were going badly it would have made sense to ask the cameras to leave and continue the discussion in private. The fact that it was a public spectacle made it all so much worse.
To Mum2three I'm amazed any civilised mind could enjoy that. As for Trump speaking his mind, it wouldn't be so bad if there was anything intelligent in it worth hearing. If you can't see that Trump & Vance orchestrated that, words fail me.
Politics should not become a Soap Opera of any type of dramatic TV show

ttom When I realised the whole meeting was planned in advance I had a good idea what would happen. Apparently there is a disc circulating the shows the rehearsals the day before. A flunky standing in for Zelenskyy. You have to remember Trump isn't a world leader, he's a sexual predator.
Also, a convicted felon on 34 counts of fraud .
His behaviour is nothing but criminal .
It was a pleasure to see how Sir Kier Starmer set up the Lancaster House meeting and everyone went courteously about their business in helping to solve a very serious problem in a very dignified and ceremoniously attractive way.
Politics should not become a Soap Opera any type or dramatic sTV how.

I also thought it was distressing to watch....until I watched the whole interview, Zelensky was not bullied IMHO, he insulted USA saying no-one has helped him, I don't like Trump but he remained silent while Zelensky was speaking, Z on the other hand interrupted Vance and sat petulantly with his arms crossed.....there are two sides to every story and it pays to watch the whole thing not just the cherry picked parts they want us to watch. Well , the whole world saw what really happened two bullies cornered Zelensky .
Why was Vance even there ?
Did you see the third male standing having a snipe as well about Zelensky not wearing a suit ? That was Marjorie Taylor Greenās fiancĆ© .She is a totally wacky politician from Georgia.
Why was he there ⦠hiding behind a lamp ?
Why was this televised appearance not just Trump and Zelensky ?
This was a planned attack and pretty vile to watch .

I suppose ( in this country at least) the armed forces are a career choice.
So is the priesthood, but neither are done for extortionate amounts of money and both require conviction.
Conviction? Mmm, I'm not sure. The armed forces seem to be marketed to disaffected young people as a way to see the world and learn a trade.
Are they acting from conviction or necessity?

I was very proud to see England and the other countries step up. That left me hopeful for Ukraine. I continue to remain ashamed of the United States.
mum2three says sheās pleased to hear Trump speaking his mind ( and what a mind ) . Iāve never hear the ignorant man string an articulate sentence together or use words more complicated than ā big ,big ,bigā or ābad, bad ,bad ā .

Oreo,
I agree totally with you.
Truly goes to show the public, what trash they really are.
And Vance is married to an Indian woman and he is a totally ignorant racist !
Unbelievable ..

How dare Trump expect an apology from Zelenskyy???
What on earth has Zelenskyy got to apologise for!
What is he expected to apologise for, exactly?
Not wearing a suit? Not bowing his head and being quiet whilst the finger-wagging Trump berated him publicly for suggesting that he wanted some kind of guarantee against future Russian aggression in this 'deal'?
Not responding to the side-kick Vance who demanded a thank-you?
As Trump mentioned - 'great television' viewing, eh?
Two bullies publicly browbeating a foreign President in a language that is not his native language - too stupid, too arrogant and full of their own self-importance to realise that you can get your point across equally well with a measured tone, civility and diplomacy... and probably more likely with an end result.

I thought he would likely sign.
For me, the writing was on the wall when the NATO secretary General, or whatever he is called, told Zelensky to go back to Trump and sort things out.
I would hope that Zelensky, and presumably his aides, are very careful about what exactly they sign.
As Laura Kuensberg writes in this article, the White House, fairly or not, has the power to protect or abandon his Country.

I have heard hardly anything in all this from the assemblies of elected representatives of the voters of the US.
The occasional governor has expressed his opinion, but the assemblies of the Senate and Congress - the much vaunted checks and balances which are supposed to keep the President from zooming off on his own personal vendettas - has been strangely quiet as Trump used his power of direct edicts (for use in an national emergency)
When Boris Johnson was attempting to bypass Parliamentary procedure there were loud protests from Parliamentarians (and a judgment against him passed by the Scottish Law. Lords)
āClassic in domestic abuse - the look what you made me do tactic. I only hit you because you made me. Apologise to me for winding me upā
Precisely Iam64.
Iām sure that anyone who has, sadly, been in that horrible situation will recognise the behaviourš¢

I would like to think that Trump does not come out of this looking good.
If he is a person who is bothered by legacies[not sure he is, though a lot of higher up people are], I think his is now tarnished at least.
