I am not joking. This war is sickening. In what way am I totally ill informed about this war? Why are you so invested in it continuing?

ronib you are beginning to sound like a 5th columnist. Are you lumbered with William Joyce as an ancestor?

How many more years of fighting, how many more dead soldiers?

I think you should be asking that question of the Russians. Or are you denying they were/are the aggressors?

RosieandMaw so Americans should be relieved that at last a president has looked for a cessation of hostilities and loss of life. It’s perfectly moral to ask Z to stop the slaughter and discuss a peace plan. For Starmer and Macron to pretend that Ukraine can win is grossly irresponsible and foolish. Get over it. Ukraine lost.

Zelensky to stop the slaughter ?

You are either joking or so totally ill informed about this war!

RosieandherMaw Tue 04-Mar-25 07:55:30

Get over it. Ukraine lost

I suppose from your attitude you believe we should have rolled over and let Argentina annex the Falklands?
What next- where does China fancy? Got Hong Kong, maybe move on to Australia?
US to annex Greenland before declaring Canada its 51st State?

No - bullies should not always prevail.

It sounds to me like Putin is bringing pressure to bear on Trump to secure this deal asap or else. I mean I know the war has lasted 3 years but why the sudden knee jerk urge to end it by any means, including giving Putin Ukrainian territory and easing sanctions on Russia. Neither the former or the latter make any kind of sense when a ceasefire hasn’t even been agreed.
Obviously Putin has Trump in his sway and is dictating what he should do, and I do believe this will include getting rid of Zelenskyy and replacing him with a pro Putin leader so that Putin can rule Ukraine by proxy.
Is just so obvious that this is the case. Maybe Putin has ‘the goods’ on Trump or maybe he is angling to get the mineral rich territory and split it with Trump, maybe both are true. Certainly this is not how we end wars.

I agree, plenty of Americans are as shocked as we are. The world order is crumbling before our very eyes. Trump boasted about bringing peace to Ukraine and this is how he wants it to happen. By threatening to abandon a country that’s been invaded by an aggressor.
He cares nothing for other countries unless they’re making him look good. Trump is one of the most evil men who have ever been world leaders and definitely the most ignorant. This is how dictators operate, by working their people up by telling them that their country is the greatest on earth.
America First and Deutschland Ueber Alles. The same thing.

I think what Trump/Putin are hoping is that apart from reducing Ukraine’s military capability is to destabilise the leadership, and get rid of Zelenskyy.

Spot on and exactly what my dh and I were forecasting some days ago. Putin now inhabits the White House.

Another pivot towards Russia?

To any American hoping to apply for British citizenship please be aware that our hospitals are crumbling, the NHS is in the process of being remodelled, private education is under fire, food prices rise all the time and energy is in a state of flux and super expensive.
Not only that but Europe has refused to pay its way on defence and it will take at least 3 years to build itself back to where it should be.
It’s entirely right for Trump to take full responsibility for the defence of America and to encourage the rest of the world to meet its own obligations without recourse to America.

I would to publicly disassociate myself from the above post .
I can say no more except that for those with great wealth there also comes great responsibility.
The US has been content to have great influence in distant parts of the world employing its great power - not always necessarily to the advantage of others.
Power and wealth carry with them a duty to those less fortunate. Many Americans genuinely share that belief and they must be as shocked as the rest of the free world at what is being done “in their name”

ronib Tue 04-Mar-25 07:25:57

European countries are not in a position to protect Ukraine as they have depleted their own defence infrastructure. America does not have to agree to support the Ukrainian war indefinitely and with no end plan. Arguably having given 3 years support, it is now asking for resolution and that is not unreasonable.

Casdon Tue 04-Mar-25 07:22:15

I agree GrannyGravy13. It was bound to happen. It’s bully boy tactics. I think domestic issues will now consume Trump, he certainly isn’t in a comfortable position.

escaped Tue 04-Mar-25 07:18:34

Trump was always going to do what Trump wants to do. On this issue and on others.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 04-Mar-25 07:12:49

It was obvious that this was coming, I am not in the least bit surprised

So Yelensky is to be sacrificed to pander to the vanity of an egomaniac, that is, one who has a psychological disorder that makes him believe he is the greatest, most important person in the world.

In the early 90s, Ukraine had the third highest number of nuclear missiles in the world after Russia and the USA. It agreed to dispose of those missiles if the USA, UK, France and some other European countries agreed to provide protection of the country. That happened. It is rich in minerals, especially lithium, and is very vulnerable to Russia. Now there is a war with Russia. The European countries have not abandoned it. The USA has.

And also eases sanctions on Russia.

Well, if that doesn't prove the Man-Baby isn't in the pay of Putin then nothing will.
