I was very encouraged by his speech. The Democrats reacted like sulky children.

I just read an article somewhere that Trump is pulling the world into the 21st century…. So if for one moment, we stopped the group think that Trump is automatically bad, what do we find?

Also since Trump has only been in office for weeks, we should take the long view.

Mmmm like people take the long view about Starmer?

I’d like to know in what way Trump is pulling the “world” into the 21st Century? What does that even mean?

Many of us think Trump is actually taking “his world” backwards, especially for women, immigrants, the disabled, and those on low incomes.

NotSpaghetti Thu 06-Mar-25 09:48:33

Did anyone actually listen to the whole thing?
I did.
It was dull and rambling and full of self-congratulatory "padding".
It was also a show-and-tell of people he approved of.
- the border control officer who was once under fire
- the wife and daughters of the man who was shot when Trumps ear was nicked
- the mother of the born-female student who had wanted to transition and whose school allowed them to use the pronoun "them"
- the mother of a young woman who had been stabbed by an "illegal"
- Elon Musk "doing great things"
- the young boy who had been recovering from a brain tumor for several years and who he made a "special agent"....

I am not a trump fan but would have picked out anything new and exciting in it I think.
I have no idea why Arto1s found it inspiring.

Not if it loses you ever election it isnt, and if it means those who would normally support you wouldnt dream of voting for you. I dont think trust is a small issue I think it is fundamental in politics, and if as a party your misogyny is such that you put men in prisons with some of the most vulnerable women then I cant possibly support you. I also think that what has happened to children will be seen historically as one of the greatest medical blunders of all time, so no I dont think it will be seen as a small issue. I think that historians etc will be analysing it for years to come.

I think I made my position very clear and transparent.

I don’t think transitioned male to female should be in women only spaces, that includes prisons, sports. changing rooms, toilets, etc etc etc.

Irrespective of how you feel, it’s a teeny weeny problem in the great scheme of things and affects a very small part of the population.

Far far less than all the women in the USA affected by the barbaric abortion/pregnancy care laws.

I don’t really understand your obsession with such a very small cohort of people, many of whom just get on with their lives and cause no one any trouble.

A stopped clock is right twice a day but you wouldn’t want to agree to all the wrong times of day on it.

conservativewoman.co.uk is running a series of articles on Trump.

I don't know - what do we find? Can you link us to what you have just read, so we can see for ourselves?

Don’t worry Trump is on track to achieve more good than we can recognise at the moment. We are very blinkered here.

Oh, that's great news. Here was I thinking we are close to way, a global depression and huge surges in immigration.

Please share the good that is coming our way - I could do with some positive focus.

Grandmabatty Thu 06-Mar-25 09:30:10

In the words of all good Scots, ronib, Aye, right.
You are on the wrong side here. Read the facts coming from America about tariffs, lost jobs, rising food costs etc and that's without commenting on his disastrous foreign plans.

I sometimes read The Grauniad. Does that help at all?

Making a joke out of someone’s spelling is very low. Some people are dyslexic, or maybe just not great at spelling? Picking someone apart for that is horrible.
And often it’s a typo which I’m sure you know.

I agree with you Arto1s about men in women’s sport. Something needs to be done but our politicians are too scared to do anything. You’ll get little support on this board though, because despite it being mostly women, they don’t care that their very existence is slowly being destroyed. Too busy shouting ‘boo hiss’ at right wingers.

How very true, lots of vocal LP guardian-reading posters!

That, frankly, is a load of nonsense. It’s just that most of us are capable of juggling more than one issue in our minds, and don’t think that one good thing Trump has done alleviates the hundreds of bad things.

I'm not interested in sport. I'm not interested in men becoming women or whatever.

I am horrified at what is going on and what may unfold.

As am I

Didn’t he say he wanted the death penalty for anyone who kills a policeman. After releasing from prison the people involved in the insurrection in which several policemen were killed.

Grandmabatty Wed 05-Mar-25 21:11:44

It was said on twitter that Trump is backtracking on the Canada and Mexico tariffs. He found his bullying tactics didn't work. Be prepared to hear that they are 'meeting in the middle '. It's untrue. Canada and Mexico have categorically said that won't happen

I think most of us will agree anyone who is biologically male, whether transitioned or not, is not going to be able to “fairly” compete again most women and not have an unfair advantage.

I also don’t think men and women can alter their biological sex, however they can live very settled stable lives, causing no one any harm, as a different gender to which they were assigned at birth.

In many countries, including ours, they can be given a legal status showing that they are now living their life as man or woman.

It doesn’t bother me, I agree transitioned males now living as women shouldn’t be in women’s prisons, or compete against women in sport.

However, in the great scheme of things it really is a teeny weeny issue.

Agree Cossy.
In the majority of sports trans women do not compete against biological women, but if it happens it is not fair in my opinion. Nor do I think trans women should be in biological women’s jails or use ‘women only’ spaces.
This is, however, as you have said, an issue that really only affects the very smallest percentage of people. The majority will not be affected by this in any way.
And I support the right for individuals to change gender. I cannot say that I understand this but that doesn’t mean I have the right to enforce my own norms upon others.

US stock market in free fall due to crippling tariffs issued to China, Mexico, and Canada, that will come right back to bite ordinary Americans.
Hundreds of thousands of federal workers without jobs.
The POTUS cosying up to Putin in order to grab a deal over minerals whilst throwing Ukraine under the bus, thereby threatening the security of Europe.
Plans to make Gaza into a Trump themed resort.
Plans to take over Canada and Greenland.

And the OP cites men not being in women’s sports. Pretty soon I think that will be the very least of our worries.

Hardly freefall!
And probably gone up since you last saw it.

Yes, lowest I think since last November, but I find looking at historic charts interesting.
Not a disaster yet.

Agree Babs03.

Having just listened to President Macron’s speech to the French nation, we may be closer to that day than we think.

As you say Babs, men in women’s sport may be the least of our worries very soon.

Exactly.

👍it would be very foolish to do so.
