Had Trump rattled the tiger's cage?

Trump doesn't want war as he says it's bad for business but he has angered China with the tariffs he is imposing on them.
I wonder if China are gearing up for a war with the USA.

nanna8 Thu 06-Mar-25 07:47:23

The Chinese are circling Australia with their warships. What’s that all about? Quite frightening. The only thing is, the Chinese already own half of Australia financially so perhaps that will protect us? We are not a strong country in a military sense and our leaders are not strong types, either.

I agree with some others. Trump is not interested in Europe or Russia as his enemy. China is where he will concentrate his efforts. A much bigger and more difficult opponent. Europe must look after itself and seek unity amongst those living there.Perhaps impossible, looking at history but at least attempts should be made. The UK needs to make a few choices for the future.

This is closer to reality Trump is wary of China, and does not want a war in Ukraine to make the US vulnerable to anything China may decide to do. Australia and NZ is very vulnerable to China as Nanna is very aware, not especially military threat, economic threat is much more a reality. Economically a major trade dispute would have a dramatic effect very quickly.

So if Trump is no longer with us, do we consider that he is against us?
Not particularly against us, I think that Trump is just for Trump and his wealthy pals.

I am getting more concerned about Trump. He's ruffling too many feathers and it doesn't bode well. It's hard to believe how in only a few weeks Trump and his crew has turned so many against him.

Am wondering what his possible plan can be, in the past the US has benefitted from a good relationship with its allies, certainly after the twin towers attack the US called upon its allies to put boots on the ground in Iraq, and very many allies put their own service personnel in the line of fire alongside the US, Ukrainian forces included, some losing their lives.
And again many allies joined the US in Afghanistan, with service personnel losing their lives.
Whatever Trump believes the US has done for its allies, it has very much been a case of vice versa. And whatever money the US has given to its allies has been loaned, not gifted. After the Second World War the US loaned money to help rebuild the UK, but we just finished paying it back with interest in 2016.
This petulant and rather peevish attitude towards allies, as if we stole all the jam, is as risible as it is damaging.
Macron has just made a speech about the possibility of no longer considering the US to be on the side of Europe.
So if Trump is no longer with us, do we consider that he is against us?
Recent behaviour has shown that this could very well be the case.

Oh how Trump loves the limelight and the dramatic.

From "All the worlds a stage"

"Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon’s mouth.

I quoted part of that to DH yesterday - but it was the bit about sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.

Old age doesn't come on its own but quite honestly, I wouldn't want to be young right now. ☹

I think when we are older we tend to worry more than when we were young? Just my opinion of course, comparing it with the younger people I do actually talk to. and times in my life when the world seemed close to war.

That said, I think Trump is the most dangerous dictator we have had for some considerable time.

" done and dusted" an odd turn of phrase.

Done and dusted? More than odd.

Casually brushing aside the pain and deaths in this invaded country, the support we've given Ukranians, the dangers of Putin (and the difficulty of actually really ending a conflict with him)

Sorry to have to read this turn of phrase about a war.

Babs03 China would have come in and lured then from China! The deal is with 100 billion dollars! Think about that! My goodness. just hope China doesn't manage to do another deal with them!! I would like to see Starmer secure us a deal worth that! Starmer chasing investors away .

Nice to see the POTUS is making plenty of friends 🫣
If Trump is a good business man since when is peeing off trade partners made good business sense.

Except as most of us know, he’s actually a rubbish businessman, he’s has bankrupted many of the companies set up by his father and grandfather.

He’s an utter buffoon and if he truly believes anyone, including Putin, will support him against China, he’s even more deluded than most of us believe.

Yes, I agree with pascal30.

Sad for my children and future generations, if they are allowed to exist.

We’ve been through some scary times in our life on earth but none has made me feel so nervous as having the orange megalomaniac in charge.

In opinion Trump has played an absolute blinder! We know many people who live in America and they fully support him for looking after his people. I only wish Starmer gave a fig about us!

I know many people in America, where my son lives. Not one of them supports Trump. Trump is only interested in the rich, he looks down upon the ordinary people who constitute the vast majority of Americans and doesn’t care a jot what happens to them.

I’ve said for a while Trump’s wanted Ukraine done and dusted so that he can concentrate on China - his biggest perceived threat it seems.

A great deal of our infrastructure contains electronics from China, any reduction of supply or service would hit us all hard. That includes the devices we are using now, you can be sure China has advanced cyber warfare ability.

David49 Absolutely. The Ukraine war has to stop. I have already said that China is the threat to us all. We all need to focus on that. We won't until the Ukraine war is over. One war is more than enough at once to deal with. China is 'big' in every sense of the word. You can hardly buy anything these days that does not come from China. We all need to get self sufficient away from China. They must not get any bigger economically.

Barleyfields Wed 05-Mar-25 17:57:20

looking after his people

I wonder how looked after they will feel when reciprocal trade tariffs start to bite?

David49 Wed 05-Mar-25 17:52:58

As I posted a few days ago one of the reasons Trump did not want to escalated Ukraine was that a dispute with China would leave the US badly exposed.

On the global scale Ukraine is small fry, getting bogged down in Ukraine would leave the US badly exposed to China who are a far bigger threat. Trump would have been advised of China taking advantage of a war with Russia,

Not at all. Trump knows China is the threat. Hence he has managed to get the world's largest chip manufacturer to build their factory in Texas. Lured them away from Taiwan. Other large companies now which need chips in their products will no doubt also move to America. America will grow. China will lose business. Very good for the whole world. China is a threat to us all. People need to wake up to this real threat. Starter most definitely needs to wake up!

There are many of us waking up to the fact that Trump is as big a threat as both Russia and China.
No longer an ally.
Btw Taiwan is not China. Well at least not yet.
