Well..who'd have thought it - we've exported a "numbers man" at a crucial time in Canda's future.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c80y3m249z3o

Determined to stand up to Trump, presumably really knows his way around tariff wars.

"The former Bank of England governor chose to lean strongly into resisting Donald Trump's policies at his acceptance speech.

He said the US president had brought "dark days" from "a country we can no longer trust" and that he was "proud" of Canadians resisting the US "with their wallets".

While on trade specifically Mr Carney vowed to keep the retaliatory tariffs "until Americans show us respect", it was clear that the general threats against Canadian sovereignty are equally as important in his thinking.

Trump has repeatedly said he will use economic power to encourage Canada to become the 51st state of the US, but Carney hit back. "The Americans want our resources, our land, our water, our country… Canada will never be part of America in any way, shape or form," he said."

"Carney has experience in this area having dealt with a number of acute political-economic crises, such as the banking crash, the eurozone crisis, sterling's sharp slide after Brexit, and the start of the pandemic.
He has also regularly attended G20 meetings at leader level, including in the presence of Trump, as chair of the Financial Stability Board, an international economic body. At one such meeting, the Trump team threatened to leave the International Monetary Fund."

More in the article, but I noticed two points:

His rise to the top job raises the stakes for the UK. On the one hand, a more robust approach from an allied G7 leader stands in contrast to the UK's attempt to hug the White House closely

On the other hand, Carney also hinted at wanting to diversify trade towards "more reliable" partners, which would include the UK and EU. Canada might send its subsidised energy to Europe, rather than the US (that might be nice!)

I’m glad to see Carney has won the Liberal party leadership. Trudeau list the trust of many Liberal voters, but carney may win them back, as well as some of the more centrist Conservatives that don’t like Pollivere.

We are in such trying times now, and need a strong leader, hopefully with a majority government.

Different stakes.

So why exactly was it you said a Canadian state governor is an emotional idiot again, if with different, higher, stakes you didn’t mention that Trump and Musk are not playing it out in their heads and are looking like fools?

The threat worked as well.
‘Senior White House trade adviser Peter Navarro has confirmed that the administration has reversed plans to double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium.’
BBC just mow.

Doug Ford is an emotional idiot who didn't play it out in his head before he acted and now he looks like a fool.

You really think Trump and Musk play things out in their heads? After the complete mess ups in Doge?

This is from a US contact:

"Several agencies which saw staff cut indiscriminately are now frantically trying to hire a lot of them back.

This is hampered somewhat by the fact that (a) they seem to be trying to contact them via emails - headed with words along the lines of “Very Important, Do Not Ignore” -

sent to official email addresses, from which they have been cut off since the day that they were unceremoniously fired: and

(b), somewhat unsurprisingly, quite a lot of those they have managed to contact have decided that they’ll take their chances trying to get jobs in the private sector, as they don’t trust the administration not to turn around and fire them again in a few months time.

On Friday RFK Jr. offered virtually all employees in his department the “opportunity to resign” in return for a $25,000 payment,

this includes world class researchers at the Centers for Disease control, and the National Institutes of Health, seems to me that there’s a great opportunity for research institutions around the world to swoop in, and snap up some amazing talent, to the benefit of health/disease research in their countries, and long lasting detriment here.

Just not as big a fool as Trump and Musk are making of themselves….

In Musk's case, a much poorer fool than he was this time last week.

growstuff Tue 11-Mar-25 20:36:49

I'd like to ask that question too Casdon. Canada has shown that it's not prepared to roll over and accept what Trump wants. It still has electricity as a bargaining chip.

How is it caving to say you plan to do something, then suspend it, pending talks? If it is caving, how many times has Trump caved in the last 50 or so days?

Canada caves.
Mark Carney, NEVER say never.

Yes, just seen that. Who'd have thought it

IMO Trump has completely wrecked Poilievre's chances, he has united Canadians against Trump and Poilievre is seen as a bit of a Trump wannabe. Hopefully, Carney will have a decisive win at the next election which I think he will call pretty quickly.

Yes -Poilievre has had very little to say about Trump recently😊.

I think it will be a very close thing though. It is Poilievre’s to loose, but Trump has really damaged his chances.

Pierre Poilievre hasn't been quiet. But he's not what msm wants to win. He had a really good chance whilst Trudeau was there but not now. And of course Trump hasn't helped the situation.

Interested to set how Carney gets on . Not a politician but a rather good brain.

Interesting times ahead

Cossy Tue 11-Mar-25 17:59:53

I don’t think “Trump is deemed “bad” and Carney “good” “

Imo Trump is an unstable madman and Carney is a fairly normal economist who won’t just roll over.

Just because Trump is deemed ‘bad’, it doesn’t make Carney good.

No, not automatically. But he is, massively, better.

Just better, if he doesn’t crash the stock markets and exacerbate wars - which seems unlikely.

foxie48 Tue 11-Mar-25 17:20:48

Doesn't mean he isn't either!

I’ve just read a news report that Trump has changed so of his threatened sanctions against Canada as Carney has said Canada will stop exporting electricity to the USA.
