This is not major news but honestly, I found this totally bizarre and not without black humour. as in Trump goes to town....

US President Donald Trump has said he will "buy a brand new Tesla" after shares in the electric car firm fell more than 15%.

Trump blamed "radical left lunatics" boycotting the firm to "attack and do harm" to Tesla owner Elon Musk

"However, stock analysts said the main reason for the poor performance of the shares was fear about Tesla meeting production targets and a drop in sales over the past year.
Trump's own economic policies on tariffs are also making investors nervous, analysts said.
US markets slumped on Monday as investors concerned about the economic effects of Trump tariffs sold shares.
This came after the US president hinted at a potential US recession, telling a TV interviewer that the world's biggest economy was in a "period of transition".
Investors fear Trump's tariffs could push up the pace of price rises and hit economic growth as firms pass on the costs of bringing goods into the country onto customers.
As part of the sell-off, shares in technology firms dropped, with Tesla stock sinking by 15.4%, while artificial intelligence (AI) chip giant Nvidia, Facebook owner Meta, Amazon, and Google-parent Alphabet also fell sharply"

On Tuesday, Trump took to his Truth Social platform trying to drum up Tesla sales, asking "Republicans, Conservatives, and all great Americans" to support Musk, who has been putting his energies into trying to slash federal government jobs

The rest of the article points out the many other reasons for drops in Tesla sales including

Trump's tariffs could also hurt the manufacturer. Tesla chief financial officer Vaibhav Taneja said in January Tesla parts sourced from Canada and Mexico would be subject to the levies and that this could hit profitability

It is being reported that Musk donated another $100 million to Trump after his Tesla stunt yesterday.

Quid pro quo seems to be the running theme in the Trump White House.

I am sorry, you always seem so knowledgeable about what happens in the US, I figured you knew this. Especially since you are always so involved in the conversation about what you think is happening in the US.

I am not at all interested in explaining economics to you. But I will say that Trumps policies have caused our stock market to drop 20% in the last 7 weeks. We have private retirement funds in the US that are fully dependent on the stock market. Anyone with an invested 401k has lost 20% of their retirement savings the last 7 weeks. After 35 years of investing for retirement, a percentage of money taken from every paycheck, 20% loss is a lot of money.

So no, not a "personal choice". This is the system we are forced into by the powers that be, and now 77 million other idiots are causing the rest of us to suffer.

Since Musks foray into politics Tesla shares have actually fallen by 56% thats a massive $800 billion. He is the pariah of Wall Street currently

Maybe Elon isn’t so clever after all, he lost $ billions buying Twitter too

Just shows how much confidence people have in this duo. I guess their ratings will go down even more if things don't work out with this deal in Ukraine

We were 7 years from retirement in my house. Not any more! If this continues, we could lose most of our retirement savings. And we don't have pensions here.

I’m sorry to be dim Iamaround but how are you losing your retirement savings so dramatically? Trump has been in for what - 2 months? Why have your savings tanked (or are tanking) so spectacularly? I don’t understand.

And why have you no pension to look forward to? Was that a lifestyle choice?

Who’s Bigly? 😉

Trump used the word because he is barely coherent most of the time. It's a p take.

It is a word in fact although it is obsolete.

Perhaps Trump had been reading Thomas Hardy 😀

Bigly Trump.

Although it is claimed he does not use the word bigly but is saying big league.

I am sorry for decent Americans like you imaround. You are living in a nightmare. I don't understand anyone who looks at what he is doing and still defends him and his cabal

Nothing I post here is made up. Sadly. Unbelievable as it is. This is what we are dealing with day in and day out.

It is like the movie Groundhog Day. It just starts over day after day. Or a bad April Fools joke thay never wants to end.

He bankrupted tons of people with his and Melanias meme coins, while they took in $100 million.

Some people lost thier life savings. And you know what? That sucks and I feel bad for them. But they have been warned for 10 years that he is a con artist and they chose to invest their life savings.

I can't feel too much sympathy to people who literally ignored the warnings and invested while the rest of us are watching our retirement accounts lose value because of their stupidity.

We were 7 years from retirement in my house. Not any more! If this continues, we could lose most of our retirement savings. And we don't have pensions here. I don't want to have to work the rest of my life because some idiot voted for Trump, but that is looking more and more likely every day.

I had a double take on Trump selling bibles so I had a check. Glory be, he is! Or promoting them at least.

imaround Wed 12-Mar-25 13:49:05

He is selling branded bibles, Trump coins and bitcoin from the White House, a car lot would be the next logical choice right? wink

I am going to laugh when his stunt doesn't work.

Though I really want MAGA to embrace the EV market. Watching those fools change their mind just because Trump days so it will be satisfying while I enjoy the benefits of increased EV usage overall. Mote public chargers would be amazing!

I love my EV!

Grandmabatty Wed 12-Mar-25 10:28:28

So Trump turns the grounds of the White House into a car lot, the position of President into a car salesman and, inadvertently I'm sure, let slip he's no longer allowed to drive. That has nothing to do with security -other presidents drove- but everything to do with his incapacity.

Just imagine - your business isn't doing well, you're losing sales and your share price is plummeting. Then, just when you think things couldn't get any worse, Trump endorses your product. Might as well turn the lights off on the way out.

Your Starship rocket blows up, that adds to Musks self destruction campaign, all EVs are very low price. I have one a Jaguar IPace, love it, costs peanuts to run, fixed price at the end of the 0% finance.

Production has ended now, don’t know what I will replace it with, not likely to be a Tesla, although they are probably the most reliable of all EVs. Chinese built cars are beginning to dominate the market, that’s a big problem for Europe, even Korea

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 11-Mar-25 16:54:49

Yes, my Son in Law has recently leased a Tesla. He said that he wouldn't buy one, but with the market for these so poor, the lease deal was unbelievably good, including lots of free electricity and other incentives.
He says that if the car is graffitied, he'd be OK with that. I might buy the " swasticar " sticker for him to put on.

vegansrock Tue 11-Mar-25 16:22:50

Two of my neighbours have Tesla’s. They both have stickers “ We bought this before we knew Musk was crazy”. Apparently there’s loads of them for sale second hand. They can’t give them away in the UK.

Well exactly, I mean he's a climate change deny person, isnt he?

imaround Tue 11-Mar-25 14:56:52

Teslas days are numbered of they don't do something about the Musk problem. Even if they do, there are so many other options in EV now. I saw yesterday that people have reported that dealerships have stopped taking them in on trade ins because the value is dropping so quickly.

Also, see "Trump attacks electric vehicles as a campaign promise"

I wish Soros would start paying me not to buy a Tesla though. wink

pascal30 Tue 11-Mar-25 14:19:08

Fortunately we have 140 new types of EV's over here with brilliant ones from Korea.. so I think Tesla is in demise.. no matter how many Trump bigly buys..

loved your comment Silverbrooks

Silverbrooks Tue 11-Mar-25 13:47:10

Surely all radical left lunatics are riding knitted bicycles and eating tofu rather than buying a Tesla and eating up the tarmac.

Usual blameshifting from Agent Orange about a car maker that was already maligned before he and Musk went completely bonkers and made the brand even more toxic than it already was.

Hands up who wants a car where the wheels fall off? Google whompy wheels.

These remarks on Reddit:

Whompy wheels. Tesla vehicles have an alarming tendency to throw their wheels off, often while in motion.

Mentioning [whompy wheels] will get you an immediate and permanent ban from Tesla and Musk fan subs. It’s a quick reward for very little effort.

But in Toddler Trump World it is the fault of radical left lunatics if the wheels fall off.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 11-Mar-25 13:46:08

😁

Jaxjacky Tue 11-Mar-25 13:43:55

I believe, even after being POTUS you’re not allowed to drive for security reasons, a mere gesture by Trump, if it actually happens

Barleyfields Tue 11-Mar-25 13:00:34

It is indeed bizarre. If Trump this will help the ailing US economy he’s every bit as dim as we always knew he was. Trump and Truss should give lessons in how to crash an economy.
