Weird rumour Trump/Commonwealth

(71 Posts)

It started appearing in parts of the press later yesterday - headlines along the lines of "Trump accepts King Charles' invitation to join Commonwealth". (as associate)

Problem is, there is no evidence from the Palace or Downing Street an invitation has ever been issued

Press this morning headlines

DM "Exposed: Secret offer King Charles is planning to make to Donald Trump that would make America ROYAL again"

FT "Trump says he would be happy for US to become ‘associate’ Commonwealth member
US president posted Sun news story that referred to a supposed ‘secret offer’ King Charles is due to extend"

Times "Trump embraces rumour of US joining Commonwealth: ‘I love King Charles’
Suggestions that Britain will invite America to be an associate member of the group of nations have been welcomed by the president"

An article in Yahoo seems to give a hint about tis origin

A member of the Royal Commonwealth Society told the Mail that the possibility of America making entry into the Commonwealth is “being discussed at the highest levels” as “a wonderful move that would symbolize Britain's close relationship with the U.S

“Donald Trump loves Britain and has great respect for the Royal Family, so we believe he would see the benefits of this. Associate membership could, hopefully, be followed by full membership, making the Commonwealth even more important as a global organization,” the person added.

My immediate reaction was "this is a fake" and a nasty one at that, what about Canada.

No comment whatsoever on th story from the Palace or Downing Street, personally I think its bad to publish rumours as unfounded as this.

I posted a week or so ago that I thought Trump wanted to annex Canada so that US would , by default become a member of the commonwealth. Gransnet would seem to have a large and influential following. hmm

imaround, I'm a lifelong British Republican,
but if it's a choice between King Charles and Mr Trump, then I'll join you in singing God Save the King with some enthusiasm.

As an American, I do not want to be part of the Commonweath. It goes against everything we have stood for for the last 250 years. However, if I have to choose against a dictator or the Commonwealth, God Save the King. grin

😂😂

No as he's only Head of State and does what the Govt. requires of him.

I Posted a week or so ago that I wondered if Trump wanted to annex Canada to be able to join the. Commonwealth. Was I really before the times? Or are reporters and other media people reading Gransnet?

I think this is nothing more than rumour. The Orange One is so obviously the opposite of the beliefs of the Commonwealth that it could never possibly happen. I would imagine our Canadian friends would have plenty to say about this idea, too. I have always said that we should look to our friends in the Commonwealth first, especially Australia, Canada and New Zealand. We still have quite a lot in common with them and they have been the first to come to our aid when we have needed it. We also have much more in common with our European neighbours. Donald Trump and his MAGA cronies want to pursue an isolationist dream. We should leave them to it.

Churchview I have a vague recollection that some bod called Oliver Cromwell led a rebellion against Charles I and it didn't end well for Charles I. I believe the monarchy was restored after a civil war and an interregnum and Charles II succeeded.

The Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland:
The Commonwealth encompassed England, Scotland, and Ireland, and Cromwell's rule as Lord Protector was a period of republican government in these three kingdoms.

I suppose Wales was just a Principality and considered part of England then. ☹

Changed my mind - why bother with those attitudes? Obvious
the USA would not be welcome at all. Also a negative would be they would probably scoop all the Commonwealths Games medals. Now that is a reason.

😁
🥇 The number one reason!

Well its gone from the news now so I think "storm in a teacup".

wibblywobblywobblebottom Mon 24-Mar-25 15:48:11

There are so many crazy stories going round. Just ignore them.

nanna8 Sun 23-Mar-25 10:43:29

Not sure about that . There are a few here that still like Trump though they are disappearing fast! Canada wouldn’t,for sure.

Lovetopaint037 Sun 23-Mar-25 09:48:19

It sounds like a nightmare. My dh says in order to be allowed to join all the Commonwealth countries have to vote for it. Can’t see Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the African countries doing that!!!

Unfortunately, the rules for joining the Commonwealth can be discarded. For example, Rwanda was admitted in 2009 despite the state of governance and human rights in Rwanda, at that time, not satisfying Commonwealth standards. The Commonwealth Heads Of Government (CHOG) may well look favourably on a recommendation from the King but why Trump would want to join is beyond me. He is busy taking away any soft power that America had.

Yes there are a few Commonwealth countries that do not fit the bill. Not all are happy with equality and gender issue are they. I think nowadays, the whole idea of Commonwealth is outdated and needs to be disbanded.

What a fool Farage is. CCP influence😄😄😄

Wyllow3 Sun 23-Mar-25 09:31:56

The only "new" news item to come out subsequently - its out of the other papers - is in Newsweek a US publication, who asked for comments from the "British prime minister's office, Farage and the Commonwealth for comment on Saturday".
Only reply was Farage, who thought it a good idea and tweeted.
"A Commonwealth with the USA would complete the alliance of the English-speaking peoples and help prevent the spread of CCP influence. I helped to launch the Royal Commonwealth Society of America in 2017"

I think the notion will quietly disappear and want it to.

Ha Indigo8 of course you're right. I meant a successful, lasting one.

I wouldn't swap Charles III for Trump or Cromwell.

Imagine fighting a war 250 years ago to remove ourselves from Crown Rule, only to have a meglomaniac be elected and return us to the crown. I would prefer the King right now to be frank.

Sometimes I think Britain would have benefited from a revolution. Then I see people like Trump and think, ah, perhaps not.

😂😂😂

He is a numpty.

Wyllow3 Sat 22-Mar-25 18:46:06

Its hilarious.

I don't know why sections of the media are pushing the rumour so hard? Embarrassing Starmer into a "confirm or deny" where there's a lose lose situation?
