Heavy handed police action at Quaker Meeting House.

The police broke down the door at the Westminster Meeting House. Apparently there were between twenty and thirty of them, some with tazers, who then went on to arrest 6 young people holding a meeting in a rented room. These were a youth group who were organising protest against what is happening in Gaza. You might agree with stopping protests designed to cause disruption but would you feel happy if this was your church, synagogue or mosque?

Really, its so sad this obsession.

Obsession ? why ?

It’s reported like 30 policemen went in against only 6 young people.

But 6 were arrested out of how many present? 60? 80? 100?

What were they arrested for?

It’s very selective reporting to say the least, inference by omission.

I would expect better from Quakers.

The young people were also concerned about climate change, according to the Quakers.

"Paul Parker, recording clerk for Quakers in Britain, said: “No-one has been arrested in a Quaker meeting house in living memory.

“This aggressive violation of our place of worship and the forceful removal of young people holding a protest group meeting clearly shows what happens when a society criminalises protest.

“Freedom of speech, assembly, and fair trials are an essential part of free public debate which underpins democracy."

This should concern us all.

Thank you Wyllow . Last year I spoke out against the police
officer who described a man as “openly Jewish” much defence from here , I find it frightening

Oreo

Also remember we only have one side of the story here.

Yes.

When I was in a multilateral nuclear disarmament group decades ago we used to meet at a Friends Meeting house. They are very anti war. Some of us were convinced our phones were being tapped!

Wyllow3 Fri 28-Mar-25 19:28:19

All we know is that they were organising a protest about what is happening in Gaza, that does in not way mean they are planning an attack on Jewish people.

But we are getting ahead of ourselves here, the group has rented space we don't know if they were Quakers or some of them were or not.

Anniebach Fri 28-Mar-25 19:25:06

The same as Quakers are very decent people. You disagree
Ilovecheese ?

Ilovecheese Fri 28-Mar-25 19:19:16

What on earth do you mean by that Anniebach ? Please explain that remark.

Anniebach Fri 28-Mar-25 19:15:33

Jews are very decent people

Ilovecheese Fri 28-Mar-25 19:11:21

Quakers are very decent people. I would believe what they are saying. The right to protest is been reduced to practically nothing, which is seems to be o.k. with some people.
Unless it is farmers protesting of course, then they can block as many roads as they like with no consequences.

Jesus himself spoke out against injustice. Jesus himself supported the cause of the despised and the rejected .

Very likely plotting disruptive acts, the police must have have insider knowledge of it.

Wyllow3 Fri 28-Mar-25 18:57:00

What crime were they committing having a meeting?

Caleo Fri 28-Mar-25 18:53:52

I believe the Quakers' account of what happened!

Wyllow3 Fri 28-Mar-25 18:39:54

Nandalot

Exactly, pascal30.

Agreed. Simple - presumably they have evidence, wait till they leave the space.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 28-Mar-25 18:34:36

If it isn’t anything else, a meeting house is a place of peace.

Jaxjacky Fri 28-Mar-25 18:32:53

They are part of Youth Demand, who alongside Stop Oil sit under an organisation called Umbrella.
They have paint sprayed near the Cenotaph, the headquarters of the Labour Party and the MoD believing in direct action plus more.
One side of the story exactly Oreo

Nandalot Fri 28-Mar-25 18:28:50

Exactly, pascal30.

pascal30 Fri 28-Mar-25 18:26:30

completely inappropriate.. this is a sacred space and they should not have defiled it. Why couldn't they wait til the group left..

Oreo Fri 28-Mar-25 18:21:21

I don’t know Churchview why the police broke the door down, perhaps if they had stood there politely and rang the bell then nobody would have answered or the group , having a tip off would have split up and sat praying.🙏 Who knows?
Sometimes the police do seem to go in mob handed at times, they’re so used to low lives.

Anniebach Fri 28-Mar-25 18:14:10

Agree with Oreo , rarely do we have both sides

Churchview Fri 28-Mar-25 18:12:13

Have you got this wrong Oreo? The group were just having a quiet meeting. It was the police who used aggressive and destructive behaviour, breaking down the door and arresting those inside. The Quakers are condemning the police action, not that of the group.
