Just seen he’s died, aged 90, just hours before his 91st birthday.

Doctor Kildare and The Thorn Birds.

So handsome back in the day.

RIP.

He was the double-crosser (spoiler alert) in an episode of Hustle a few years ago in his 70s - as ever he was superb. And yes, I think Dr Kildare was my first heartthrob too - pre-Beatles!

Absolutely fell for him in The Thorn Birds! Everyone who said he was handsome was absolutely spot on.
RIP lovely man and thank you for the pleasure you gave us.

My first pin-up! I loved Dr Kildare, and later, Thorn Birds.

Mine too!

His image was spoiled by his character's demise in The Towering Inferno. That was a desperate film.

I taught myself the Dr Kildare theme tune on the piano, much to the annoyance of my piano teacher! If only our local priest had been as handsome as Richard was in the Thornbirds I'm convinced the congregations would have filled the enormous church. RIP

MayBee70 I didn't know that

He was a very handsome man and an underrated actor. I liked him. A good life.

This might be false memory syndrome but I’m sure he came to Birmingham at the height of his popularity to do some stuff at Birmingham Rep to improve his acting skills. I always think of him as being like Scott Walker ie almost too beautiful to be real.

I absolutely adored Richard Chamberlain. He was so very handsome. So sad. RIP Richard.

BlueBelle Sun 30-Mar-25 18:30:47

I just remember him in Dr Kildare very, very handsome man I hadn’t thought of him as 90 though somehow you always see them in your mind as they were when you watched them don’t you ?

Claretjan Sun 30-Mar-25 17:40:17

Oh yes I remember the theme tune and I was only about 7 or 8! Even now the thought of it makes me quite sad and I don't know why! My mum and her friend loved Richard Chamberlain.

keepingquiet Sun 30-Mar-25 17:27:58

He was the first TV actor I ever knew- my older sisters were crazy about him. I can still remember the theme tune to Dr Kildare, and his boss Dr Gillespie played by Raymond Massey.

It makes me feel old knowing he was 90 years old.

May he rest in peace.

Absolutely gorgeous and a good actor too. My late friend adored him. She was gutted when I mentioned he was gay - I think she’d lived in hope!

Unbelievably handsome too.😊

My enduring memory of him was from his leading role in The Thorn Birds, such a great book. I don't remember priests being that handsome.

RIP Richard Chamberlin

My Mum was a very good pencil artist. She drew a picture of Richard Chamberlain on the inside back cover of my school jotter. I bet she wished she hadn't bothered because for weeks after I was bringing my school friends jotters home for her to do the same for them. RIP. Handsome man.

As everyone has said, such a handsome man.

He was in Shogun too. I enjoyed that, partly because of Richard Chamberlain.
