20 million dollars spent so far, bear in mind this is an election for the top judiciary in the state and its a swing state.

Public election of judges sounds all very well in a fair and just society, but basically it links the political and judicial wings of power.

State supreme courts have a lot of power in ways beyond what we understand as judicial.

In doing so, they can serve as safeguards against unfettered partisan gerrymandering in redistricting in order to ensure the enactment of fair electoral maps. Furthermore, state Supreme Courts have the power of final review over other election-related matters such as recounts and election contests."

They are not elected for life, it's from 4 to 15 years with mandatory retirement.
