Now Trump is targeting the U.K. with tarriffs how should Sir Keir handle a response?

So at last we know the U.K. is not special and we are being subjected to crippling tariffs. Therefore what should Sir Keir do? I’m thinking of some kind of retaliation.,

fancythat

About 186 I think! Just gone and counted.

Applying the same formula to 186 Countries, and leaving 4 out, is in my book, definitely not random. Very far from it.

They weren’t even all countries. Tariffs were imposed on two uninhabited islands, and on a US military base. Unresearched, if we are being kind.

According to UCL

Consumers in USA will be between $1800 - $5000 a year worse off.

Inflation will cause further hardship.

Other opinions from Kings College

“just chaos with no real underlying strategy, being made up largely on the hoof by a president who does not know much and is uninterested in the complexities of public policy”

fancythat

Leaving 4 Countries out, out of about 20, is not that random to me.
The rest got the same formula.

You mean 4 out of 90+ countries.

I do think people would have complained either way.
No matter what he did or didnt do.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 04-Apr-25 17:06:40

The whole point is was that it was entirely random!!

There were no tariffs for Russia, Cuba, Belarus and North Korea😄😄

But he used a formula that took no nuanced approach that you would need to make a sensible decision ( if indeed world wide tariffs can ever be deemed sensible) about each country’s exports to the USA.

fancythat Fri 04-Apr-25 16:58:10

The formula he has used is insane. Trump has applied the daft formula across the board regardless of other factors

This is what I was trying to say in some posts this morning.
It wasnt random in the slightest.
And showed no whims or favours to anyone. Which is unlike Trump.

Not so sure about the rest of your post.
We will all have to wait and see what ripples and waves it causes worldwide.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 04-Apr-25 16:44:43

Listening and reading as much as I can up until now, I’ve come away so far with a few points mostly from TRIP, but other resources.

The first is that what Trump has done is massive.

The formula he has used is insane. Trump has applied the daft formula across the board regardless of other factors , and is fatal for countries like Lesotho. The trade deficit with the USA is huge because of two factors. Firstly Lesotho is one of the poorest countries on earth and so has little or no buying power. Its exports to the USA is composed almost entirely of diamonds, and the tax imposed by the Lesotho government pays for health, education etc. Cut the exports and Lesotho is floored.

This is going to cause a world economic crises, but unlike previous ones where there were large intellectual figures in the USA willing to work with others like Gordon Brown do not exist in Trumps government

Europe will almost certainly take back power in all areas.

Investment in USA will slow almost to a halt snd slow considerably in the ROW.

Industry will not relocate to the USA as Trump is hoping because of the chaos and turmoil as well as the insecurity factor. No CEO will chance his business in the USA but will almost wait out the three years in the hope that the next administration will be less insane.

Thank you for your honesty, FGT. Makes it more like a dialogue. I do struggle after months of accusations of lying" by our politicians (justified or not) it's hard to accept a defence of Trump who does actually lie (it's so well documented) at times as never lying.

Allira Fri 04-Apr-25 15:54:36

I'm sure Putin has an understudy, a younger look-a-like but no-one could be an understudy for Trump!

It’s the shirt open to his chest hair (dyed probably) that looks a little poseur, no? He just needs a medallion….

But we digress.
Politicians may be vain but they’re elected regardless of their looks.

Hang on though, in public Macron always looks immaculate, what he does privately is his own business (and if he were vain, wouldn’t he be waxing his chest hair anyway?). I can’t actually think of any other orange, toupee wearing world leaders now, or ever - although there have allegedly been a few who have had plastic surgery, Trump and Putin included. Maybe it’s a macho man thing - publicly strong, privately full of insecurities.

Churchview Fri 04-Apr-25 15:51:01

People who voted for Trump voted for a man who mocks people with disabilities. He has an attitude uglier than any tight fitting jacket.

And no Wyllow I would not support Trump overturning the constitution. That said I doubt he will try it on but time will tell.

I like him. I admire strong men.

There's a world of difference between being strong and being a bully.

Casdon Fri 04-Apr-25 15:40:34

Macron is well groomed, which I’m all in favour of. I do like a man who looks good in a suit. Do you think he wears fake tan or has a toupee, if so he disguises both well?

Wyllow3 Fri 04-Apr-25 15:39:41

Ok, thank you.

Would you support him overturning the constitution and running for a third time?

By the way - the Secret Service was responsible for Security the day Trump was shot at

"The director of the Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, faced bipartisan calls for her resignation when she testified before the United States House Committee on Oversight and Accountability on July 22; she stepped down the following day."

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 04-Apr-25 15:37:05

And vanity? Affects many.
See Macron?
It’s not a crime. Maybe not attractive to be vain but many people are so inclined on the world stage, and not.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 04-Apr-25 15:35:21

He’s snug in his jackets though.

Casdon Fri 04-Apr-25 15:32:19

Just a point of accuracy FriedGreenTomatoes2. David Lammy wasn’t coating himself in bright orange last time I looked, and he doesn’t wear a toupee. Only vain men pretend to be something they aren’t.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 04-Apr-25 15:25:44

Okay Wyllow you’ve worn me down.

Supporting means "I believe this person is the best option, because of.....however I agree with x,y,z, and am not happy with a,b,c - a real world approach to politicians in a democracy

Here goes:
I believe this person is the best option because Biden wasn’t up to it, his minders lied and Kamala was out of her depth with her word salads. However I agree he is something of a ‘big babboon’ (*PoliticsNerd*) and a ‘Giant Wotsit’ (*Casdon*) but then again Lammy isn’t exactly a male model either. We can be deceived by judging books by their cover. Insults can be somewhat childish really.

However (I’m up to the a,b,c bit) I’m not happy that Trump has literally had to fight court cases mischievously generated by the Democrats to get this far and had to sustain a sniper attack at a rally, security (such as it was) provided by said Democrats. I’m not happy that Trump is egotistical, but hey compared to some politicians and their finagling malpractices being exposed I can accept that, plus his locker room talk (a few men, by no means many, indulge in this misogynistic ‘banter’ amongst fellow braves if they think they’re in a safe place to indulge).

Overall?
I like him. I admire strong men.
Sorry.

I think he will do good by America but only time will tell.

I know Allira. Impressive isn’t he? 😁
Wyllow no point at all. Let’s see where we are in one year.

Seems Lammy is going to ensure the interests of the British people. Well, that will be a first.
No Chagos buy off then?
No giant new Chinese embassy in London?

I've just been informed it was on autocue, FGT2

wudd haff ter bee fer nom in ull.

Well done Mr Trump 👏

To me the difference between supporting someone and blindly/cultish following is as follows:

Supporting means "I believe this person is the best option, because of.....however I agree with x,y,z, and am not happy with a,b,c - a real world approach to politicians in a democracy

A cult following is "I support this person whatever they do, whatever harm they do, and most of all - I will ignore that which I call others out for.
