So at last we know the U.K. is not special and we are being subjected to crippling tariffs. Therefore what should Sir Keir do? I’m thinking of some kind of retaliation.,

He finally left the golf course long enough to post on Social Media. He is doubling down on tariffs.

Experts are expecting a 1987 Black Monday like sell off tomorrow.

I have no idea at this point. Musk isn't a fan either, so not him.

He thinks he is The World's Best Business Man, so maybe no one?

Wyllow3 Mon 07-Apr-25 00:22:29

Who is Trump getting his financial advice from, ie the tariff board and so on?

The billionaires aren't happy right now. Which is good news honestly. Money talks with these people.

I am watching to see what happens when futures opens tonight. Crypto has lost tens of millions today.

So am I. I have grandchildren growing up there. Brought my kids up in the US. All of this is so disheartening to witness.

Kafkaesque

No need to apologise, as you are not alone.

My apologies, I didn't mean to sound so pessimistic but I'm rather horrified daily by what unfolds in the news. I know people will carry on the good fight.

I wonder if it is time to accept the right wing has won. The world is more polluted than can ever be reversed. Climate change is unstoppable. Hard fought for rights have been lost. The poor get poorer as the rich gets richer. It's all quite devastating.

Human history proves that the pendulum swings back and forth.

It’s not so much about who is in charge now as it is the damage that will have to be undone when they are “done”. Trump and Musk understand this. The right-winged fanatics who support them in the US may or may not understand. The goal domestically was to set back the gains anyone not a white male. I am not sure Trump cares so much whether or not his trade and international policy is “successful”.

“President Biden's climate change policy focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, aiming for a net-zero economy by 2050, and includes initiatives like the Inflation Reduction Act, rejoining the Paris Agreement, and investing in clean energy.

(Google check)

“Mr. Trump has gutted federal climate efforts, rolled back regulations aimed at limiting pollution and given a major boost to the fossil fuel industry.
He is abandoning efforts to reduce global warming, even as the world has reached record levels of heat that scientists say is driven largely by the burning of fossil fuels”

I havent seen any change of stance either here or in the US on climate change?
Must have passed me by somehow.

Perhaps the outcome of the right winning this time will be the catalyst to get more people involved in politics and encourage more people to vote. 33% of Americans didn't vote in the last election. If Trump's policies have sufficient negative impact perhaps things will change. I do hope so.

Starmer will have to aid any transition IF NEEDED.

Companies can stand the disruption for a few weeks until workable tarrifs are negotiated, there should be preparations but no action yet.
This can’t be a repeat of the Covid compensation debacle.

Wyllow3 Sun 06-Apr-25 20:38:08

I hear and respect your concerns, Luminance. People haven't given up.

The likes of Trump and others may have declared there is no such thing as climate change, and try to turn the clock back as regards welfare and rights concerns, and its dispiriting, but others will fight back - probably those younger than I am!

This too shall pass.

"More than 50 countries have contacted Trump to try to negotiate after he announced sweeping tariffs this week the US's National Economic Council director, Kevin Hassett, says.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer says the world as we knew it has gone". He says he’ll keep pushing for an economic deal with the US to avoid some of the tariffs, but also suggests the government could step in to protect British interests

“We stand ready to use industrial policy to help shelter British business from the storm,” he writes in the Sunday Telegraph
, external
.
“Some people may feel uncomfortable about this – the idea the state should intervene directly to shape the market has often been derided,” he says.

“But we simply cannot cling on to old sentiments when the world is turning this fast.”

He also says the UK will work to strengthen alliances and cut trade barriers with other countries.

I now know why I am reading and posting on N & P threads less and less.

These are not the normal run of N & P posters, GG3, which you can usually read quite safely, and mostly post without getting your ears pierced by raucous ranting.

For some reason, the thread is being attacked by people who enjoy disrupting discussions that are being carried out without anyone being verbally abused. Heaven knows why - perhaps they don't know how to do anything else except scream and shout like three-year-olds in a tantrum?

Allira Sun 06-Apr-25 16:52:33

Goodness, I've been doing some gardening and enjoying the sunshine and have missed all this!
We don't need this, posters are having polite discussions. Please go away.
