Dan Norris has been arrested and suspended from the Labour Party following rape and child sex allegations

Bit of a shock to find Dan Norris my MP has been arrested and suspended from the Labour Party following allegations of rape and child sex offences. I thought it was dishonest to take two salaries, one as WECA Mayor and one as an MP. Constituents complained he didn’t reply to them when they wrote to him, but this is something else if true. He is an NSPCC Child Protection Officer as well.

What I find frightening is that these perverts walk amongst us often with a veneer of respectability.

Not all burglars wear stripy tops and carry bags of swag.

Mogg has cultivated a look and a personna for example. What lies beneath is not pleasant.

There was minimising and doubt expressed when I mentioned the allegations against Brendan Cox, that wasn't party political but it was political.

I must be missing something. I’ve not seen conclusions being jumped to, just a discussion on the complexity of the in estigations

Same here. 🤔

I really don't think his political party comes into it, FGT.

Abhorrent wherever you find it - dont try to make "political capital" out of it.

I agree, but I’m certain there would have been political capital made out of it had the accused been a Tory.
We have seen that endlessly on GN.

Definitely, the Tories bad Labour and Lib Dem’s good mantra is common in GN

No one tried to defend or cover up Mike Amesbury nor approved of the members of the WhatsApp group when Health minister Andrew Gwynne was sacked and 3 councillors resigned over messages in that group.

If you re-read the Mike Amesbury thread you can see definite suggestions he "got off lightly" because he was Labour - making "political capital" out of it.

We don’t know if Dan Norris has committed anything yet. Everyone is jumping to conclusions. It was seeing him accused of these allegations that came as a shock.

Absolutely correct FriedGreenTomatoes2. The excellent likable head teacher at my children’s primary school was suspended during an investigation into ‘historical’ ie 7 years ago from two separate children. One had made allegations 7 years earlier. Investigation found no independent evidence to support the allegations. He was then promoted head at our school. No one was aware of the earlier allegations. It caused a huge split with parents involved in this area of work accused of being obsessive who see it everywhere.
Long story short - he was off the hook. Promoted to bigger school. After he left our school several children made allegations. They said they couldn’t speak earlier due to the support the parents gave him.

petra Sun 06-Apr-25 13:47:29

Then we have thousands? who have never technically committed an offence on children.
Some years ago my daughter was befriended by a man at the school gates. He told her he was putting together a summer camp for children.
They made an arrangement to meet to discuss the details.
My daughter asked me to come along as she knows my perv alert is honed to perfection.
Every bell rung loud and clear.
I told her we were going to the police to see if we could get some more information on him: we did.
The police officer told us that they were very aware of him but he hadn’t done anything that warranted being asked to attend the police station.

I’m not sure who you are referring to, but actually many of us, regardless of political persuasion, have taken a consistent line on offences by politicians. It makes no difference who it is, if they have broken the law they deserve what punishment they are due.

Many of us do, and believe that the offence deserves punishment.
But reading GN, no one could be unaware that the supporters of one party are always keen to point out the faults of the other party.

Luckygirl3 Sun 06-Apr-25 13:31:46

It is not a fault of the vetting - if his DBS checks showed up clear then there is no way anyone could possibly know that he was later going to be charged with such awful offences.

The only remotely good thing in this sordid mess is that he saw off the ghastly J R-M.

Yep 👍

You don’t have to look weird to be an alleged sex offender, many of them hide behind a cloak of respectability.

This isn’t about Jacob Rees Mogg although I did find him to be a good constituency MP. Equally I found Dan Norris to be a good constituency MP many years ago when he was MP for Wansdyke before the boundaries were altered.

I have not, however, approved of Dan Norris as WECA mayor with massive spending on controversial schemes which I won’t go into. He was rapped over the knuckles for spending £10,000 of tax payers money for sticking a giant photo of himself and his dog on the side of a double decker bus. I expect the papers will dig out all the dirt they can. It was just such a shock that he has been accused of these alleged offences. It was an equally shock a few years back when my GP was sent to jail for pornographic images of children on his computer.

These are people in a high position of trust and it makes you feel tainted. The LP have done the right thing in immediately suspending Norris. This could go on for months so who is going to represent us his constituents, although he hasn’t been answering email for months?

Sorry I posted that too soon. I also meant to answer your last question. We had a similar situation here in Mendip, when our MP (Warburton) was suspended. We were unrepresented for over a year, but his office still dealt with queries - apparently, though I don't have personal experience of that. It seems that, until he either steps down as an MP, or is found guilty of an offence, he is allowed to be an Independent and so should still represent you over the border. It wasn't satisfactory for us though and Warburton eventually resigned. We now have our second LibDem MP (due to the boundary changes) since that happened.

As someone who lives just over the border, in Mendip, I absoutely agree with your points. As a local councillor, he was impressive and latterly as MP for Wansdyke, but he let everyone down badly with the whole WECA thing. I know you don't want to go into 'those schemes' but they were and are ridiculous.

As regards guilt I believe that there must be substantial evidence before an arrest was made, enough to be suspended, but we can't say he is guilty of all or part of the allegations until due process.

What I really hope for all is that it's dealt with as soon as possible. I presume the next step is appearing before magistrates and entering pleas.

Cossy why are you angry and shocked,You believe him guilty of allegations made ?

You have to be a bit of a weirdo to want to be a politician these days. Nothing surprises me about any of them.

Frightening c.v. if allegations are true.
Perfect access to children.

Such a shame he won his seat by beating Jacob Rees Mogg by 5,000 votes. JRM is a perfect gentleman. Courteous and honourable. One of the few Tories I really do like.

I find JRM arrogant beyond belief and not really at all part of the real world.

I’m really angry and shocked at Dan Norris, and if found guilty, hope they throw the book at him!

It’s sickens me when anyone abuses their positions to their own ends, irrespective of which party they represent.

Churchview Sun 06-Apr-25 09:11:31

Rees Mogg. Pro blood sports, "completely against" abortion even in cases of rape and incest (whilst personally profiting from companies that make abortion pills), votes against any initiative to support the poorest in society, voted against provision of school dinners during holiday time to help the poorest children during covid, blamed Grenfell victims, blamed Covid victims, horizontal in parliament and refers to the electorate as 'pot plants'.

Dan Norris innocent until proven guilty.
Rees Mogg has shown us who he is already.
