Apple dont just ship all their I phones from China to the USA. Just done aa check. They distribute them to centres world wide including the UK.

the same for Mac books etc

But people do need to replace phones occasionally. My 12 year old phone is on its last legs and beginning to irritate me because it's so slow and has hardly any battery life left. It's not compatible with many useful apps.

Just realised that mine is a Samsung and I have my eye on another Samsung, which is made in Vietnam or India, but probably uses some Chinese-made components. I wonder how that would work, if I were buying from the US.

90% of Apple iPhones are assembled in China and then shipped back to the US. In the US the iPhone 16 ranges from $800 to $1100 depending on storage.

So add on 145% tariff US consumers will be fuming ...

I can't see Apple taking the hit. Their shares have nose-dived.

In the United States, there are an estimated 155 million iPhone users as of 2024. Is there a need for even more phones?

I think it was decided, either earlier on this thread, or another thread that the figure is 4%. Some were saying lower.

The 4% was exports to the USA as a proportion of China's GDP, (Gross Domestic Product) that is a 4% is the proportion of everything China produces that goes to the USA. This includes Hong Kong as well.

Just saw the EU is going to allow China's electric vehicles as a response to Trump. I have not researched this yet.

Our son’s brother-in-law recently went to China on business and visited the BYD factory which manufactures electric cars. He was absolutely blown away by it, the site is bigger than San Francisco.

I think it is difficult for most people, even in the US, to understand how many products sold in the US is made in China. There is no way we can just not buy Chinese made goods on such a large scale without being given time to actually move manufacturing to the US. Even if he fast tracks building regulations, which he will and put people at risk, we would not be able to replace most of our goods in less than 2 years.

Until then, we are at the whim of a dictator and forced to pay 145% for goods we cant make here currently.

Depends what sellers want to price in. Whether they want to pass on the full extra cost. or not.

Plus some goods will only be part made from China.

All not good though.

How does that work when China imports 3 times as much into the US as the US exports to China.

China has a huge internal market that could be expanded with the right measures, there are also other overseas markets that could be expanded. Yes, China would take hit, but they have done it before and bounced back. The Chinese government does not have to worry about its electorate and being driven out of government

China also owns arounf $800billion Us Treasury Bonds. A large sell off of those, could cause major problems for the USA.

In addition what China exports mainly from the USA is basic food stuffs - wheat, corn and soy. There are plenty of alternative sources for those crops.

The USA needs its high tech imports from China far more than China needs to sell to them, and it has no need to buy from the USA

Russia exports over $3bn to USA every year.

Sanctions relate to political actions.

The two are apples and pears and are not related.

I expected some imports, in 2020 it was over $ 25bn
The UK also has some imports around £500m last year that’s pretty much in proportion to US trade with Russia
The UK tariff on Russian goods is 35%

Tariffs and sanctions both control goods being traded, there is little point having tariffs if sanctions prevent trade

Many other countries have little or no restrictions
