Saying " France is laughing at us" isn't really helping anybody.
I agree, it's probably not helping. However, I've been in France nearly a month now, and on a couple of occasions have been told by French people that the migrants in France want to reach UK shores because we are considered to be more generous.

We’ve had 2 big hotels taken over round here Shinamae.
The Cresta Court in Altrincham and Mersey Farm up the road from us, both 5 miles away and reported in our local newspaper.

Oh just a tiny point before I get on with my day.....No hotels have been " taken over"

The owners have seen the dollar signs and grabbed the money.

Do you never get ever so slightly weary or churning out this stuff OP?

France is laughing at us.....how does that work then?

I think it's a big mess and it's terrifying. The dam will burst and instead of thoughtful, well resourced solutions we will have violence and hatred.

I totally agree with what FGT says and she is as entitled to her opinion as you are
You really need an explanation as to why France would be laughing at us seriously??
So come on then, what is your solution thoughtful and sourced?
And tell me where are all these thousands of people going to live?

As I said , it's a mess. It would be good to have effective government, plans, a properly resourced and professional Home Office on board.

Saying " France is laughing at us" isn't really helping anybody.

I didn’t say it to “help anybody”
And can you please answer my question as to where all these people are going to be housed?

When in the EU we were signatories to the Dublin agreement which meant we could send illegal migrants back. Also part of the treaty was that we could send back EU citizens who came here with no job. We never bothered to do any of that.

There doesn't seem to be a joined up approach to border controls in the EU, individual countries seem to implement their own strategies to appease their citizens. The eastern bloc, Hungary for example, steadfastly refused to take migrants from the outset. So it's to a handful of countries migrants tend to go. When certain areas perceive they are taking disproportionate numbers feeling they are swamped it's bound to cause discontent. I remember a while back, Italy felt they were floundering with such a problem when migrants tried to cross the border their border with France who wouldn't accept them, like us Italy were annoyed with their neighbour. It does seem a case of individual countries implementing their own border controls to stem the flow more than ever lately.

I thought I read somewhere that Italy is sending illegal immigrants to Albania.

My understanding is that Italy has an agreement with Albania (for which Italy has paid c800,000 Euros) to send 3000 asylum seekers from countries which are deemed to be safe.

Casdon Sun 13-Apr-25 10:09:32

If we stopped paying France now to help control the number of boats crossing the channel we would have unfettered migration. Thousands of migrants every day, increasing as the gangs realised there was no deterrent. It seems some can’t see beyond the noses on the end of their faces.

I think you'll find that attitudes towards the migrants have now changed in many EU countries too. They don't want terrorist threats or overwhelmed asylum systems, and are therefore reintroducing their own border controls. The UK is not tough enough.
The EU is also discussing taking the problem offshore, that is removing it as faraway as possible. Sound familiar? So, by rejoining the EU, there would be no point thinking that the problem might be dealt with in a joined up manner. It's a challenge for everyone, and more and more every nation is doing their own thing.

Serious question
Where are the thousands of these people who have come over since January going to be housed?
In my region, we have very little social housing even the very expensive private lets are few and far between
People languishing on social housing lists for years and years 🤷‍♀️

How would being in the EU stop illegal migrants crossing?

If Britain is where they want to be then why would they stay in France or anywhere else.

Its a genuine question not an argument.

I’d like to know the answer to that too.

vegansrock Sun 13-Apr-25 09:50:18

The only long term way to stop migration from poor countries is to help improve conditions in those countries.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 13-Apr-25 09:49:18

Rejoining the EU would mean the Euro currency. I don’t think this will happen do you … really? We’ve moved on.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 13-Apr-25 09:48:02

For a nation to be sovereign it must be able to control its own borders and pay its way. The UK fails on both counts. The tragedy that resulted from leaving the EU was that our governments were too spineless and cowardly to take the freedoms that leaving the EU gave us and use them to make the country prosper.

Now we’ve got Trump to consider Starmer has to pick a horse.

And the best way to do this would be to rejoin the EU.

This was always going to be a major issue for the U.K. post-Brexit - but many of us didn’t listen.

Maybe when 16 and 17 years old are able to vote that might happen Whitewavemark.. there's certainly a move towards rejoining amongst a large part of the population now.. though I fear renegotiating won't be simple..

Yes.

I have just seen them all disembarking and wrapping themselves in lovely warm blankets that are handed to them.

Smash the Gangs and Stop The Boats are slogans we frequently see on road signs and fences.

Over 600 migrants (all men) arrived just yesterday! All will be needing beds, food, clothing. Some will need doctors and dentists.

If we stopped paying the French (they’re coming every day anyway) that money could go some way to mitigating this pressure on our taxpayer money, don’t you think?

We don’t (yet) have a credible deterrent. Tweaking around the edges won’t cut it now. Still they come, hundreds every day. I don’t care what the numbers are in Europe. We are an island surrounded by water. Surely that ought to be made to work in our favour … somehow?

“Smash the Gangs” is just a nonsense. All experts agree. It’s a multi-BILLION pound business now. Cut one route and another easily takes its place, apparently.
