Is it time to stop paying £££s millions to the French?

Over 600 migrants (all men) arrived just yesterday! All will be needing beds, food, clothing. Some will need doctors and dentists.

If we stopped paying the French (they’re coming every day anyway) that money could go some way to mitigating this pressure on our taxpayer money, don’t you think?

We don’t (yet) have a credible deterrent. Tweaking around the edges won’t cut it now. Still they come, hundreds every day. I don’t care what the numbers are in Europe. We are an island surrounded by water. Surely that ought to be made to work in our favour … somehow?

“Smash the Gangs” is just a nonsense. All experts agree. It’s a multi-BILLION pound business now. Cut one route and another easily takes its place, apparently.

ID Cards are the way forward

The “African guys” as I said came from Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Mali as I said. And yes, the French can be just as racist as the Brits.
Absolutely, GoldenCity. When we were buying one of our properties in Northern Brittany, 2002, the notaire said to us, "We don't mind you, (white British), coming here, it's "les noirs" we don't want". And this was a lawyer working for the French government!

We’ve had 2 big hotels taken over round here Shinamae.
The Cresta Court in Altrincham and Mersey Farm up the road from us, both 5 miles away and reported in our local newspaper.

Oh just a tiny point before I get on with my day.....No hotels have been " taken over"

The owners have seen the dollar signs and grabbed the money.

Amounts to the same thing really.
Locals cannot book the Cresta Court any more as a wedding venue.

Just a pop of local knowledge here folks....for what it's worth.

Cresta Court is a large ,rather dated place and the owners were happy enough to sell it on.

I don't think there was a large queue of people clamouring to book it as wedding venue.

Still if it fits the relentless racist narritive, as you wish.

The hotel we had booked in the London area was not dated.

Saying that there is more suitable accommodation than 4* hotels with swimming pools and spas, like the one were would have gone to, is not racist.

It is saying that there is more suitable accommodation but people seem to think that barracks and ex-military housing is not decent enough.

Cresta Court Hotel review September 2024:
Stayed here for one night after spending an evening in Manchester City Centre. It's great to see that this hotel is currently undergoing a refurbishment.

So at least it was refurbished in readiness to take asylum seekers.

There is nothing that is simple about this problem. And every government for decades has struggled with this.

They are offered blankets, not because we are delighted about the migrant situation, but because they are cold frightened fellow human beings and we are a civilised nation.

Saying " France is laughing at us" isn't really helping anybody.
I agree, it's probably not helping. However, I've been in France nearly a month now, and on a couple of occasions have been told by French people that the migrants in France want to reach UK shores because we are considered to be more generous.

This, and I stand by what I said about France laughing at us..

Shinamae you are correct. Most countries are laughing at us!
My Tanzanian friend tells me this, we have relatives in Germany and Australia, friends who have moved to Spain, former neighbours who returned to Czech Republic, all say the same. We are a laughing stock.

They are not cold and frightened. If you saw the footage this morning they are grinning and laughing. Not frightened at all.

glasshalgfullagain it is not racist to be concerned about who is entering the UK and their reasons for doing so.

On the news just now it said the number of boat people arriving since January is now over 6,000! What happened to all Labour’s promises to smash the gangs and stop the boats?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 13-Apr-25 18:33:21

Just look at Sweden. Such a mess, too liberal, so many terrorist incidents.

They found it easier to say than to do.

glasshalffullagain Sun 13-Apr-25 18:34:24

As I said I am concerned. It's an almighty mess. My local knowledge though, of some use here. Nobody has stopped people from having a wedding at Cresta Court. I went years ago, it was dated then.
Its a large building , must be costly to run and the owners decided to go with a steady income stream.

Nobody is " taking over " this place as suggested by OP. Its all about money.

Feel free to jump in if you know more? I'm all ears.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 13-Apr-25 18:34:28

“Stop the Boats”was Sunak.
“Smash the Gangs” is Cooper.

Neither is a deterrent.

.

Vegansrock.

Umm. Maybe if these young men in their smart new trainers and outfits plus their expensive mobile phones stayed in their own countries and fought/endevoured to right the wrongs there then the counties might improve??

I agree with you glasshalfullagain, I’m also at a loss as to why you were deleted.

Someone must have pushed the ‘report’ button.
Not me.

I'm happy enough but then again I'm not a small minded person who hates others?

The kind people from local Churches and mosques are happy to help.

Yes.
It was rather in need, apparently.

Presumably the hotel didn't have to fund the refurbishment?

I don’t ‘hate’ anyone. An emotive word that you assign willy-nilly for some strange reason.

Yes, the Government requisitions hotels. They are closed to the general public.

Requisition: an official order laying claim to the use of property or materials.
So it is grammatically correct.

glasshalffullagain Sun 13-Apr-25 18:42:40

I'm not entirely sure what your point is? It was clean and adequate and dated.

The owners sold it as a going concern.

Because they wanted money?
