Is it time to stop paying £££s millions to the French?

Over 600 migrants (all men) arrived just yesterday! All will be needing beds, food, clothing. Some will need doctors and dentists.

If we stopped paying the French (they’re coming every day anyway) that money could go some way to mitigating this pressure on our taxpayer money, don’t you think?

We don’t (yet) have a credible deterrent. Tweaking around the edges won’t cut it now. Still they come, hundreds every day. I don’t care what the numbers are in Europe. We are an island surrounded by water. Surely that ought to be made to work in our favour … somehow?

“Smash the Gangs” is just a nonsense. All experts agree. It’s a multi-BILLION pound business now. Cut one route and another easily takes its place, apparently.

but would it (other considerations aside) be viable? Nightingale hospitals were set up in buildings already there. The expense of ferrying food and all other supplies over enormous (lots of stuff in press about costs of overhwlemng boats running for Orkneys inhabitants) so - need to build accommodation,

find workers to prepared to supervise without any local police back up supply boats not running in foul weather, costs and time of taking assessment staff fully equipped to this island..

All excellent pints Wyllow thanks

Good reasoning Wyllow. Pointing out aspects I hadn’t considered. Probably why it hasn’t been done.

Back to the drawing board.

If only the combined wisdom in gransnet could come up with some solutions to what we all acknowledge to be a challenge

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Mon 14-Apr-25 20:31:05

I don’t know. What an unholy mess.

Yes it is.

It’s too easy to polarise, to defend our own views to the extent constructive debate is impossible. In todays world with Mr T setting such a belligerent rude style maybe we could set a better tone 😇🌞

I think you need to look a little closer to home for really rude language.

Who was it who called the Conservatives “scum” and “vile” and even worse names that I can’t be bothered to look up now. Even MPs in her own party said they would never use language like AR used.

It is very easy to say that the migrant situation is problematical, but less easy to come up with a solution.

I think we all agree that there needs to be humanity in that solution.

Just over 700 irregular migrants arrived in Dover today, surpassing the daily high total a few days ago.

“A record day for small boat crossings”.

Criminal networks around the world raking in eye watering amounts of money. The gangs are highly professional now. Some migrants ‘get a discount’ if they post their successful arrival on TikTok.

Whatever critics said about Rwanda the project (or similar) ought to have been given a chance for say 3 months and in the interim been sourcing an alternative.

No more money for France! I just don’t get it!

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 15-Apr-25 16:22:13

We have become desensitised to this now to a large extent.
We just shrug because we expect it now.

70 people on just one craft today…. 🤷‍♀️

If enough keep coming Rwanda might be back on the options list.

No, it won’t.

No, it won’t.

Realistically, if processing centers were set up in France to allow the genuine Assylum seekers into the UK, then all could be picked up and returned there.

With no point getting into a boat if you were going straight back, no market for gangs.

labour are very, very quiet the past few days. Another 700 illegal immigrants arrived today and if I heard correctly it costs £145 per person per night to accommodate them. That is truly shocking considering our pensioners had their winter fuel allowance taken from them.

How come before they left France (a safe country) they were living in tents and now they are mostly in 4* accommodation? We should stop this now. No more allowed in and those who are already here should be put in tents instead of hotels.

It’s the parliamentary recess for Easter Primrose53?

But they’ve got time to send millions to Sudan.

Casdon Tue 15-Apr-25 21:31:31

So are you saying they haven’t been very, very quiet after all? The Sudan announcement was approved and planned in advance I’m sure. I think what you mean is that they haven’t made any announcements you wanted them to, which isn’t the same thing.

Primrose53 have you seen the plight of the people in Sudan, mostly women and children?

Where is your humanity?

Wyllow3 Wed 16-Apr-25 00:10:31

"People in Sudan are facing rampant violations of human rights and humanitarian law resulting in mass civilian casualties, gender-based violence, and an internet shutdown that makes it impossible to deliver humanitarian aid to millions of civilians trying to survive without food or water."

Amnesty. Women are being raped.

Do you think it is some sort of reparations for past wrongs and colonialism that makes the UK so welcoming to the boat people in a way that other nations don’t ? Some sort of collective guilt? In which case they should look carefully at who is coming and whether they do come from former colonies or are just freeloaders. It would rule out most Europeans for a start.

I think it more complicated, inasmuch as some of those colonies became part of the Commonwealth with different immigration laws but thats going back quite a bit now. And we invited the Windrush generation over to do essential jobs.

Sudan was a French colony but refugees are scattered over Europe. It's a terrible tragedy but in terms of arrivals most Sudanese are felling to adjacent countries. But it is one clear example where helping people where they are means less try to leave, but I fear that only military peacekeeping would have any effect.
