I think the phrase is 'died by suicide' ...as FGT said it's not a criminal offence so a crime hasn't been committed. I only understood terminology recently.

Yes it is always very sad to hear that someone has committed suicide. Poor woman. I have always thought that financial literacy is very important, especially as nowadays it is more common to have a mortgage and be involved in Inheritance Tax, more than it was for previous generations. There are very few places where people can go to get free advice and many feel a shame having to ask. Sometimes hearing stories like this it becomes obvious that the person involved was given bad advice in the first place.
It’s worth remembering that even those involved in high finance get it wrong at times.

It's always tragic when somebody commits suicide. However, the failures of the benefits system aren't the whole story here. Having a mortgage does not make people ineligible for Universal Credit, although having an income from lodgers would probably have affected her eligibility. She could also have claimed Support for Mortgage Interest for two years.

At the end of the two years, she would probably have had to sell the house and rent. There is an option for the house to be bought and rented back to the original owner. Unfortunately, many people find themselves in this situation and it's not easy to think clearly when you're in it.

I just googled her name Franski and read some of the newspaper articles.

We have had several suicides in our family over the years, the guilt those feel who are left behind and believe they should/could have done more

I'd just like to mention Citizens Advice Bureau where people can get support with finding out what benefits they may be entitled to and with applying for them.
If you know anyone needing help with this please do suggest CAB.
They deal with this all the time and know exactly what's needed to represent a person's situation effectively.

Our benefits 'system' is often so heartless.

RIP Kathleen, I am sorry you felt this bad, I don't understand people who say I would do this I would sell, no one could have known your state of mind.
I am sorry for the daughter too.

I know of someone,who works on the quiet for cash and claims that a covid injection has permanently disabled him and claims benefits .
He's the partner of my friend's daughter .
I think that he has some very suspicious connections .
My friend is disgusted by him.,but has her daughter to consider as they have several children together.
Then - there was a lady like Kathleen -so deserving of benefits and denied them.
It makes me very angry .

So very fraught and stressful. Mortgage was interest only and rates went up.
I’d have sold.
Maybe nothing much over. But maybe some? I’d then lived with daughter as offered. You can’t buy peace of mind.

We never know what goes on in other people's lives, so very sad. 💐

I hope Kathleen’s daughter gets some support through this. Apparently she had offered to have Kathleen live with her once mortgage payments had risen. Clearly very difficult times for some. Her daughter must be suffering just now.

It's a sad story, but among the 14 million people living in poverty in the UK there are probably thousands like her.
