ā€œStarmer to rent homes for migrants." No, no. The taxpayer is renting them!

He’s asking landlords to house migrants and giving them a 5 year guarantee of income. So, putting them (in the north probably as we’re a bit cheaper up here) in the middle of communities. Lads we know nothing about. What could possibly go wrong? šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

I’m not sure this is the answer to the migration problem we have. What do you think?

Allira Sat 26-Apr-25 19:27:22

It's just that every time the subject of illegal immigration comes up for discussion posts appear proclaiming such hatred! so that the subject can not be discussed in a rational way.

Then other posters pop up saying "My relative/DH/SIL/DN is from overseas, is here legally and works hard in the NHS/Care home/cleans my windows etc which is, in fact, a complete non-sequitur because no-one is discussing legal migration.

Anyway, it's pointless trying to discuss this on Gransnet.
I'm out.

Stopping the boats has always seemed an impossible task. We aren’t the only country in Europe trying to deal with the endless supply of desperate people seeking sanctuary or even a better life. If there were solutions I’m sure France, Germany. Greece, Italy, Denmark etc etc would have found them.
Sorry for appearing negative but I’m being realistic.
It needs international solutions and ā€˜smashing the gangsā€ has to be attempted. It’s such a lucrative trade by unscrupulous people, I wish I - or preferably various governments had answers.
I know our public services and housing are overwhelmed. The reality is the majority applying are given settled status. Being angry and anxious won’t change it. Trumps tariffs won’t help either
We need to put significant resources into processing and deporting . I’d like to see the criminal justice system more inclined to deport criminals, especially those convicted of violence and sexual offences. The human rights of the honest population should top those of violent offenders.
Also tighten up the nonsense of organised crime applying for student loans illegally, get onto fraudsters exploiting our benefits system,

I am looking forward to seeing the 1.5 million houses promised by our Angela ………

rafichagran Sat 26-Apr-25 17:03:09

Agree Spabbygirl that no goverment have increased the housing stock and yes we are paying the price.

spabbygirl Sat 26-Apr-25 16:57:02

this gov't are deporting people but assessing them does take time its not a quick process. I agree with whoever said no gov't has increased the housing stock for years and we're paying the price of that.

Other than assess people in Calais, which I think would be a good idea, I don't see how any gov't can stop the small boats, you have to be pretty determined to risk your life in one of them anyway.

There must be a deterrent to prevent migrants from heading here despite passing through umpteen safe European countries.

This plan will be a carrot surely?

Also I can’t see many landlords being keen on this idea, when they could rent out their properties to tenants who have been properly vetted by the letting agent.

Many landlords in Scotland (and l think England too) rent houses to local authorities, this saves rental agent fees, guarantees rent even if house is empty/tenant doesn't pay, and the LA is responsible for returning the house in the condition it was in when they took it on. It tends to be a far better deal than rental agents offer.

rafichagran Sat 26-Apr-25 16:51:01

I have misinterpreted no arguments the original post stated and I quote "Lads we know nothing about. What could possibly go wrong?"šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø
Why pick on migrant lads, our home grown louts did not do us proud when they rioted after Southport.
The language used was inflammatory.

The truth is not virtual signalling, migrants who are legally here and have families have as much right to accomadation as anyone else,
Did Starmer say they should jump the queue?
Alot of migrants have the correct paper work, the work, and they are productive members of society yet some people lump them as people just looking for benefits. Not true.

No-one is arguing with that rafichagran.

Of course legal migrants who have a right go be here and are productive members of society are welcome.
I think you are misinterpreting the arguments.

If they need Council or Housing Association accommodation, then of course they are entitled to go on the waiting list liks others who are desperately hoping for accommodation.

However, the legal immigrants who are part of our family are working and able to afford private rental or have bought homes.

I think they will, JenniferEccles, because they will be sure the rent will be paid!

Another thread where posters are virtue signalling and calling anyone who points out the realities for many families in Britain today heartless, whilst at the same time putting their heads in the sand and ignoring the plight of desperate families who have been waiting months or even years for decent accommodation, a place to bring up their children in clean, safe housing.

Well put Allira

Once again FGT why are you so heartless, these are human beings but for the grace of ā€œgodā€ it could be us.

So you'd give a house to asylum seekers in preference to a family with children who have been the victims of no-fault eviction and are living in a hotel room with no cooking facilities?

I'd suggest some posters are ignoring that huge problem which gets worse week by week.

Good post. There are so many people out there who absolutely deserve a little home of their own or who are in accommodation that does not meet their needs.

I knew a lady in her 80s who lived in private rented accommodation. She had a daughter with Down’s syndrome who was in her 50s and hugely obese. The house was a death trap because it was an old cottage with the steepest, narrowest stairs ever and they could no longer climb them. They ended up sleeping downstairs in armchairs and anybody who visited would be asked to bring things down from upstairs so they lived surrounded by boxes of clothes, toiletries etc.

I talked to the local council on their behalf and wrote countless letters to them and our MP but it took 3 years for them to get a council bungalow.

Thank you Allira you are a poster who is measured and sensible so your posts are MUCH appreciated!

I’m sure that it’s been mentioned before that we are a small island and cannot accommodate more people, especially in the towns and cities. This is the crux of the matter as many posters have already pointed out.Where are they all to go?

Allira Sat 26-Apr-25 15:26:51

recitals flipping autocorect - rentals.

Allira Sat 26-Apr-25 15:25:52

Smileless2012

FGT's I don't know what the answer to the migration problem is but don't see how this can be one. There's already a shortage of rental accommodation, due in part to landlords 'getting out' before new rules and regulations become law.

Whst about families with children already living in one or two rooms because their landlords have turned them out through no fault of their own?

Surely people on a waiting list for housing should have priority? People living in rotten, mould-infested recitals need decent accommodation.

There must be other accommodation which is suitable for single men?

*Whitewavemark2^ Sat 26-Apr-25 09:32:10
Here comes the we hate migrants thread again

No, Whitewave, people already waiting months for accommodation, trying to exist in a hotel room with children and just a kettle, should be the priority.

Primrose53 Sat 26-Apr-25 15:19:45

Whitewavemark2

Here comes the we hate migrants thread again. Hasn’t been talked/hated about for at least 10secs.

Calm yourself down whitewavemark2!

Nobody on here has ever said they hate migrants, illegal or otherwise but the sheer numbers arriving on our shores now is completely unacceptable when we have people who have worked and paid their taxes and are unable to get social housing because of too many people waiting or private rentals because they are too expensive.

You always jump on anything anti migrant and claim it’s racist but it isn’t. There have been many occasions when I’ve seen people in the street being interviewed about the migrant crisis and they are every creed, colour and religion yet they say we should not allow any more people in. They are NOT just white British.

Labour are doing absolutely nothing to stop them coming and if they are being provided with nice free, rented accommodation even more will come.

How many migrants are you putting up wwm2? Whenever these posts are on, their supporters always sayā€ well, I would but I just don’t have the room.ā€ 🤣🤣

The only reports of this I can find are in the Telegraph, Daily Mail and GB News hmm

There’s a report in today’s Times.
However the main point at issue is the dire shortage of reasonable, affordable housing for those already here - natives and migrants.
Successive governments have done sod all to address it, and I don’t see that changing any time soon.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 26-Apr-25 14:40:05

Maybe Trump is sorting out his own Rwandan package. It’s going to be beautiful.

Wyllow3 Sat 26-Apr-25 14:20:07

And anyway as GB news pointed out...

"Rwandan homes earmarked for deported migrants already sold...

GB News

4 Sept 2024 — Rwandan homes that were previously earmarked to house migrants deported from the UK have already been sold to local buyers.

Wyllow3 Sat 26-Apr-25 14:17:08

Yes, eyeing up alongside a number of other countries reported in all the usual suspect press outlets with little real information. Trump coughs an x out and we all jump - I'd wait to see what it's supposed to involve first.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 26-Apr-25 14:05:30

In one JE and Freya.

I read that Trump is eyeing up the Rwanda package that we’d paid for and weren’t allowed to use.
