Just that - Albo has won with a massive majority for his second term as PM. The leader of the opposition has lost his seat. He is a decent man and made a really gracious speech in defeat.

Interesting that on BBC News, as in Canada, one of the reasons given by Australian voters is the Trump effect.

Wyllow3 Sat 03-May-25 13:27:11

Yes Casdon - I couldn't find a news report on googling that doesn't allude to the Trump factor, whether its international trade/tariffs/international markets or domestic policy (working from home for example).

nanna may be able to say if this is a reasonable description of events (since most of it is new to me except the bare bones)

I think the opposition leader would have been very hard to accept. He just didn’t ‘feel’ right and he seemed obsessed with nuclear energy. Trump didn’t really get mentioned much by either party. Not many support him here from any party, right or left or in between. We haven’t got a Nigel here as yet. Give it time …

Would Australia like our Nigel nanna8?
I'd be happy to pay towards his ticket.

nanna8 Sat 03-May-25 14:21:14

In a word, no. I don’t think he would fit in here. You are welcome to keep him.To be fair, probably the issues are different,I don’t know.

Loved seeing the Aussie hunks strolling into the polling station in their budgie smugglers! 😉. The female reporter also enjoyed it.

Churchview Sat 03-May-25 16:27:42

Oh well nanna8, you can't blame me for trying. grin

I always thought Albanese came across as a bit of a drip but I must have under-estimated him.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 03-May-25 17:29:41

Well that is two surprise Liberal Dems been voted in over the past week or so.

Canada and Australia.

Trump has his uses😄

Allira Sat 03-May-25 23:27:54

Albanese is Labour.

The Liberals in Australia are more conservative, rather like the UK Tory Party.

Bigred18 Sun 04-May-25 06:38:45

It's awful, another 3 years of Albanese and his lies sad

My DD agrees with that, she can’t stand the man.

karmalady Sun 04-May-25 07:13:54

Aus has compulsory voting and my sister say that gen z has swung the vote

Calendargirl Sun 04-May-25 07:17:17

They can also vote early, not sure if that is just postal or actual booth voting.

DD said over a million had already cast their votes days before the election.

Yes I know, I am using the term liberal democracy to describe the sort of government these politicians represent.

So you can be a Liberal -liberal democracy or a Conservative liberal democracy or a Labour liberal democracy.

As apposed to the sort of authoritarian government people like Trump, Putin and Xi and their supporters represent. .

That’s a really good thing though I think, because at least that way the government is truly elected by all the people. It would stop all the debate we have in the UK about low turnout affecting the end result.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 04-May-25 07:50:29

Gen z are looking to their future.

foxie48 Sun 04-May-25 08:05:59

I heard Albanese being interviewed on Leading, he sounded quite sensible to me and I applaud his government's decision to control under 16's access to social media. Dutton had been described as "Trump light" populist type. Trump's tariffs were a big factor in changing people's minds and Alba was very focused on the Gen Z voter. I wish we had compulsory voting, at least we would be confident that our politicians were truly representative of all rather than those who were motivated to vote out of anger.

😃

Thank you for the clarification of your post.
Both parties are fairly central and there are always a number of Independents who stand too, as well as many small parties.

This was from 2022!

Just nitpicking but it is Labor not Labour here. No idea why they adopt American spelling for this but they do.
I am glad Labor won but I think it is a shame the opposition has been weakened so much. Our local member, a Liberal, lost his seat after many years. He was one of the good blokes, sadly, worked extremely hard and was very generous to local charities. Pleased to say the ridiculous Trumpet of Patriots party, based on Trump policies, won no seats. Ha.

Oreo Sun 04-May-25 10:16:51

Labor in nanna8 so you got your wish😃
Let’s hope Albanese does a good job, it’s his second time in Office isn’t it?

Yes, apologies, I do know but autocorrect knew better!
