To be a bit more charitable, these 2 men seem to be what we describe as 'bears of very little brain', living on the edges of society and lacking the capacity to think deeply about the consequent results of any of their actions.

They have themselves expressed bafflement about the way people reacted to cutting the tree down, and they probably think that their frequenting a known homophobic meeting spot to 'jump' people and throw a harmless substance (icing sugar) over them, is also a good joke that harms no one.

The best and most practical punishment would be community service with a purpose, planting and nurturing nature and a good course on critical thinking that makes themunderstand that actions have consequences, not the least on themselves

The news of the homophobic attacks has hardened my feelings about these two. Absolutely vile. so it is attacks against people swell asa spiteful destruction of a loved tree.

I would neither flog nor hang, but a day in the stocks might act as a deterrent for others thinking of being this stupid.

I would not want anyone throwing anything at them and I would want them well protected from the public with suitable meal breaks. But people like this need to be made to realisejust how unfunny stunts like this are, and what people think of the perpetrators.

I've just read that report on the BBC website. What a peculiar and disgusting pair. I expect the icing sugar is some kind of allusion to homosexuality, being 'fairies' or something, just horrible.
What else have they done or were they planning? You have to wonder.

The argument there is that wind farms produce electricity that is not removing CO2 from the atmosphere as oil and gas and coal burning currently is.

You'd have to know much more than me about the relative benefits/losses.

I doubt the SNP can plant 1,700 trees a day for the next 20 years.

The people building the wind farms are supposed to be doing the offsetting, not the Scottish National Party.

Whoever is supposed to be replacing 16 million trees it will take about 20 or more years after which they will take years to grow to maturity and become effective at removing CO2 from the atmosphere. Meanwhile the CO2 continues to build.

It was not just the tree, it damaged Hadrians wall, a Unesco heritage site. Hope sentence reflects that. If they spraypainted or chopped Stonehenge or Westminster Abbey, would be outrage. Vandals need to be worried about the consequences.

I certainly wouldn’t have wanted to have been their defence barrister! I also wonder who told them that someone would believe the ridiculous lies they told. Like many grans I would also just like to know why they would do such a terrible destructive thing. I guess we will probably never know. Like most I was so upset at the demise of such an iconic tree, although of course there are worse violent crimes against humans.

I hear say they might have up to 10 years in prison. Rapists, wifebeaters and fraudsters didn't get that much.
