It’s not being given out yet what happened except a car ploughed into pedestrians this evening.Accident or deliberate ?
The police will soon say.

Doodledog I read your comment as a reference to communal celebrations - weddings, birthdays, Christmas, commemorating the end of a war, winning the Championship etc. Naturally, people are happy when they get together to celebrate and so a tragedy like this seems more devastating.

That was my interpretation. However, I can see that it could be read differently. Your reference to "culture" could be interpreted as somebody (an outsider) wanting to attack it. Unfortunately, references to culture are bubbling underneath many racist posts, so maybe that's what people thought. Maybe I'm wrong - somebody who has attacked you will hopefully explain.

I see. Thanks for explaining.

Yes, I meant things like communal celebrations of things important to groups of people (such as football). I wasn’t speculating about race or nationality - I specifically said ‘celebrating their/our culture’, as it seems doubly awful that people having a good time have been targeted, whether the perpetrator is a Liverpool supporter or not. His colour or nationality are irrelevant to that, IMO - it is those reading that into my post who made the assumption that those things matter.

Actually, I would like to make a point here. Many Gransnetters know both of us and will be very aware that I will not have been making a racist point or ‘speculating’ about another culture.

Doodledog I absolutely understand that you would never make a racist point - it’s the furthest thing from your nature.

Macadia, the police are in a dilemma, aren't they?
After the Southport killings the police press office were criticised for refusing to offer any details about the suspect, allowing SM to fill the gap with speculation.
I expect that the information released today is to counter that.

karmalady Tue 27-May-25 07:14:34

Footage being shared instantly is a fact of life now, sharing information to family and friends, not voyeurism at all. Anyone from Liverpool, wherever they live now, is part of the Liverpool family and footage does not need the many words needed to try and describe the situation

Speculation comes from others, even on this thread

Allsorts Tue 27-May-25 07:08:03

Do idle, sure no one thinks you are racist. Some people read some thing into everything. We shouldn't have to pick every word in case it's taken out of content.
Marcadia, don't understand what you are trying to say, everything matters, we know nothing but can surely all agree everyone is shocked and feel for those concerned. No one is casting blame as we don't know.

Why was that car allowed to go along that desperately busy road?
It almost looked as it he was annoyed they were blocking his way and he lost his temper.
You are right terrible incident.

Me too. BBC News last night featured the Liverpool incident, Russia/Ukraine and Israel/Gaza, one atrocity following another. Carnage and cruelty in abundance. Why such hatred for fellow human beings? Can't they channel their energies into something good and positive?

Police have arrested a 53 year old white British man.

Does the pigment of his skin color or hair color age height body weight matter? Can we just agree that the person was of the male human type? There is a trend.

Sorry - I was upset and pressed ‘send’ too soon.

I would like to think that nobody would assume that I was making a racist point or that you (Rosieandhernaw) had any reason to think that I would do so.

I would never think that of you. It is terribly upsetting, isn’t it sad

Doodledog Tue 27-May-25 00:20:40

Oops. I obviously didn’t press ‘send’ too soon😂

Stil, the question remains. Why assay I was being racist?

^I know, which is why I was at pains to say ‘their/our’ culture- we don’t yet know the motive behind it^

Then why speculate, implying possibly another culture?

I was intending to do the exact opposite. Sorry if I got it wrong, or if you misunderstood.

It was a Liverpudlian apparently Doodlebug so nothing to do with targeting ‘our’culture
A very, very sad situation

A tradegy for people of Liverpool and you wonder what has happened to our World. Heart goes out to everyone involved.

Doodledog Mon 26-May-25 21:21:12

Horrible.

My son is a huge football fan, and if his team (not Liverpool) had won he would absolutely have been there, in high spirits and delighted to cheer them on. For people to lose their lives or suffer serious injury at such times is just awful.

Obviously we don't know anything about this yet, but as with the Manchester Arena bombing and other similar ones, targeting people who are celebrating their/our culture is the worst sort of terrorism (if that turns out to be what this is). I hope 'they' don't win and prevent people from continuing to enjoy the things that make them happy.

Another eye witness who narrowly avoided being hit said the horn was being sounded in the vehicle in question.
Which is strange.

Just read a report from a local radio reporter in a building with a vantage point.
Says 2 ambulances have been there and not moved. Over 2 hours. Also an incident tent.
So it's not looking good unfortunately.
