Incident in Water St Liverpool

Did he have a heart attack or something ? That sort of thing happens from time to time . I remember someone driving through a garden and into a house once because they had an attack and their foot was down on the accelerator. People panic and it can lead to all sorts of nasty things when cars are involved.

Aside from the tragic incident that occurred, I couldn’t help but notice from the footage of the aftermath just how much rubbish was thrown onto the streets.

Do the streets look like this after every similar event?

Of course it's catastrophic - and I sincerely hope that the people still in hospital recover well. When it was first announced, I just couldn't bring myself to look at the videos because I thought a number of people would surely have been killed.

Apart from the voyeuristic aspect, I volunteered to look at some videos of somebody being killed a couple of years ago. My partner's nephew was killed by a speeding dangerous driver. There was video footage, which were posted on social media. The videos were used in the court case, but the immediate family were too distraught to watch them. Nevertheless, they needed to know what had happened because it was crucial evidence. I volunteered to watch because the lad who was killed wasn't that close to me and I then described what I'd seen. Seeing his body thrown up in the air and falling on the road is something I'll never forget and I didn't want to watch anything like it again.

With the current case, there were reports that those in hospital were stable (and I sincerely hope they get better). I came across some disgusting threads on Twitter and I wanted to make up my own mind, so I decided I would watch what was available on the BBC. I am now able to form my own opinions based on primary evidence rather than all the misinformed nonsense which is doing the rounds.

I would not have been able to watch video of anybody being killed, which IMO really would have been catastrophic.

The issues involved with social media in the case have been - err - interesting. I can't help feeling that the discourse would have been very different if the suspect had turned out to be foreign and/or have brown skin. As it is, there have been hundreds of posts claiming that the police are covering up and that it really was a terrorist attack. When that didn't wash, they turned on the Liverpool fans, but that doesn't wash either, if you watch the videos in sequence and in context. Now it's been announced that a middle-aged father, who's a "nice" family man with a business was the driver, social media seems to have gone very quiet. I wonder why! Could it be that people didn't care about the victims after all, but just wanted to stir up divisions? Hmm ... I see a pattern here!

So, having spent more time than I intended explaining what I meant, maybe you'd like to wind your neck in.

I can understand why you see posts from people with those kind of attitudes MayBee. You explained it yourself. Occasionally, people start kicking off on one of my local Facebook Groups, but the mods are quite strict and conscientious, so they stamp on them before they go over the top. I think it's quite common when people start being nostalgic for the "good old days".

Twitter is something else! As Doodledog pointed out, it's not healthy to spend 100% of your time in an echo chamber, so I do occasionally follow Twitter threads - before my blood pressure goes up too much! I even read GB News and the Dail Mail (before it went behind a paywall) - I'm not going to pay to be outraged! It's not so much the opinions which outrage me but the unsourced "news", the pathetic name-calling and bullying and manipulation using journalistic tricks.

When I found out that the Liverpool incident wasn't so catastrophic as originally feared, I've been following it and the conspiracy theories. It's been interesting to see how Merseyside Police have tried to manage the situation. It's now been announced that the suspect is a ‘married businessman and father-of-three’ (according to the Indie), that he's a "nice family man" and it's "completely out of character". I wonder how that will affect public opinion and any subsequent sentencing. I hope the public doesn't turn on the Liverpool fans now - somebody already started on this thread. Liverpool fans don't take too kindly to having their reputation unfairly tarnished.

They aren’t messages. They are racist comments on pages that I am following and sometimes commenting on.

If you choose to take it that way, so be it. It wasn’t intended and I really am puzzled why you get messages like that on Facebook. I don’t and never have . I must be lucky.

All I see on Facebook are messages from overseas friends and acquaintances ,recipes and pictures of beautiful places.Sometimes interesting historical pictures of places I used to know. I have never,ever seen anything racist or nasty. Maybe people should be more careful which groups they affiliate with ?

The groups I am referring to are just local nostalgia pages.There shouldn’t be a problem affiliating with pages like that, pages that discuss what those areas were like in our childhood. The area where I grew up was slum clearance so it has all gone. So I like being able to discuss streets and shops etc that no longer exist. But then invariably someone will start saying how much better it was back then, how everyone looked out for each other and how much better it was before it was full of foreigners. I’m quite insulted at the way you have implied that I meet with racist comments on Facebook because of the sites that I frequent.

To be fair, I don't receive racist/extreme posts on Facebook, but that could be because I hardly use it and the algorithms don't have anything to pick up. I don't have WhatsApp, so I use Facebook Messenger to "phone" a few friends and share photos and I "own" a Facebook Group, which is a closed group and I monitor it quite closely. There are just over 2000 members and I've only ever had to ban three people. I belong to about half a dozen other closed groups - mainly local news/selling groups.

It worries that all sorts of stuff could be going on in the "closed" groups (not mine). It's so easy to set one up. As far as I know, they're not monitored apart from by the owners, who could be anyone.

X (Twitter) has become a bear pit since Musk bought it. I used to use it to follow a few people and organisations I respect, but it seems impossible now to block unwanted posts.

I can’t seem to be ale to share any anti Trump posts on Facebook either, which I find suspicious. Even wonder if that’s got anything to do with me being locked out of my iPad Facebook account, too.

Dickens I really find the whole "environment" (for want of a better word) quite scary. As an undergraduate, I studied some original diaries and newspaper articles from 1930s Germany and similar themes repeat themselves. The environment becomes normalised and more people get dragged into it. It doesn't take much for a few people to exploit it.

I fear that's true - judging by some of the posts on social media, particularly Facebook where, once, overtly racist posts would be censored, they are now common currency.

Third party fact checkers have been abandoned on FB, apparently they were too 'politically biased'.

It just goes to show how video clips like this, with no continuity or context, can be interpreted differently. I didn't "see" what you did eazybee. I interpreted what I've seen the same as Casdon. Everything I've seen suggests the driver was driving without consideration for the pedestrians. Just before the main incident, he actually swerved from the road, which was relatively clear and headed into a packed area of pavement. I'm not surprised people in the crowd were angry - that driver had driven too fast and carelessly and people were injured (thank goodness nobody seems to have died).

PS. Did The Sun resurrect some Hillsborough journalists to write some of the nonsense which has been circulating?

It doesn’t appear from this to have been initiated by the crowd, rather he narrowly missed hitting a female pedestrian. The telling thing I think was the estimated speed he was travelling at, which is mentioned.

Watching the video clips, my first thought on seeing those men chasing the car was: they are spoiling for a fight; dancing on the balls of their feet, hands curled into fists, Then someone drop kicked the rear of the car; an object was thrown, and later when the car had stopped they tried to get in the car, and also the police van when the driver was arrested. No excuse for the driver, but those men were intent on harm.
Last year, driving home in a rainstorm on a partially flooded road I joined the wrong lane at a junction and had to wait for a change of light to join the right hand lane. The car behind was annoyed, hit the horn loudly, then the passenger left the car, walked up to the back of my car and thumped it twice with his fists. Fortunately the lights changed, someone let me in and I got away as quickly as possible. After the shock it was the pent up violence that was so frightening.

They have just released some footage of the car before he reached the point where people were throwing things at the car. He narrowly misses another pedestrian, but there were people all over the road at this point as well.

The cars are moving very slowly and most pedestrians are on the pavement. Some are crossing the road, as people often do when the traffic is at a standstill.

There is far more drug driving than we ever realise.
Someone was badly injured near here on a pedestrian crossing in the early morning by someone who had been taking drugs at breakfast-time.

There really is! I read recently that there are more drug driving offences than drunk driving offences.😲
