It’s not being given out yet what happened except a car ploughed into pedestrians this evening.Accident or deliberate ?
The police will soon say.

I hope the Government take this opportunity to make driving under the influence of drink and drugs, zero tolerance. The sentences need to be increased too. At the moment death caused by dangerous driving carries a maximum of 14 years which is nowhere near long enough. A vehicle is a very dangerous weapon in the wrong hands.
It seems a miracle to me that nobody was killed but those dreadful memories will live long in those poor peoples memories.

The maximum sentence for causing death by dangerous driving was increased to up to life imprisonment for offences caused after June 28 2022

This man is under arrest for attempted murder anyway, if he is found guilty then dangerous driving would surely be a lesser charge?

Wyllow3 Tue 27-May-25 18:26:51

Thank goodness indeed no one was killed.
The police have been great not just their response at the time but a model in when and how to release information. Speed and the right info what people want to know.

And this is how irresponsibly false information and rumour spread on social media

I imagine most of us prefer to hear or read the facts of this distressing event.
From the BBC website a few minutes ago
A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a car was driven into a crowd in Liverpool on Monday, police say
The 53-year-old, from West Derby, an area of the city, has also been arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs and dangerous driving offences

The BBC are reporting that a 53 year old man has been arrested for attempted murder, dangerous driving and driving while unfit from drugs

Thank you Cold.

Karmalady what was that you were saying…?

I will say no more!

Yes, and once they’ve run towards it they often have to do battle with some of the public as can be seen yesterday.

Yes, it must be extremely frustrating.

woodenspoon Tue 27-May-25 15:13:45

They deserve every penny they earn and more in my opinion.

Once again the police and emergency services run towards danger, not away from it.
Brave people.

Hear, hear👏👏👏

The caller to Jeremy Vine also complained there were no food stalls and portaloos. It wasn't a food festival for goodness sake. There are plenty of cafes and shops in Liverpool and I would guess adding stalls to the route would only add to congestion on pavements so another stupid comment IMO.

Wyllow3 Tue 27-May-25 14:43:51

(it matches what woodenspooon suggested as possible)

Can I recommend this video? A very responsible account showing events unfolding and confusion about how "deliberate" it was or not not offering an opinion not over dramatising not commenting/speculating on the driver.

It’s being said that barriers were moved to allow the ambulance in, this driver tailgated the ambulance and drove down the street, the crowd surged, some attacked the vehicle, others tried to drag the driver out, he accelerated to escape. Then, the inevitable happened. It’s a very sad day.

It does seem a credible scenario.

LizzieDrip Tue 27-May-25 14:29:05

We need no more of this (Nudge, nudge, wink, wink) “I will say no more”

Absolutely 👏👏👏

Actually rather cross with Jeremy Vine just nnow talking to a caller who said there was absolutely no police presence. With a million people in the city and aerial footage showing police vans and officers all over its unrealistic to expect every road to be lined with officers. Fact is the police were on the scene immediately trying to stop the vehicle, detain the diver, try to extract people from under it and calm the crowd. That car could have been carrying a bomb or the driver aŕmed.but in they went with no thoughts for their own safety. Many of the same officers hurt in the Southport riots only months ago.I know this because our close relative is one of them.It would just have been nice to hear JV acknowledge that there was a big police presence on Water Street. And that they responded immediately. As you can tell this is close to home.Thinking of all those injured and their families.

I don’t listen to Jeremy Vine but, obviously, that caller has made themselves sound stupid, and JV has shown what a spineless ‘journalist’ (I use that term loosely) he is, for his lack of challenge.

^Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision and it is vital that people do not speculate or spread misinformation on social media.^

woodenspoon Tue 27-May-25 14:19:27

Looking at that link on bbc verify it appears that the car was moving down the street and it was attacked by a thug from the rear. It also looks like there was another car in front. Was that some sort of medical car? After that, all hell let loose.

So what do you know that the police, the emergency services and those nearby don’t?

The same information as the 100s of stirrers on X know! I was unfortunate enough to stumble on a thread making exactly this claim.

LizzieDrip Tue 27-May-25 14:16:02

Rosieandhermaw I presume what she ‘knows’ are the ridiculous conspiracy theories that are apparently circling on SM (of course) - just commented on (negatively) by Shelaigh Foggerty on LBC.

Remember the Southport attacker Karmalady?
