What do you think happened to make her slap her husband as they got off the plane?
My opinion: he told the crew to open the door before she had put her wig on !
She had probably taken it off to sleep it is a long flight to Hanoi and had woken up grumpy ?🙄 and lost her cool at being rushed.
He did not look happy at all clenched fist as they walked away from the plane.

Abuse is abuse, whether it is violence or coercion, whether it is male on male, male on female, female on male or female on female. Whether, rich, poor famous or infamous.

It should never be tolerated, there should not be any excuses.

The more it is brought out in the open, the more chance of the abused being able to speak about it and escape.

ronib Thu 29-May-25 18:09:01

Given that the general public has no information about why and what was actually happening, I can’t understand how everyone is such an expert….. exactly who is being abused?

Jennerdysphoria Thu 29-May-25 19:16:17

It's not clear what happened. Macron himself said they were having a joke. Anyway, their age-gap story is interesting. There is no evidence of misconduct when he was a minor. Brigitte herself has said that she recognised and admired his intellect, but expected (over a decade) that he would find someone his own age (which, as she said, did not happen). My guess is that he responded to her admiration and support, and continued to derive benefit from it, perhaps even need it.(Apparently he pursued her, it was not the other way round).

Oh but surely that’s the motto of Social Media-

Everyone’s An Expert? hmmhmm

It's not clear, but at the same time Macron himself said about it to journalists, nous sommes en train de nous chamailler. That means, he said they were "having a squabble". Then added, joking around.

I'm not an expert, but I heard what he said in Hanoi. He looked exasperated. 😠

Mt61 Thu 29-May-25 23:44:40

Hardly. Body language suggests otherwise. He’s probably gone back to tell her to calm down and tell her that the door was wide opened when she pushed him.

Feel more sorry for the staff, who had to witness the incident.

Poor Brigitte, how awful to have your life publicly disected the world over!
It's hard enough being a woman without being under that level of scrutiny! 🤨

Ilovedogs22 She’s not helping herself , by hitting her husband. Of course could be the start of dementia.

And, this kind of behaviour in front of staff does suggest it’s not isolated

Baggs Fri 30-May-25 09:20:04

That’s because it’s still accepted that older men have younger wives/girlfriends, whereas a woman with a chap 20 or so years younger than herself still looks like she’s out with her son.

And there are good biological reasons for this attitude if one thinks about it for a few seconds. All life is about spreading one's genes to the following generations. The 'reproductive window' for females is much shorter than for males. Obviously males sometimes/often take advantage of this. As would women if the situation were reversed.

Brigitte M was near the end of her reproductive years when she fell in love with Emmanuel so I guess he really did fall in love with her. I think the stress of having to keep looking as young as possible at her age must be quite severe.

Casdon Fri 30-May-25 09:26:30

A good point Baggs, although I don’t think that these days most older men seeking younger women are doing so with procreation in mind, they are stoking their egos.

Baggs Fri 30-May-25 09:28:07

Well, with procreation in mind or not, Boris seems to be achieving that and treatment for his ego 😅

Casdon Fri 30-May-25 09:35:21

I was thinking of the revolting Kanye West/Bianca Censori scenario, but there are plenty of examples out there. I think men who have a family already and leave them for a younger model aren’t usually interested in having more children, although some of them do give in to the demands from the new partner, and often then move on again to a yet younger one. A woman who behaves in a similar way is quite a rare phenomenon I think.

Mt61 Fri 30-May-25 10:29:09

As smart as she is, she just looks old compared to him.

Anniebach Fri 30-May-25 11:03:24

Joan Collins is married to a man 32 years younger than herself

Interesting point * Baggs*.

Sorry to sound like a bit of a boffin here, (it's a passion of mine, and 19th century French literature was my specialist subject at university!).
Le rouge et le noir by Stendahl has a protagonist, Sorel, who falls in love with the much older wife of the mayor when he tutors their children. When the relationship is discovered, he departs for Paris, with the words that he will return to her at a later date.

Why am I mentioning this? Who cares? But going through my thoughts .....

1. We know that Brigitte and Macron studied 19th century together after school. They read Stendahl's works together.
2. We know that the words used by Macron when he said he would return to marry her are the exact same words used by Sorel in the book.
3. We know Macron loves that psychological novel because it is lying on the table in his official portrait.

The parallels are to obvious to ignore. I recommend a read, in English, though it's a bit wordy and tedious in the middle.

And here endeth my lesson in French literature for today.

Grantanow Fri 30-May-25 11:45:34

That's an interesting view escaped : my question would be whether he was influenced in his choice by the novel or justifies his ninfluenced choice by displaying it in the photo.

Grantanow Fri 30-May-25 11:46:22

uninfluenced, I meant.

ViceVersa Fri 30-May-25 11:51:22

Speaking only for myself here, but it's not so much the age difference itself, but the fact that she was his teacher at the time which I find disconcerting. I didn't realise that her own daughter was in the same class either. I'd find that a bit odd, no matter who you were talking about - or whether it was a male teacher and a female pupil. Being attracted to someone who is the same age as one of your own children just seems a bit 'off' to me, to say the least.

Mt61 Fri 30-May-25 12:17:19

If they are happy, that is all that matters. It’s not for everyone marrying someone a lot younger, or older.
My mum was only 15, when she met my dad, 4 yrs older, they married when mum turned 18. They had a long happy 60 yrs together.

Galaxy Fri 30-May-25 12:17:26

Well certainly in this country it wouldn't just be seen as odd it would result in losing your job as a teacher. As I said in my area a male teacher was discovered with a pupil over 16 and was barred from the profession for life.

Yes, exactly. That's what doesn't sit very easily with me at all.

Mt61 Fri 30-May-25 12:29:54

So was Babara Windsor, Anniebach. I think they had a very happy marriage.
I can’t imagine Joan & Babs cracking their husbands 😔

BlueBelle Fri 30-May-25 12:37:32

I totally agree abuse is abuse whoever it’s coming from however that didn’t signal abuse to me it signalled ‘ oh for heavens sake you ve told me to get a move on three times now I m hurrying as fast as I can’
It was not a punch, it was not a slap it was a shove which maybe she didn’t even mean to connect to his face maybe aimed for his shoulder who knows just a shame it was on camera.
She looks a frail old thing to me (for 73) very thin and not a happy contented looking soul Perhaps she’s just too old for all this gadding about the world and should be at home reading her classics with her feet up

Labradora Fri 30-May-25 14:35:36

Re whether she's contented or not of course we only see her public face.
She's very, very petite and if you see pictures of her when she was young she was very lovely and one can see why E Macron fell for her. Highly intelligent as well didn't hurt.
I don't know the reason for the public denigration she's received but it's been horrible stuff. Think I'm right in saying that she finally sued someone when they insisted she'd been born male.
She's constantly scrutinised for "how old she looks" because of the age gap.
No-one criticises Emmanuel's appearance -he's relatively young and handsome of course, but he has been abused for daring to be devoted to an older woman by being labelled as gay. Who but a gay man looking for a "beard" would want an old woman.
All ghastly . If she looks a little depressed , little wonder.
Interesting post "escaped"!
Nice to live and learn😊😊😊
